Shock court ruling on Trump tariffs

This is mind blowing stuff.

A US federal court blocks President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, in a major blow to his economic policies

Three judges rule that Trump overstepped his authority when he used an emergency law to impose tariffs on nearly every country.

BBC verify an hour ago.

"US government raked in billions after Trump tariffs
The US has collected more than $40 billion in border duties since tariffs took effect, according to the Department of the Treasury - a record amount.

If the White House's appeal against the ruling blocking many tariffs is not successful, a big chunk of that will need to be refunded.

As the chart below shows, April and May saw the level of duties collected hit at least more than double the average since 2020.

Duties on cars, aluminium and steel are not impacted by the ruling, but the sweeping so-called reciprocal tariffs unveiled by Trump - 10% across the board for most countries and 30% for China - have been rendered legally void.
If higher courts do uphold Wednesday’s ruling after the White House appeals, that could be a hefty bill for the US government.

Whats more - just look at this report from the timeline

*
The chart below shows how US investors have reacted positively so far to the court ruling on Trump’s tariffs*
Futures are agreements to buy or sell stocks at a set price in the future, so these movements provide an indication of what could happen when US markets open later today.

The Nasdaq-100, S&P 500 and the Dow Jones all rose after the announcement.

Trumps reaction

But moments after the ruling, the Trump administration said it is appealing because it is "not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency" - and some tariffs levied under other laws are not impacted by the decision

The US is currently negotiating individual trade deals with dozens of countries - those talks have now been thrown into chaos.

It's shocking how he has turned the world against him and USA. Of course, not every country, but he's managed to unite Europe (mostly) and Canada has an enhanced reputation because of him. And all within six months. I can't think of many who take him seriously. He's made the role of the President a laughing stock throughout the world.

Wyllow3 Sat 31-May-25 16:03:24

It appears that way but every day brings also brings news of the different groundswells against him. Wondering what and when means it will reach a critical mass. Not to get rid of him but voting in the mid terms? and we don't know how far the democrats are in finding the right leader (s).

Maremia Sat 31-May-25 12:53:17

Unfortunately, he is getting away with most of it.

Magenta8 Sat 31-May-25 12:30:13

I think the basis of this is that Trump does not understand the American Constitution and the role of the POTUS. He sees himself as an absolute monarch.

Wyllow3 Sat 31-May-25 12:14:20

Trump, aware of the bad publicity on tariffs, is courting his core support groups with a new announcement.

President Donald Trump has announced the US will double its current tariff rate on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%, starting on Wednesday.

The projected resulting effect of jobs for US workers in improved eves of production relies on a partnership with Japans Nippon steel.

Trump promised a group of enthusiastic steel workers they would “Get bonuses of $5.000."

Trump's roughly hour-long, wide-ranging rally speech hinted at the deal he said he had made with Japan's Nippon Steel but he did not offer any new details.

But both companies have not confirmed any deal was completed

There are also issues of whether the US or Japan would "own" the new set up which matters because of widely differing terms and conditions of employment.

One could point out a wiser man might have waited before making promises?

Wyllow3 Fri 30-May-25 22:06:16

😂 if it wasn't all so ghastly.

Several small companies are now suing the Trump administration over tariffs and its one of the reasons Trump has got the "appeal" over the tariff ban.

“CNN’s Erin Burnett talks with David Levi, the founder of toy company MicroKits and one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit suing the Trump administration over its tariffs”

Its really well explained in this CNN video

Something I have ben wanting to ask US posters - all my reading points to wealthy US citizens employing cheap nanny's, maids, housekeepers, gardeners, carers, farm labour - all migrants whats happened to them? Have they used influence to get green cards to keep these workers?

Trump himself in his first term -

"How two housekeepers took on Trump and revealed a network of undocumented immigrants in his company

Wyllow3 Fri 30-May-25 18:54:45

Welcome US posters which shows a lot of us in UK are not far off in our judgements. No I haven't seen it Littlebea02 but it sounds very sexist!
I think some of us follow as we don't want it to happen here so watch for the warning signs and the relationship with the judiciary is a key one. I just happened to be watching an NCIS episode made in 2023, its very hung ho military but what stuck out was the sympathy to some undocumented people/migrants as in worthy characters appearing and the attitude, "dont worry, we've come to you for information to help a case not to turn you in - I'm just waiting until these start getting challenged under the bans!

Trump doesn’t listen to anybody! He is a monster. He is destroying my country in order to make as much money for himself as he can.

NanaMaryNH Fri 30-May-25 17:24:15

As a politically moderate American, I'd like to thank the many posters here for expressing the views of so many Americans. Nothing less than fear. It must resonate with Europeans as much because Trump/Vance and their minions are shamelessly emulating the Hitler playbook, thanks to our corrupt and cowardly Congress, some courts (esp soda can Clarence), our dept of (in)justice, etc. I've long had issues with the extremist Left, too. But they did not starve babies, kill current-and-in-the-future (meaning you?) patients by killing medical research, kidnap LEGAL immigrants off the street by stalking schools and stores and churches (reminiscent of the girl in red scene from Schindler's List), etc. And now- who knows if he/THEY will obey the Supreme Court. A court that granted him immunity. ...Please help us. Half our country is shrugging- or worse. We need you. Thank you.

Littlebea02 Fri 30-May-25 17:22:53

Wyllow it’s absolutely correct Donald Trump doesn’t care about judges because the highest court in the land is stacked by himself. Having said that the whole thing is getting pretty bad or has gotten ridiculous and remains that way. I have been wondering when someone would reign him in or at least attempt to. Did you all see the speech he made at West Point graduation where he went “off” and talked about Trophy Wives made me wonder if he forgot that he has what he referred to as a trophy wife- you just could not make these things up and currently my heart goes out to the family of the killers of George Floyd because they’re worried that Trump will pardon the cop that did this? Watch this space I guess!

Strange that every other President, from Reagan, has been allowed to set tariffs, with no restrictions.
These far-left loons in the corrupt judiciary will try anything to try and show that Trump's proven methods of negotiating MUST fail.
It's no different in the UK, except that there, the Commy PM directs the judiciary. Videos prove it.

You have to be a ‘Reform’ voter.. 🤮

I think Chazz01 may be in the USA.

I reckon what will happen is that it will go to the Supreme Court and as they have been put into place by Trump, will overturn the judgement.

This is likely, but Trump is doing his best to slam the Judges and the legal profession, called them all Scum on Memorial Day, and today ( Fri) called a major Conservative helper / friend ( Leonardo Leo) to those Far right Judges on the Supreme Court a ‘Sleazebag’ … so I am wondering if he has gone too far in skipping over so many Laws, etc, that they MAY uphold the law on this one when it reaches them? After all it’s their own fault they gave him “ immunity for illegal acts “ …so they are hopefully reaping what they sowed?
If they don’t take a stand soon, he will walk all over them and decide they are no longer needed!

Ronald Reagan 1987:

You see, at first, when someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works – but only for a short time. What eventually occurs is:

First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets.

And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs: high tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidise inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying.

Then the worst happens: markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.

Our PM is nowhere ear a “ commy” Chazz01.
Don’t know where you get that unusual idea from . Care to elaborate and back up your statement?

Or indeed any light thrown on what is "commy"....

Reds under the beds, I think.

Chazz01 no one has said there should never be tariffs - it how they have gone about it, surely?

I took forward to any valid video evidence of UK "commy" judiciary.

Look up the 3 pillars of democracy. The judiciary is there to make sure that the legislature and the executive (Trump) don't overstep their powers. IMHO the judiciary should not be elected ie political. The 3 are there t o to counterbalance each other so.you don't end up.with a dictator having all the power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely which seems to be the path Trump.is on.

Well on the campaign trail he promised all the MAGAs that he would be a dictator and they all clapped and cheered. So this is what they wanted. They are under the delusion that the money he "saves" will be given back to them when in fact, they will be a lot worse off.

Maremia Fri 30-May-25 14:54:25

And then there is the strange follow up to his golden gifted plane. Apparently it wasn't a gift at all, and he won't get it until he admits this? So much nonsense.

Wyllow3 Fri 30-May-25 14:41:27

Not on X. check it out, tariffs no mention, see what is (bigly self glorification our wonderful military, prices going down (?) , wonderful trip to Saudi, he alone persuaded India and Pakistan to peace, a nasty democratic dissed person in wheelchair....you get the gist.
