Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

So sad, listen to Woodie Guthrie sing "this land iis s my land, this land is your land, and look at wighat he's written on the guitar

Blimey!

"Did you know that Woody Guthrie hated Trump? "Old Man Trump" were song lyrics written in 1954 but never recorded by American folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie.

This is the story of Woody Guthrie and his fight against the racist housing practices of Guthrie’s landlord, Fred Trump, the father of President Donald Trump

No wonder Trump is like he is

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I feel like if you are raised by a racist millionaire, The chances of you turning into a racist millionaire is fairly high.

Another example - Elon Musk.

I wouldn't be in California for a pension right now. This will surely backfire on Trump, although he lies as easily as breathing.

I’ve never believed that old ‘the apple never falls far from the tree’ saying as that would mean every criminal and murderer and generally awful person, or drunk, drug taker or cruel person , then raised children that had to follow in their footsteps.
There can be inherited characteristics but as often as not the child when an adult becomes the opposite of the Father.

Oreo Wed 11-Jun-25 10:44:34

In Trump’s case he has inherited some of his Father’s characteristics and acts on them but seems to me that he was afraid of his Father and is a better Dad himself within his own family. His insecurity and thin skin which make him take bad decisions are likely to have come from his upbringing. I think that Boris Johnson is very similar.
Not that it makes either of them right to be in the top position in politics! Far from it.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 11-Jun-25 12:23:37

I think that you are spot on with this analysis, Oreo.
Mr Johnson and Mr Trump, both raised by larger - than - life ( that's the polite version) fathers seem to crave attention and will go to any length to acquire it.
As you say, this makes them a poor choice for any job requiring a steady hand.

I think you've made a really good point Oreo.

Both Trump and Johnson appear to have (had in the case of Trump) 'domineering' fathers.

Trump certainly has a thin skin when challenged or held to account, Johnson handles it better.

Things are ticking up. Abbott in Texas has sent the national guard to San Antonio and Trump is now talking about activating them all over the country and sending them into cities.

Meanwhile in DC, millions are being spent moving military equipment in and Trump is threatening protesters.

Yes I read that he is moving troops to 5 major cities.

Where on earth is the political opposition?

imaround Wed 11-Jun-25 17:26:20

There is none. Which is why, if we have another election, they all need to go. Most opposition is coming from the State level, and that is complicated. There is a hearing in Thursday about the CA deployment. Ordinary people are calling for state to activate their guards first, but that isn't a viable solution either.

i haven't seen the list of 5 cities, i am guessing it will be in cities like Seattle, Chicago and New York?

I marked up a map of what things could look like.

The red zone is a militarized zone on the border and where National Guard troops are currently stationed.

The blue zone are MAGA states, they will help him themselves.

The purple dots are where I suspect he would send more troops to, but I can't predict what the 5th city would be. Probably Portland, they are a special type of protestors in that city. Northern CA is fairly red, so no need to go there.

I am no military strategist, but it does appear that he is surrounding us.

imaround Wed 11-Jun-25 17:28:15

Also, an example of why there is no political opposition. Because they are making money off of him.

Maremia Wed 11-Jun-25 21:13:22

imaround, are both sides making money from him?

imaround Wed 11-Jun-25 21:53:03

Heck yea! 7 Democrats and 3 Republicans made money off his market manipulation it appears by financial recordings. Anyone rich who has insider knowledge of what he was going to do made a lot of money during his market manipulation weekend. There is a reason why people in Congress go in with much less money then they leave with.

Nearly all politicians are the same aren't they? Sure, there are a few who really care and want to serve the public. But that is hard to find these days in my experience in the US. Money and power are powerful drugs.

AOC is trying to stop stock trading my Congress members, but they have to vote themselves to disallow it. You can imagine how fast that will happen. hmm

imaround Wed 11-Jun-25 22:14:35

In case you want to follow along at home this weekend.

The first map from the BBC has info on where the protests are currently.

The second map is from the 50501 group webpage. Those are the known and registered protests planned for Saturday.

Here is their website if you want to dig deeper. www.nokings.org/?SQF_SOURCE=50501

Last I saw there are over 1,800 protests schedule for Saturday around the country. The Alt-National groups have said they have 90,000 member attending around the country.

The ALT groups are current and former, anonymous, federal employees who are reporting from the inside and are the reason why federal agencies are giving current employees loyalty tests and polygraphs. You can learn more about how the ALT groups got started during trumps first term here: www.nokings.org/?SQF_SOURCE=50501

I highly recommend following the ALT-National Park Service on social media if you haven't if you want to follow along with the downfall of democracy in the US.

I remember a few months ago when people were asking why we weren't rising up and I kept saying it wasn't time. We weren't ready because not enough fickle Trump voters had been harmed yet by his policies. (we will never convince true MAGA that Trump is a bad man).

It is time. Enough voters have been harmed, even in red areas. People are seeing the excessive use of force happening and are mad about a stupid North Korean style military parade.

I pray that nothing bad happens this weekend to be honest. Hopefully it just distracts from his ego parade and makes him mad that people aren't bowing at his feet. We will see, it could go either way.

Also, you are going to hear that over 200 people were arrested in LA last night. They were arrested for breaking curfew. The actual charge is failure to disperse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of $1,000.

So nothing really. But I am sure the media will play this up as a huge thing.

imaround Thu 12-Jun-25 05:42:46

I haven't seen the news yet tonight, but I did see this.

Reports from LA is that the protesters were peaceful and the federal agents escalated it the same way.

imaround Thu 12-Jun-25 06:31:18

Good article that lays out how Trump's team is illegally deporting people, and stalling when ordered to bring those wrongly deported people back.

Apparently a group of them are being held in a shopping container on a military base in Djibouti after a judge told them they can't send random people to South Sudan.

I saw a bunch were headed to Gitmo soon too.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 13-Jun-25 06:37:08

A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration's deployment of California's National Guard to Los Angeles and called the move illegal.

Trump has lodged an appeal.

imaround Fri 13-Jun-25 13:13:52

Appeals court overturned the block until Tuesday when there is a hearing.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 13-Jun-25 14:05:04

Listening to some commentary this morning by a couple of political bods.

The opinion was that

Immigrants provide millions of working hours on jobs that Americans don’t want to do - particularly in agriculture, labouring, hospitality etc.

These immigrants have in many cases been in the USA for years and have settled, paying tax and bringing up their families.

If they are expelled the USA will be short of millions of hours of work and billions in tax.

So much so, that crops will not be picked, building not built etc.

That is when Trump will be hit.

So the opinion is that the protests should stop, and to allow the situation to develop as above, which will they reckon happen pretty quickly.

They also reckoned that if Trump arrested the Californian Governor he (the Governor) will be the next president!

I’m not sure, although if I look at Brexit, I suppose if we had not allowed hundreds of thousands of immigrants in from Africa and Asia, the U.K. would be in the same position.

But you have to convince the xenophobes and that is difficult because they are so entrenched in their little world.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 13-Jun-25 14:43:43

WWM I understand that Mr Trump is rethinking some of these deportations following lobbying from farmers with crops to pick.
" We need to help hard working farmers" he declares, with no hint of irony.
This is a fine example of an arsonist visiting the scene of his latest fire with a bucket of water awaiting plaudits for his help.

PoliticsNerd Fri 13-Jun-25 14:47:11

Xenophobes have always existed but rage-baiting (which you can see even on Gransnet) and rage farming are a product of the internet and help spread and increase hatered.

That’s interesting. I hadn’t read that.

And of course the cost of the crops will escalate.

imaround Fri 13-Jun-25 21:28:32

There are entire crops of tomatoes in Florida being plowed over because there is no one to pick them.

Migrants pay in over $1B in taxes each year. If they are illegal, they get no benefits. No social security, no welfare, nothing. (I'll go find this data because I am sure someone will be a long soon to tell me how bad immigrants are and that it couldn't be true they pay in so much)

He has been rounding up LEGAL migrants. He is revoking their status based on country of origin. I wonder what the Xenophobes think about that? Because I always hear "you should do it the right way". And they did. And are being deported anyhow.

I am hearing his parade may be cancelled due to rain? This seems unlikely to me due to his ego, but who knows.

imaround Fri 13-Jun-25 21:31:02

That number is bigger than I thought.

$96 billion in 2024.

"Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022. Most of that amount, $59.4 billion, was paid to the federal government while the remaining $37.3 billion was paid to state and local governments."
