It looks like Trump now has his Stormtroopers (Stoßtruppen)

Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

Is everyone just playing into his hands?

Just saw a report that there are over 1,800 protests scheduled for Saturday. Trump reportedly just threatened protestors and said of they ruined his parade, there would be severe consequences.

If it is going to kick off, it will be on Saturday.

Please keep us posted with detail and videos if you can imaround I'm not able to do my usual amount of "looking up" as usual atm 👍

I never ever realised that the President of America wielded so much power.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 21:46:41

The terrifying thing to me is that since he took office a few short months ago, Trump has been ratcheting things up and up to where you are now and staring Martial Law in the face.

But my question is - when is he going to stop? Is Greenland now a possibility, or Canada.

When is he going to stop?

imaround Tue 10-Jun-25 21:21:13

Absolutely. Once he declared Martial Law, he will be in power until he dies.

And yes, he is a fascist. Checked those boxes 10 years ago when he was elected the first time. Even I didn't see it though and I never voted for him. I figured he would ruin stuff and leave.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 21:19:01

This is a list published by the US Holocaust museum. Imo Trump ticks most of the boxes.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF FASCISM

Powerful and continuing nationalism
Disdain for human rights
Identification of enemies as a unifying cause
Rampant sexism
Controlled mass media
Obsession with national security
Religion and government intertwined
Corporate power protected
Labor power suppressed
Disdain for intellectual and the arts
Obsession with crime and punishment
Rampant cronyism and corruption

If Trump calls an insurrection - I wonder if he will use that as an excuse to stop the mid-terms?

When I was in Madrid in November, I walked through a bigger protest.

Trump's team and Fox News is using words like invasion, insurrection, riot in order to justify breaking the law and sending the military to control the population.

Some of the people they arrested were driven straight to the border and told to cross. No court, no due process, nothing.

It might sound good to those who think immigration is bad, but eventually they will run out of people to hate and will be searching for a new group.

Once the government breaks the law, no one is safe.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 20:52:52

There are much bigger protests taking place in Europe than that over Gaza. Some of them are absolutely massive. But no troops😄😄 hardly any police tbh. They do arrest people but simply don’t make a song and dance about it.

imaround Tue 10-Jun-25 20:36:03

Yes there are laws against what he is doing. That hasn't stopped him.

Both Congress and the Courts can stop him. Some judges are trying, but they are just ignoring orders. Congress can stop his use of the Alien Enemy Act at any time, but wont. They can stop the tariffs, too. They can impeach him tomorrow and remove him. They wont. They are all mostly complicit in this Authoritarian takeover.

I don't think people not in the US fully understand what is happening here to be honest.

His weekend Los Angeles military fling is expected to cost $165 million by the way. On top of the $45 million he is spending in his big birthday parade.

But we cant afford to help people get food and healthcare here.

This article shows maps of how (not very big) these protests actually are. About 3 blocks is it. It also shows the protests during the day, more people who are peaceful, vs night time, fewer people who are violent. As of yesterday, a mere 42 people had been arrested.

42.

Tell me why they need over 4,000 military troops to cover 3 square blocks for 42 arrests?

A British reporter who was also hit. Protestors dragged him to safety and made sure he got medical care.

Im not sure if this document will open, but he is keeping a list of journalists being targeted.

The general opinion seems to be emerging that what is happening in LA, is merely a dress rehearsal for the rest of the country.

The real fear is that Trump will say that there is insurrection and he can then do what he likes.

My questions are

Does he have to go to law to be able to call this.

Can he be stopped by the courts?

Here is the video of the Australian journalist being shot with a rubber bullet. There was absolutely no danger to those officers.

You can see it in the video. He looked right at her, unarmed with her microphone, lifted the gun and shot her with a bullet.

FOR NO REASON.

And we have no idea who this officer is because he is wearing a mask.

imaround Tue 10-Jun-25 20:00:09

I might add, they are shooting journalists with rubber bullets and "detaining" them and removing them from scene with no explanation. Why would they need to do that? Hmmm...

imaround Tue 10-Jun-25 19:58:14

They don't care about free speech, unless it is what they choose. You can talk all you want about abortion, unless it is for abortion. You can talk all you want about immigration, as long as it is anti-immigration. You can talk about Trump, as long as it is not anti-Trump.

These are the men with masks that people are afraid of in the US right now. This is in Denver, not Los Angeles by the way. These men are going door to door looking for migrants in Denver. Like this.

You can, I imagine, see why people are scared. Wouldn't you be if these men showed up at your door?

Let's also not forget that what these "officers" are doing is in violation of the law and our constitutional rights, which is why there are protests to begin with. The feds can stop this at any time. All they have to do is follow the law and no one protests against them.

Maremia Tue 10-Jun-25 19:12:33

All very well to ban masks in public, but one of the many complaints against ICE is that were masks and don't show identity papers.

Galaxy Tue 10-Jun-25 18:54:32

That would also mean the right not to wear a mask presumably.

growstuff Tue 10-Jun-25 18:49:45

What happened to the hit squad from the US to ensure Brits have free speech? I thought free speech included being able to demonstrate and wear a mask if that's what you want.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 10-Jun-25 18:31:11

Forget the I’m sun is in my eyes and on my screen

GrannyGravy13 Tue 10-Jun-25 18:30:31

I’m perhaps the USA is playing catch up with the UK?

Galaxy Tue 10-Jun-25 18:18:47

When I see someone in a mask ( not a covid one obviously) I am uneasy, what their politics are is of little importance to me. Many many people particularly women feel the same. As I said my concern is also of the state mandating what to wear but I suspect many people won't worry about that.

imaround Tue 10-Jun-25 18:11:34

It is hypocritical that Republicans are OK with Federal agents masked and not providing ID when working, but then be scared when protestors are masked.

Republicans aren't afraid of people in masks. They are afraid of who they perceive as liberal in masks.

It is also very hypocritical that they claim mask mandates in 2020 were unconstitutional and are now mandating that masks can't be worn. Either we get to decide on wearing masks or not, not when it suits them.

Their mantra seems to be "rights for me but not for thee".

Galaxy Tue 10-Jun-25 17:37:24

So I think this is one of the reasons the Democrats may not win again, they are out of touch with what people want, people are on the whole frightened of those in masks, I can certainly think of some very threatening abusive men on protests who have worn them. Now personally I have concerns in terms of civil liberties ( similar to my concerns about the burqa issue, i.e that the state mandating what to wear is often a dangerous thing) but my guess is that very many people would be very pleased about a mask ban.

imaround Tue 10-Jun-25 17:10:16

I can't even wrap my brain around this to even give a synopsis. Basically, he wants to be able to send migrants to countries they may be tortured in, as long as the government says they won't torture the people he is sending.

Executive order No 196.

Wearing a mask in public is now a crime.

I don’t see that as a bad thing tbh.
