Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

Yes of course.

But we are currently being faced with the far right.

The UK rounds up illegal migrant's and deports them, are we a far right government or is California a far left government.?

Should a state follow a different migration policy the the national policy, these are not Assylum seekers they are economic migrants, would we allow Scotland to to have an open door policy.?

You clearly don’t understand the implication of what is happening in the USA - although perhaps you do😮

I understand that the US is trying to control the number of migrants entering the US.
For what it’s worth I think Trump is doing everything the wrong way, in Ukraine, Gaza and the US.
Controlling migration is probably the least worse thing he is doing, if California is not controlling immigrants, they need to fall in line.

Absolutely! Hopefully there will be something that would keep him in the USA. Surely there must be some way the UK could "postpone" it indefinitely.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 10-Jun-25 14:46:38

flump, I'm hoping that events keep Mr Trump at home. Failing that, I'm up for a silent crowd turning their backs as he passes.

Wyllow3 Tue 10-Jun-25 14:40:09

Ignore him. Thats what he'd hate most. Hope, if he does come, there is a campaign. Stay at home, stay at home!

flump Tue 10-Jun-25 14:38:26

Should Trump's visit to the UK be cancelled?

If it still goes ahead, would it be better that no-one lines the street as he passes or should there be a silent protest?

Interesting that the mask law comes at a time when facial recognition use has accelerated.

Executive order No 196.

Wearing a mask in public is now a crime.

Maybe, when Trump comes here on his state visit instead of the coach ride down the Mall [which was never going to happen anyway for security reasons] we should give him a very long and boring military parade after which he has to inspect our troops; hundreds of them. Then again that isn't fair to our wonderful armed forces.

MazieD, it just shows how inadequate words can be on this thread, without hearing the 'feeling' behind them. My concern is the exact opposite i.e. that Trump can indefinately and universaly maintain this disruption.

Gavin Newsum was very impressive in a speech pushing back against Trump.

Sky.

Whiff

Just read the BBC news and watched a video of an Australian reporter got shot on the leg by a rubber bullet. What is going on . So glad I live here .

I would hold that thought. This uprising of the far-right is going on all round the world and the last time we saw something like this was in Europe not the USA.

Just thinking back to what so many people had to go through when the fight in the US was all about colour not "illegal immigration". Then my thoughts jump to Germany where, while scape goats where openly the Jews, communists, socialists anc trade unionists were disappeared and, more secretly, the disabled. This is following such a common route.

I'm not someone who regularly prays but my brain is currently putting a message out, just in case, hoping that someone in the US government takes hold of the situation. My worries are not helped by the fact that my American family are still only telling us about very mundane, everyday stuff. We are normally a family that talks politics whenever we can.

Yes. The thing I keep getting back to is that there seems so much complacency and misunderstanding about a far right government is capable of, and will do.

Given that Trump no longer wants America to be the protector of the western world, who is this birthday show of military strength aimed at? The American people perhaps??

Just like Putin

On Saturday there is to be a military parade in Washington to celebrate the 250th birthday of the army. It coincides with Trump’s birthday.

$40 million is to be spent to celebrate to all intents Trump’s birthday.

This is deeply un-American. Or at least was.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 07:16:58

Former top military figures have said that Trump is politicising the military, by using them against American citizens and domestic politics.

Trump has signalled that LA is only the start. He has declared that there will be troops everywhere.

The question is - will troops be happy firing against their own fellow citizens?

I would hope that there are powerful people who are getting organised behind the scenes to stop this.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 06:43:49

It is getting worse.

I’m not sure what I’d do if I was in America.

Fight against what is rapidly becoming a police state - if not something far worse

Or

Take the wind out of a Trump’s sails and let the thing disappear - but this can only be short term I think. I suspect he is intent on far worse as far as the constitution is concerned

Where is the opposition, what on earth are the democrats and surely there must be some republicans who believe in the rule of law?
