Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

I don't see why it is of import if people wandered over.
They wandered over and made the land their home.
Then immigrants came and made problems. Now the immigrants are rounding up other immigrants.

Dare say somebody will be happy to argue with me and put me right any minute now.

PoliticsNerd What rubbish about GrannyGravy13 and extremist views, I actually laughed when I read it.Have you ever met anyone with real extremist views I wonder. If you had you would know the difference.

Yes, I have met such prople from many nationalities.

I am happy to admit I'm wrong and apologise, if I have picked up on the wrong "Granny", but the instant belief in what newly met American's said (presumably because it met their own bias) made me think it was one "Granny" in particular.

Native Americans wandered over from Asia and what is now Russia via a land bridge!

So SOME people believe. There are many theories about how the different groups of original settlers came to be in America.

However, it does appear to be true that later settlers took land by force or false promises from the pre-existing population. Many Americans, not a race that generally looks outside itself, now accept this.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 07:45:48

No I’m really not. I understand the implication all too well, but I am really not prepared to give Trump the reaction he is hoping for.

He is a pathetic individual who if allowed will be the downfall of the USA which will inevitably spread to the world.

I have absolutely no doubt that this has been planned, along with all the show of the military etc over a number of years, and I refuse to react the way he is hoping people will do.

The politicians need to stop this now, and through the courts as I read that what Trump is doing is illegal. If the opposition can’t get its act together - well - what is there to say?

If I was a young American or even a less ancient one, you would see me on the streets, but I’m not sure that is the cleverest thing to do, because it is playing into trumps hands.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 09-Jun-25 07:45:16

I fear for the USA under trump. In just a few short months they have become a pariah nation with no redeeming features.

Allsorts Mon 09-Jun-25 07:33:29

Heart goes out to those people, I saw the brutality meted out. This will be Trumps undoing. It's not tge way to treat people. If there are illegals do it properly.
There will be a law that says if illegal, they and their children can be deported.
Whitewave you seem to dismiss the enormity of this. Those few hundred people had family members taken from them, children, is that perforative? It's cruel, violent and totally over the top and unnecessary . If someone tried to take my child, sibling I would be scared and fight for them. Especially when you know where they end up.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 07:19:58

That is why I think it is performative.

The protesters need to rethink their strategy. Don’t do the obvious, because that is what Trump is prepared for.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 07:11:27

No neither really, just wishful thinking.

But when looking at the footage, you have to ask yourself what police and military plus other nefarious “militia” - all armed to the teeth are doing facing a few hundred people which is nothing more than any country sees any day of the week.

It is certainly not Jan 6th - when Trump refused to help the police in their actions.

It is pathetic.

Honestly, it looks ridiculous. This is just performative.

It will all fade away in a day or two.

Gosh, that's optimistic. And naive.

Make is make sense right windmill?

Next year it will be 250 years since the War of Independence when the American colonists kicked out the Brits because they resented being dictated to by a parliament and a King 3,500 miles away.

Now they have a king once again.

And they democratically voted him in.

I had to get caught up in the news, I was confused at how we got to the point of the Marines being put in standby.

Apparently after the national guard arrived, things escalated. They are firing rubber bullets into the crowds. An Australian journalist was hit by one.

Trumps rhetoric on this is dangerous. If those Marines deploy, something very bad is going to happen, none the least of which will be that every single one of them will be in violation of their oath to the Constitution. After that they are just mercenaries in my opinion.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 03:48:56

Sounds like they are putting 500 Marines on ready to deploy in California.

It is blatantly against the Posse Comitatus Act.

It was always a matter of time. Ghastly, predictable. The courage of those standing up to him.

There is live feed on the BBC looking at what is going on in LA.

Another worrying thing is, too, that whilst all this is happening in the USA and could escalate, what could happen in the rest of the world?

A lot of worrying unpredictables, yes. One man can cause so much - 😡😡😡😡

It would have to be untrue, to be libellous.

Indeed, watching him and Epstein lechering over girls in a video, made me feel sick. We know that Epstein procured under age girls.

Terric, you have the support and sympathy of many people here in the UK.

yes, wow, what a brilliant analysis but above all - good to hear of the resistance

I hope we never have to take tips from this. Watching you, Reform.

I really wouldn't make any assumptions about Trump and legality Allira. I think anyone doing so puts themselves in the place of the frog in the Frog and the Scorpion tale.

Add to this the general bias of GrannyGravy13's posts and I think it's reasonable to assume that she will lean towards anyone who agrees with her generally extremist views.

This www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TD5rTXj-_4 might provide a little balance.

Oh dear.

I post a comment given to me by an American holidaymaker and according to you I have extremist views

The sun is shining, the sea is glistening and I am having a fabulous holiday, I really cannot be bothered to begin to put you right…

There's no point in trying!

Have a good holiday, it's like winter here.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 08-Jun-25 20:48:30

Are the troops there to silence protesters? Or what?

That isn’t a liberal democracy that is authoritarianism.

I'm beginning to see why Americans are so keen to keep their guns. This could really turn nasty.

This 100%. I am a liberal and I refuse to give up my guns right now.

Trump is placing the military along the border and across towns all over the country. He is preparing for a war IMO.
