Horrendous scenes in Ballymena

The violence against the police and harassment of innocent people is appalling and now spreading across the region.
I’ve not seen scenes like this for many years.

And it isn’t in the least silly to be reminded that the real victim in this whole sorry mess is the young girl.

Oreo Wed 11-Jun-25 20:27:31

It’s human nature.
With any shocking cases such as this ,if the alleged perpetrators are foreign it causes more anger. It would be just as shocking if they were Irish but local feeling about a lot of immigration in their area comes to the fore.

Allira Wed 11-Jun-25 20:25:34

How silly

Do not call me silly
Thank you.

I should have said, the murderer and family are from the Roma community.

mulberry7 Wed 11-Jun-25 20:22:11

As I understand it, the boys are Roma, which is not the same as Romanian, although many Roma do come from there. There was a horrifying murder of a 24 year old teacher in Offaly two years ago, and the perpetrator is now in prison. A brother, his own wife and a sister-in-law are before the courts at the moment to ascertain what they knew about it all and whether they burned the murderer's clothes to help conceal the crimes. This publicity does not do the Roma community in general much good, and indeed many of that ethnicity are involved in petty crime in Ireland, and more serious law-breaking.. Not all, however, but many fear intimidation from their clansmen. Many come from areas in Europe where they may have past bad experiences with agencies of the law. The murderer in question, above, lived in local authority housing with his extended family and fourteen children, and was on disability payment. along with the rest of the family. I don't know what the solution is. I do know that many Romanians in Ireland are annoyed by being confused with the Roma community. Ordinary Irish people (as one, I ask, do such exist? smile) when in difficult straits because of inflation, inability to find homes, their own poverty and so on, have been agitated for some time about all this. Who knowa how and when it will all end!

lafergar Wed 11-Jun-25 20:18:15

How silly, of course as women and Grandparents we care.

We care that some poor girl has been attacked, we care that police have been attacked, we care that a Roma family were driven from their home and we care that people have to put signs up saying they are Filipino. All of it is wrong.

Allira Wed 11-Jun-25 20:13:15

Honestly!

Does no-one care anything about the girl at all?
Whoever the perpetrators were.

Everyone is so obsessed with perceived racism that the victim is forgotten in all this.

I don't believe Gransnet sometimes.

Oreo Wed 11-Jun-25 19:55:10

They could be both.

growstuff Wed 11-Jun-25 19:52:13

PS. To David. The majority of traveller children in the UK have Irish roots. Are you now lumping together Irish travellers, Roma and Romanians?

The boys needed an interpreter in court.

So were they Roma or Romanian?

The genuine Roma - Romany are usually fine, it’s the other traveller “ hangers on “ that are trouble.

The school my youngest GD just left has a major problem with traveller children. Behavior is so bad that many parents have moved their children and the school roll has halved, nothing the school can do they have to take them

David I have no idea whether the accused are Romanian or Roma. The Roma experience considerable discrimination within Romania itself - they are not the same. Whether or not the accused are Romanian, Roma or from outer space, it doesn't mean that everybody with the same label should be lumped together - that really is racism.

In any case, it appears the yobbos of Ballymena have used this an excuse to go on a racist spree, just as they did in Southport. There is absolutely no justification for that - ever!

The residents of Graz should be grateful that the latest shooter has been proven to be white and Austrian.

Are the two teenagers who have been charged Romanian or Roma? Whatever, it doesn't mean that every Romanian or Roma is guilty. There is no justification. It's just an excuse for a load of racist yobbos to have a punch up. I hope they are caught and sentenced to custodial sentences, just as people were after Southport.

Unless one of them is a middle class woman with a child and mental health.

Oh yes! Diddums! I forgot about her!

“It just shows that racist yobs will use any excuse - and up damaging their own community”

It’s the extremists that cause the trouble but they are the tip of a very large iceberg, the rest vote Reform, dont ignore them

What percentage of the population do you reckon have become extremists to cause this amount of damage? My guess it's more than a tiny minority.

Reform needs to distance itself from this kind of racism and destruction - quickly and decisively!

Serious question - is there an issue (or a perceived one) with Filipinos in NI.

No not at all Unfortunately Ballymena had a high proportion of low IQ idiots living there and also more come in from other towns . It also had a large heroin problem. This issue concerns 3 Roma 14 year olds who raped the girl. The Roma are not honest hardworking people.

Allegedly raped the girl! They haven't been convicted yet. I'm beginning to think there's a general problem of people with a low IQ in NI.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 11-Jun-25 18:48:26

What have we become?

I hate it

lafergar Wed 11-Jun-25 18:46:47

What?

lafergar Wed 11-Jun-25 18:45:51

Not on a precipice but serious action needs to be taken to control migration.

I'm sorry but I am entitled to my opinion. I think it's terrifying what I read on the most low key, local fb sites, so God knows what is pumping out on other sites.

If people with brown skin have to put up signs in their windows, what on earth have we become?

Immigration is an almighty mess. Like a lot of other things.

A reminder dear that the chaos we are seeing in LA is just below the surface here.

what's with the 'dear'?

I’d say it’s describing the reminder, and just another way of saying a ‘dear reminder’.

It is being used for anti Muslim rhetoric on X yet less than half a percent of Romanians are of Muslim faith according to the 2022 census.
