Seeing as he's probably about to board his plane, and road closures are now being put in place around Windsor, I thought I'd start a thread on Macron's state visit.
There's an awful lot riding on it.
Nice to see the younger royals getting involved too.

It's an impossible situation for the French police on these beaches. Not only do they have the worry of not causing harm to those in the boats, but they also risk their own lives. There are reports of a few being physically injured by desperate people in the boats, as well as the risk of actually getting into trouble in the water themselves.

People have to carry ID in nearly all countries. Police, employers, landlords, hospitals etc are allow to ask for a peson’s ID. The UK is a ‘soft touch’ because people can move around freely and get illegal work.

If a French person trying to stop an illegal person from crossing the channel and caused the death of that illegal immigrant eg through drowning, he would be charged with that person’s death.

Even some UK soldiers who served in Ireland, Afghanistan 20+ years ago are facing court trials now.

Asylum Matters
France actually receives a much larger number of asylum claims than Britain – around 167,000 in 2023, compared to 67,000 in the UK

It's already taken!
Twankey is a green tea 😁

Does anyone know why Mick Jagger and Elton John were at the banquet? I just had a look at the menu, looks delicious and very British as you would expect, even down to our “champagne.”

our “champagne.”
British sparkling wines have won prestigious world awards, beating even champagne!
One English sparkling wine achieved world recognition, causing a media frenzy when it scored more points in a blind tasting than those from Pol Roger, Veuve Clicquot and Taittinger

We need to find a good name now, sparkling wine just doesn't sound prestigious, does it.

Doesn’t Veuve mean widow in French? I guess we could call ours, in true British tradition, Widow Twankey?

Here's a thing.....it is possible to hold one or more idea at a time.

To be worried about apparently undocumented people arriving here, to think the system is totally broken (why?) to believe that all human beings are entitled to be treated humanely and to be very grateful indeed to those from an immigrant background who do jobs many others can't/ won't.

Yes.

Freya, your post about whitewave is as rude as you say hers was. It’s also a personal attack and refers to other threads so breaching rules I suspect

Whitewave suggestion that those who refer to asylum seekers as illegals, are often older and less educated has I believe been born out by research. I’m older and less well educated than some gransnetters but I see people as asylum seekers not illegals, until proved to have no right to be here, when I’d like to see them returned to their country of origin -

Freya’spost was not at all rude, it was a justified response to a very rude post.

But it is only a big issue to some - notably the old demographic, Tory voters and less educated.

There are far bigger issues.

Like the economy

Defence

Intelligence

Etc etc.

How very rude!!

What makes you think that you are better educated than those of us that worry about the number of undocumented illegal (mostly young men) immigrants arriving on our shores. It should be a big issue for everyone and it certainly will be if it continues year on year out

The thousands that arrive by small boats per year equate to a city the size of Norwich and the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate.

You must live in a very rural area to not be touched by what is happening. Take your blinkers off

That is typical of that poster. Unless you think the same as them, if you dont agree with importing thousands of men who we know nothing about, you are ignorant and ill educated.
Well said.

Well said indeed 👏👏👏👏👏

I hope that talks are covering closer trade ties with France and the EU, as trading with the USA seems increasingly fraught with unpredictability and volatility.

Because it’s a load of rubbish could be one factor😁

Now you have to provide evidence to show that the report is a load of rubbish.

Or is it just your belief?

I guess that is the answer.

I don’t actually have to do anything.😜

That's refreshingly good to hear Allira, but I feel for those Afghan translators and others, who put themselves and their families into the firing line by working with the Allies. They should have been fast tracked out.

MayBee70 Wed 09-Jul-25 18:03:15

Memories of them trying to get onto planes; having to hide from the Taliban because they’d worked for the UK government sad.

If we hadn’t let the Afghan people down so badly we wouldn’t have as many people arriving from Afghanistan as we currently do.

But they have been invited.
They have been welcomed in this area.

And half their families are left behind. Shameful.

Hang on a wee sec...just checking that there is space behind the couch.
So, if you are living on mainland Britain, unless you can trace 'undiluted heritage' back to those mesolithic hunter gatherers, who walked back into the post Ice Age empty landscape, from mainland Europe, before the Doggerland area became submerged then

I am not a Tory voter !

It’s a big issue right across the board and including our government too, are they all the older demographic, tory voters and less educated? 😂Honestly the twaddle sometimes written on here.

As I said previously take that up with the report producing the data.

I can’t understand why people are so touchy about a simple report.

It's not the report that we are 'so touchy about' it's because you were calling people Tory voters (as some kind of insult) and less educated. It is your remarks that are so offensive not the 'simple report'

But I am not. For heavens sake, how often must I reiterate it.

I was providing evidence of the demography of a minority of the population see immigration as the biggest problem.

I was not suggesting who these people are it was the report!

I am not going to repeat it a single time more as it is getting boring! 😡

Sorry, I thought it was a recent report by a University.

Oh I’ll get that as well. Bear with.

Long thread... is the discusssion about immigrants, who are keeping our care homes, NHS etc going or is it about refugees?
Refugees are a small part of the immigration issue.
