So. My ex partner came to pick our daughter up (he is a conspiracy theorist who thinks even the moon landings werent real.}

He says companies like Blackrock own the World and it is nothing to do with the goverment, and that the elected parties mean nothing and there is stuff going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about.

Comments?

Galaxy Thu 24-Jul-25 15:57:38

Well done on getting out of that.

62Granny Thu 24-Jul-25 16:12:03

Who are Blackrock? I would of thought that a few BIG companies do control the world's wealth, if you think about it, but it takes a stupid person to think they have the ability to control this.
I thought conspiracy theorists thought the moon landings were Not real, because the majority think they were or am I wrong? I know the shadow theory was doing the rounds some years ago ( saying that there could not be a shadow in the photo of the man in a space suit).

petra Thu 24-Jul-25 16:17:40

He sounds like a catch. 😂

Then there are the sinister individuals, thankfully one less now Klaus Schwab has been ejected into the blue yonder thank you Mr Bond but no doubt he has a successor. Ponder on why Bill Gates is the biggest private owner of farmland in the US and why would any one individual want to have that all of that at his disposal unless they want some hand in controlling the most valuable of commodities food hmm

It can be quite scarey finding out that some of these theories have a basis in truth, like big tech companies buying land in central and south America to build their own utopias where there is no governemnt, and people will live on their ideas.
Those of us who have been around the block a bit may remember hippy communes from the 1960s (I think Israel had the kibbutz system which was attractive to many) but what happened was they were unsustainable as models for living as people tend to fall out, and some people rise to power and abuse it, just like in the real world.
I think people with too much money (and there seems to be plenty of those around just now) like to play God until they realise we are all just human.
I'm not sure about Blackrock. I have heard the name, but have better things to do with my time that give them that, as well as my money!

Blackrock has assets of $10 trillion

There modus operandi (according to them) is helping people experience financial well-being by understanding their investment objectives and seeking the best risk-adjusted returns

They have fingers in many many pies…

TerriBull Thu 24-Jul-25 17:39:15

Blackrock was among the movers and shakers that pressurised companies to adopt ESG, although they've been down playing it lately. Anyway aren't we all lucky to have hedge funds and banks give us guidance as to how we should conduct ourselves hmm since when did banks and financial institutions, given what they've inflicted on the world in both in the recent and and more far flung past become such moral arbiters they're worse than the catholic church for hiding behind a veneer of sanctity similar though in their reach and their desire to accrue immense wealth for the few not the many.

Blackrock isn't a charity, so I'm sure it makes a profit, but it doesn't actually own $10 trillion in assets. It manages assets (Google reckons it's $11.5 trillion).

growstuff Fri 25-Jul-25 00:29:11

Blackrock has been the subject of a number of conspiracy theories, including this one:

Here's another debunked myth about Blackrock:

Why do you think Bill Gates has been buying farmland? Should we be worried?

Maybe I'm being naive, but Bill Gates has an awful lot of money and I'd rather he bought farmland than waste it on sending people into space.

growstuff Fri 25-Jul-25 01:15:34

There is more than a hint of anti-semitism behind the conspiracy theories about Blackrock and some others. They're not that much different from the tropes and propaganda about Jewish tentacles encircling the world, etc.

nanna8 Fri 25-Jul-25 01:46:23

Of course there is a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that few would know about. It always has been that way and always will be. Nothing much to be done about it. It is a worry when you hear things like the Russians controlling elections outside Russia and when you hear that the Chinese own half of the land in Australia.

growstuff Fri 25-Jul-25 02:56:29

China doesn't own half the land in Australia. I fact checked it. It owns about 2.2%. The UK owns about the same amount.

MaizieD Fri 25-Jul-25 07:00:40

According to this article from Farmers Weekly three Australians are in the top five landowners in the world. China doesn’t get a look in in Australia…

Interesting article worth reading if land ownership interests you.

In many cases all those acres are not productive farmland they are hill, moorland and in the case of Australia outback bush land, all with limited food production value. In the UK the Duke of Grosvenor, James Dyson, etc do have productive food businesses on some of the land others don’t.

nanna8 Sun 27-Jul-25 11:39:07

The Chinese have a 99 year lease on the port of Darwin. That is strategically one our most important entry points.

That's irrelevant to the claim in the OP that investment companies own the world. I was just pointing out that individuals own huge chunks of the world...

I'm with Galaxy and petra- you dodged a bullet there, Desdemona .
I suspect he may have views on bullets and grassy knolls, too.

You've only got one life; don't waste it with that eedjit.

Behind the scenes, get your ducks in a row and organise your divorce while he knows nothing about it.

Except that a square mile of London is somewhat more significant than the same are of moorland in terms of area

Not sure about a conspiracy theory. But l see the global economy as being mainly run byvery big companies and players.

Really fueled by the digital and global comms revolution..Just wait until AI really kicks in.

I also see Global trading and economy as the but truly devastaing next step.unfortunately.

I recently saw a TV interview with an American Economist/Strategist who said that Yanks take their know how in acquiring buying and owning from how the British Empire operated!
