The earthquake and volcano could have been much, much worse. The Kamchatka peninsula is where the Russian Pacific fleet is housed, and Avacha Bay is the base for their nuclear submarines. Satellite pictures are showing damage to the base, with some piers twisted out of place following the tsunami. The Russians say the base was built to withstand earthquakes and tsunamis and protect the fleet but I think we were all probably quite lucky this time around.

In many places all ships in ports were ordered out to sea, because in the open sea a tsunami will be nothing but a large swell in the sea that ships of aall szes will float ove, almost without noticing.

i would imagine that as soon as the earthquake happened the Russian fleet would have been ordered out to sea until the tsunami fear had passed. Any damage to port installations was probably done by the earthquake - and this would be less likely to affect the ships in port at the time.

I have an open mind about people who 'see' things. I think it's part of the brain that only some are fortunate to be able to access.
My mum told me not to move to a house we were going to rent 200 miles away for OHs temporary job as she saw the house falling down on us. I put it down to her not wanting us to leave.
On entering the house the hallway carpet was covered in white plaster dust from a ceiling repair due to a burst pipe. Landlord hadn't mentioned it as when we asked he said it had all been repaired. 2 months later my 7yr old was in the bath when I heard a loud bang. I ran upstairs and a huge piece of plaster had fell from the ceiling and, thankfully, landed 6 inches from my child's head in the bath, onto the floor. Obviously the plaster drying out from the leak now we put the heating on.

I read that Oprah Winfrey did open her road up.

What age are your grandchildren? I can assure you they will have seen or heard worse or will just ignore. Don't know any children that watch the news.....

Oprah Winfrey is not coming out of this well. Looks like she owns a substantial amount of land in Hawaii - and that includes a road that people need to use to evacuate themselves to higher land - and she is refusing to let them use it!!!!!!

What on earth harm would it do her to let them use their own road for a few days - to get to higher land and then to get back from it again once the tsunami has passed?

I don’t know where you read that crap but it’s a lie !!!!!!!!!

Fear of a huge tsunami around the pacific edges seems to be receding with many countries either removing all tsunami warnings or downgrading them to advisory.

On holiday on Maui we've seen many private roads. The private roads a nicer, shorter distance, and secure for the owner. Always seemed to be a way to the water for regular people.

However, I believe her road is opened to public for emergency.

Yes, it is.

I did wonder if it was true - she opened them in 2023, during the Maui wildfires.

Surely local authorities can requisition the road in a time of national emergency.
And Oprah can complain about it later.

I would have thought so.
Need to double-check that, Oprah wouldn't sink that low, surely?

It's not true. Even the much maligned Daily Mail says it is a false claim.

I posted this on the GM thread this morning.

I was out to dinner with my friend of 45 years last night, she sees things usually plane crashes. Half way through our meal she said

I have a bad feeling, something is going to happen, I feel it’s going to come from the sea, an earthquake and following tsunamis

I woke up to this news this morning, and feel really discombobulated 😿

Allira Wed 30-Jul-25 10:09:21

I didn't see it on the news, Maybee, DH did and told me then I looked online.

Aldom Wed 30-Jul-25 09:58:47

Maybee, look at the BBC news online for more information. flowers

MayBee70 Wed 30-Jul-25 09:56:24

What’s happening? I can’t put the news on as I’m looking after the grandchildren today and don’t want them to see anything distressing. It sounds awful….
