BBC report

“Israel has faced mounting criticism over the 22-month-long war with Hamas, with UN-backed experts warning of widespread famine unfolding in the besieged territory.

On Tuesday members of an international group of former leaders known as "The Elders" for the first time called the war in Gaza an "unfolding genocide" and blamed Israel for causing famine among its population.

Following a visit to the Gaza border, Helen Clark and Mary Robinson, a former prime minister of New Zealand and a former president of Ireland, said in a joint statement: "What we saw and heard underlines our personal conviction that there is not only an unfolding, human-caused famine in Gaza. There is an unfolding genocide."

'The Voice of Hind Rajab' got a 23 minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. More details about who was Hind and what became of her are on the Guardian online just now.

I have just watched this and could see how many were reduced to tears. Applause for 23 minutes for the little one shot by the IDF while pleading for help.
The brutality is horrifying and appalling.

'Israeli officials have repeatedly described how Hamas' military strength has been depleted.' (Guardian archives) or just google it for yourself.
The danger they presented at the outset of this latest offensive no longer exists, and therefore neither does the often used excuse for this offensive degenerating into the current genocide.

I thought the word 'Israelis' may have been enough but sorry you were confused.

That’s ok, being Welsh I am Welsh regardless of which country I am in,

I was talking about the National Library of Israel. It was you who mentioned a National Library of England Anniebach.

You omitted to say which library

National Library of Wales, Scotland or England ?
Other countries have national libraries not just the UK but you mustn't have known that.

There is no national library of England, they see themselves as the National Library of the UK, surely you know that ?

the IDF thought a Hamas fighter was nearby but not near enough to have been killed along with the five children angry

Israelis have climbed onto the roof of the National Library with a banner saying "You have abandoned and also killed" aimed at their government.

There has been more killing in Gaza City. Five children were killed queuing for water as the IDF thought a Hamas fighter was nearby.
A three year old has lost his parents and two sisters in another attack.
Israel say this is 'under review'.

The United Nations now has 193 member countries. The ones you mention were the original members and I'm not sure about your point that they were Muslim?

Anniebach Wed 03-Sept-25 20:08:53

This interests me, I like facts , so one Jewish State with -

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation founded in 1969 has 57 members, 56 of which are also member states of the United Nations, with 51 countries having a Muslim majority.

Hamas seems to be very well supported by a number of Arab countries and this worries me. Logic suggests that Hamas doesn’t stand much of a chance against Israel but it has taken very many months of fighting without any resolution.
Of course Israel is going to push its advantage to create a solution that Israel can live with?

Babs03 Wed 03-Sept-25 19:40:24

Hamas has stated very publicly that it wants the complete destruction of Jews. So where do you go from there? Maremia

Yes ronib, but what world do you live in where a bunch of terrorists in a stateless strip of demolished land can destroy all Jews?
They can’t.
But if I was betting woman I would put money on Israel destroying Gaza, is mostly done anyway.
I am surprised anyone listens to the hyperbole of Hamas, one only has to look at Tel Aviv and then at any now demolished town or city in Gaza to see who is destroying who.

You concentrate all of your superior military skill, expert marksmen, high end surveillance capability, well trained and experienced service personel, assistance from allied countries on eliminating Hamas.
Was that meant to be a difficult question for me?

Difficult to understand, you speak of eliminating Hamas and I say the very same but this is not genocide, unless you believe all in Gaza are Hamas terrorists . What countries are giving assistance, I need a break after trying to understand your answer

Why , a member of Israeli parliament speaks of genocide and it’s taken as fact it will happen. The terrorist government of Israel says the same thing about Jews it’s ignored

Maremia Wed 03-Sept-25 19:12:54

All will be destroyed, that is what he said. Not just herded into one, wee, tiny, uninhabitable space, or sent off to other places...but destroyed.
If that is not 'genocide' then what is your legally acceptable word for it?
We are witnessing an unfolding genocide.
How many children do you know of, who are 'implacable opponents' ronib?
Are you excusing this stance?

ronib Wed 03-Sept-25 19:07:06

When faced with an implacable opponent, one response is to meet fire with fire. It’s certainly not a case of polite conduct. Hamas has never disguised its complete anathema towards Israel. Is this deliberate goading?

Eloethan Wed 03-Sept-25 18:57:55

anniebach The fact that a member of the Israeli parliament feels quite at liberty to make statements such as "We need to destroy all Gazans" without any comeback demonstrates that this is the true aim of Netanyahu.

They are well on their way to doing this anyway, no vote apparently needed.

'Israeli lawmaker MK Moshe Saada said calls for Gaza and its population to be destroyed had seeped across the political spectrum'
Yes GNs, a member of Netanyahu's parliament has actually used the word 'DESTROYED'.

Was this said in parliament, was there a vote, does he have sole power to order the destroying?
