BBC report

“Israel has faced mounting criticism over the 22-month-long war with Hamas, with UN-backed experts warning of widespread famine unfolding in the besieged territory.

On Tuesday members of an international group of former leaders known as "The Elders" for the first time called the war in Gaza an "unfolding genocide" and blamed Israel for causing famine among its population.

Following a visit to the Gaza border, Helen Clark and Mary Robinson, a former prime minister of New Zealand and a former president of Ireland, said in a joint statement: "What we saw and heard underlines our personal conviction that there is not only an unfolding, human-caused famine in Gaza. There is an unfolding genocide."

I would like to recommend a documentary film called No other Land, about the West Bank and what is happening there with the settlers. It won an Oscar last year and the directors, one Palestinian and his friend and colleague, a Jew, went to the west coast of America to receive their prize. On return to the west bank the palistinians were beaten up by the Israeli police. What a welcome. Despite it being released worldwide and the fact that the Oscar was presented in America, the only two countries who do NOT show this film are USA and Israel.

It’s a hard watch but it shows life how it is in the West Bank where settlers taking the opportunity of the world focus on Gaza regularly fence in land belonging to farmers and attack and kill anyone who objects, all this while Israeli police /army stand by and do nothing.

Ch4 had a shocking report about the w est bank on its 7 pm news this week.

If anyone feels they want to learn more about what is happening in the west bank while Gaza burns watch this if you can.

62000 deaths do not constitute genocide. Harold Wilson and his Labour government led the way with real genocide in Biafra

So true

Maybe it is genocide if those deaths occur in an area as small as Gaza? As for the way that those numbers are totally disregarded by some people, words fail me. It’s as if some human lives are worth less than others sad. Each one of those lives is a mother, father, son or daughter, sister or brother…

Yes as in all wars , who can forget the videos of released hostages being greeted home by their families, not knowing if
their loved one was alive until they came home

But it is the first that western allies supported until recently.

100 aid organisations report weaponisation of aid by Israel who by law have a responsibility for ensuring food gets to the population of Gaza. Food is within reach but Israel puts restrictions and stops the movement of aid in.
Never mind about Hamas. They can’t steal/sell what isn’t there.
As for war, it’s all one way, no rockets are coming from Gaza.

Despite all the voices now saying the same thing and increasing by the day, including those of western allies, there are some who still won’t believe that Netanyahu and his cronies are capable of this.
Obviously history has bypassed them big time for this is not the first powerful leader of a first world country who has been capable of genocide.

If all this is true about Hamas, just let independent journalists in!

The photo was taken at the Kerem Sholem aid crossing in Gaza. Israel had sent aid.

Yes I know ronib, trucks of aid are stuck, unable to be safely delivered because the IDF are opening fire on the trucks and the people queuing for aid. Has happened too many times now for it not to be a strategy.

And here is a link to a video showing Israelis destroying food aid to the West Bank.

Nothing should stop aid getting in when a famine is taking place in plain sight. Nothing.

ronib Thu 14-Aug-25 10:03:28

It hardly shows great humanity on the part of Hamas towards Gazans. It should be doing everything in its power to cooperate with Israel in alleviating starvation not adding to it. Babs03

Hamas was selling aid to pay for its fighters. Or so it is said. I think it’s proper for Israel to stop this. There’s a war going on and Israel intends to win it. Hamas has a responsibility also for its people.

‘Or so it is said’, indeed.
We all know Hamas are capable of atrocities but there is no mention of Hamas stealing from trucks from aid agencies on the ground in Gaza.

Babs03 Thu 14-Aug-25 10:00:39

Hamas stealing from aid trucks is another smoke screen. And even if they did on occasion do this it should not hinder the supply of aid to a dying civilian population.

More than 100 organisations have signed a joint letter calling on Israel to stop the "weaponisation of aid" into Gaza, as "starvation deepens".
Humanitarian groups, including Oxfam and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), say they are increasingly being told they are "not authorised" to deliver aid, unless they comply with the stricter Israeli regulations.
Groups risk being banned if they "delegitimise" the state of Israel or do not provide detailed information about Palestinian staff, the letter says.
Israel denies there are restrictions on aid and says the rules, introduced in March, ensure that aid "reaches the population directly and not Hamas".
According to the joint letter, most major international non-governmental organisations (NGO) have been unable to deliver a single truck of lifesaving supplies since 2 March.
They say Israeli authorities "have rejected requests from dozens of non-governmental organisations to bring in lifesaving goods", citing the new rules. More than 60 requests were denied in July alone.
Aid groups' inability to deliver aid has "left hospitals without basic supplies, children, people with disabilities, and older people dying from hunger and preventable illnesses", the statement said.
Sean Carroll, CEO of American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera), said: "Anera has over $7 million worth of lifesaving supplies ready to enter Gaza – including 744 tons of rice, enough for six million meals, blocked in Ashdod just kilometers away".
Israel said that any delays in delivering aid occur "only when organisations choose not to meet the basic security requirements intended to prevent Hamas's involvement".
Cogat, the Israeli military body in charge of aid, said nearly 20 organisations that completed the registration process are bringing aid into Gaza, with roughly 300 trucks entering daily.
The UN says 600 trucks of supplies a day are needed in Gaza.
The new guidelines introduced in March update the framework for how aid groups must register to maintain their status within Israel, along with provisions that outline how their applications can be denied or registration revoked.
Registration can be rejected if Israeli authorities deem that a group denies the democratic character of Israel or "promotes delegitimisation campaigns" against the country.
"Unfortunately, many aid organisations serve as a cover for hostile and sometimes violent activity," Israel's Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli told the Agence France-Presse news agency.
"Organisations that have no connection to hostile or violent activity and no ties to the boycott movement will be granted permission to operate," added Chikli.
Bushra Khalidi, Oxfam Policy Lead, said Israel had rejected more than $2.5m (£1.8m) of goods from entering Gaza.
She added: "This registration process signals to INGOs that their ability to operate may come at the cost of their independence and ability to speak out."

Video caption, Watch: How did Gaza get to the brink of starvation?
The warning comes as Israel steps up its bombardment of Gaza City, in preparation for a plan to take control of the city.
Israel says it will provide humanitarian aid to civilian populations "outside the combat zones", but has not specified whether that aid would be delivered by the Israel and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
Israel says the system is necessary to stop Hamas stealing aid, an accusation Hamas denies.
The UN this month reported that 859 Palestinians had been killed near GHF sites since May, a figure the GHF denies.
In the joint statement, Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa, MSF emergency coordinator in Gaza, said that the "militarised food distribution scheme has weaponised starvation".
The secretary-general of MSF, Chris Lockyear, told the BBC that GHF was a "death trap", and the humanitarian situation in Gaza was "hanging on by a thread".
Hamas's 2023 attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel, with 251 seized and taken into Gaza as hostages.
Israel's offensive has since killed nearly 62,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. It says that 235 people including 106 children have also died due to starvation and malnutrition.

It is immaterial to the fact that whatever the circumstances, Israel has a duty of care to its civilian population.

Israel is the ultimate power in Gaza.

ronib Thu 14-Aug-25 09:48:03

It’s definitely not immaterial to Israel wwm2. What a totally bizarre comment and shows an amazing inability to understand the dynamics involved.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Aug-25 09:23:54

Victim blaming is never terribly sensible. It is entirely immaterial whether Hamas stole aid.

Israel turned off food and water water supplies on Oct 9th 2023 to everyone in Gaza which in itself broke all international law.

The civilian population in Gaza has been short of supplies ever since.

Israel has a legal obligation to ensure that the civilian population is not impacted.

It has signally failed to carry out this legal obligation.

That is a war crime. Hiding behind Hamas skirts won’t cut it in a court of law.

ronib Thu 14-Aug-25 09:23:06

I read that Israel is demanding verification that aid is distributed by authorised agencies. It specifically wants to ensure that Hamas doesn’t steal aid. This may be slowing down distribution. Why would Hamas not comply in this situation if the lives of Gazans were saved?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 14-Aug-25 09:17:59

This unfolding disaster is a lesson in PR from both Hamas and the Israeli Government.

Neither side care about civilians, whether they be Palestinians or Israelis.

Israel is the bigger and stronger of the two militarily, Hamas knew this when they attacked on 7/10/23, I doubt they realised how far Israel would go.

With Hamas threatening to repeat 7/10 until there are no Jews left on the planet along with Israel vowing to eliminate Hamas in its entirety, I just see more suffering and many more deaths.

I wish I could foresee a solution and some hope, but realistically I cannot.

Hamas has to release the hostages, (alive and the bodies of the dead)

Israel has to let in Aid, unhindered.

Independent Aid agencies and press need unfettered safe access.

I have found videos online showing huge amounts of aid left on lorries so where is the UN in all of this? Where’s the urgency in getting aid to Gaza? Has this turned into a huge game of propaganda being played out by Hamas and who on earth would do this? Again why is the UN not doing so much more?

I so agree, Hamas are masters in the propaganda war with support from UN ,number of deaths always given by Hamas, numbers never questioned, not forgetting there were several
UN aid workers with Hamas in Israel October 2023

AGAA4 Thu 14-Aug-25 09:10:11

Israel will not give the go ahead for the food to get through. They need permission from Israel and it has not been granted.
Anyone trying to move a truck in will be shot by the IDF.
