BBC report

“Israel has faced mounting criticism over the 22-month-long war with Hamas, with UN-backed experts warning of widespread famine unfolding in the besieged territory.

On Tuesday members of an international group of former leaders known as "The Elders" for the first time called the war in Gaza an "unfolding genocide" and blamed Israel for causing famine among its population.

Following a visit to the Gaza border, Helen Clark and Mary Robinson, a former prime minister of New Zealand and a former president of Ireland, said in a joint statement: "What we saw and heard underlines our personal conviction that there is not only an unfolding, human-caused famine in Gaza. There is an unfolding genocide."

Is pretty desperate to try to twist the words of Lammy to make it sound as if all Palestinian men in Gaza are uncaring monsters.

AGAA4 Sun 31-Aug-25 14:32:39

Babies won't last long without nourishment and mothers are unable to produce milk as they are very undernourished. Same applies to unborn babies. They won't be fed either.
Adults can last much longer without food than babies so it's not playing the children card Anniebach

It’s troubling why women and babies,

Because pregnant women and new mothers are most at risk from starvation as are their babies. Lammy is right to say this and he isn’t implying that Palestinian men are not giving food to these women, he is trying to appeal to the consciences of those obstructing the distribution of aid in Gaza.

Anniebach Sun 31-Aug-25 14:19:47

Given all that has been said by you and others, food wasn’t getting into Gaza, Bob Geldof spoke of aid needed, he didn’t single out women and children, unless the men in Gaza are keeping food from women and children, Lammy seems to be playing the children card.

No that’s not true theworriedwell How could Hamas leave women in these conditions with such little compassion?

If they haven't got food and medicines because Israel won't let them in they can't give them to women. It is the Israelis who have no compassion and presumably no conscience although I heard on sky TV that the suicide rate for Israeli soldiers is rising as they can't live with what they've seen in Gaza so some do have a conscience. So sad

Nobody wants anyone to be killed ( I won’t say die as we all have to die) in an ideal world. But it isn’t, and extremists like hamas, even tho they formed the government there don’t care if their fellow Gazans including the kids are killed or not.
Gazans know that now sadly.

Unbelievable, completely unbelievable

The UK has announced further humanitarian support for Gaza as Israel signalled it would slow or stop aid into the north of the territory.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for Israel to allow a “surge in aid” as he pledged support for pregnant women and new mothers.

Do you really want them to starve? Babies to die?

Apologies for stupid question, the treatment of women and babies by Hamas !

The UK have been sending aid to Gaza during most of the war through the UN and other aid agencies. Pregnant women, new mothers and babies are suffering and it's right that the UK and others help them.

ronib Sun 31-Aug-25 11:58:03

£3 million to support midwives in Gaza. This is the right and moral position to take.

Please don’t stop at 61,000 but take the death toll into the future if Israel doesn’t win the territory it wants. Hamas over played its hand. Babs03

There are far more Jews in Israel than 61,000 and Hamas has said they want to kill them , 7.4 Million !

Well, I might say I could eat an elephant in one sitting but it doesn’t make it true Annie. There is no way in this world or any other that Hamas can kill everyone in Israel, is complete hyperbole. Even Iran could hardly touch Israel. They have defences that will deter any sovereign army let alone a bunch of terrorists. A dome of iron, one of the biggest armies in the region, a huge arsenal of weaponry, and nukes.
The terrorist attack on 7th of October is a complete mystery to me because Israel usually has iron clad security along the perimeter with Gaza. That is for the government to answer for at a later date when an independent investigation certainly needs to be done for the sake of the families of those who were killed.

For their honour they allow and watch others die ,

It's inevitable now that Israel will take the territory it wants but there will be many more deaths before that happens.
The US will take over then.

Annie right now Netanyahu has exceeded whatever Hamas did by 61,000.
And now babies and children as well as adults are dying of starvation.
Just how awful do you want it to get before you admit the response is disproportionate and equally savage.

You do numbers of dead given by Hamas, your choice , your choice to attempt to paint Hamas in lighter colours

If guns are equal to rape and strangulation then UK did equal to Dresden as Hamas did to Israel?

Democracy is a system of government where political power resides with the people, enabling them to influence decisions through principles like political equality, popular control, and representative elections. Originating from the ancient Greek concept of "demos" (people) and "kratos" (power), modern democracy requires fundamental rights, free and fair elections, a pluralistic political system, and transparent, accountable public administration to ensure the government serves the will of the people.
