I know GN will not change the lies in headlines unless the OP asks for it to be done. However, it's import all media show the truth.

I wonder when the law can be changes to endure this?

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Sept-25 12:05:53

Yes.
Just heard that.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 05-Sept-25 12:05:26

Apparently she has resigned from her ministerial positions

She is toast!

🥂🎉

What's the point of those silly little pictures please?

I notice when somebody says something unkind or offensive they often include them.

I think the whole AR " thing" is awful. The state of the country is awful and integrity is nowhere to be found.

Yes.
Once under fire I wouldn't have let it happen to me a second time M0nica.
I think yours would be a good plan if she is still found to be at fault here when the process is completed.

M0nica Fri 05-Sept-25 11:54:13

How many properties Angela Raayner does or does not own is immaterial. It could be half a property, it could be 25.

The central problem is that this is the second time there have been queries about the legalities of her house transfers in regard to whether proper tax was paid and whether she had been indulging in sophsticated tax avoidance. Now, tax avoidance is legal. But we have to ask whether a government Minister and previously vociferous Shadow Ministern who has been loud in condemning members of other parties when they do what she has done, eve though it was legal, is the kind of person we want involved in running the country, especially as Minister of Houseing.

Yes, what she did, she thought was legal, but given the problem she had last time she swapped properties, she really should have gone to a top of the trees advisor and got 2 or 3 opinions before doing what she did.

She is showing herself to be slapdash and indifferent to public opinion. Not good traits in a minister. I think she should resign and then in may be 6-9 months time, when keir Starmer i doing a reshuffle she can be reappointed but not as Minister of Housing.

We need to let them get on with doing their jobs and ignore all the media-induced sidetracking rubbish.

I agree but it isn't happening on GN, is it?

At the moment, threads about Angela Rayner are the top three in "News and Politics".

So I am right. Even though I agree with you that we should let them get on with doing their jobs and ignore all the media-induced sidetracking rubbish., it isn't happening on GN.

PoliticsNerd Fri 05-Sept-25 11:46:43

It is sad but hopefully we will hear a properly constructed answer about what has happened and what will happen if an error needs to be corrected, as the majority of tax errors do.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/03/angela-rayner-flat-controversy-how-did-it-happen-and-how-damaging-is-it

The above article from the Guardian is very clearly written explaining the hows and whys of this situation.

I was quite sympathetic with Rayner until I got to the part that she has had entanglements with HMRC and tax in the past (2015 sale of ex-council property).

She knows she should have taken proper legal advice, and ignorance cannot be her excuse.

Well, that’s true.

As the parent of a minor who has property in trust, she is deemed the part owner of a house.

And she is also the owner of a flat.

Truth rather than headlines. I’m all for it.

Her son is 17 I believe, so if she had waited until he was 18 to buy her apartment it wouldn’t be a problem? I find it all rather sad.

Kate1949 Fri 05-Sept-25 11:28:23

It's Rayner.

PoliticsNerd Fri 05-Sept-25 11:16:36

Sadly I think we probably have to accept that some people don't want democracy Lovetopaint.

Farage asks another country to attack us so he can gain power. People who want him to have that power, even if it destroys our democracy, make personal attacks on those they don't agree with. It must be very difficult being Angela Raynor at the moment. We have seen this before, and we are seeing it both here and elsewhere currently.

Do they read GN?

Lovetopaint037 Fri 05-Sept-25 11:04:25

She is the part owner of a property that she can never live in full time. She wanted to have a flat that was entirely her own. She goes about buying a flat to give her that long term assurance of a home. She pays what she believes is the right amount of tax but should have paid £40,000 more. Stop now and remind ourselves of the Johnson, and various other members of the Tory government shenanigans involving much larger amounts of money and how their dubious carrying on became almost a fixture. Now Angela Rayner has had her flat vandalised with graffiti. What for?For trying to secure her disabled son’s future and her own. Making a mistake and trying to rectify it.Shame on the media and those who read and then lap it all up to feed their prejudices.

Thank you Lathyrus3

The one thing that is true is that this is very complicated. Tax outside PAYE is complicated as are benefits. AI may be able to help but both need simplifying.

StripeyGran Fri 05-Sept-25 09:20:58

It's all just so sad. No integrity anywhere.

She does now.

But for how long?

grin

Primrose53 Fri 05-Sept-25 09:11:05

What a fuss over nothing!

It has already been explained on another thread that the GN mods chose not to change the headline because there is nothing wrong with it. The report button is there for genuine complaints not a couple of words that offend the delicate.

Just about every newspaper and TV prog has used the same headline.

As someone else said, she is toast anyway and few people have sympathy for her.

It’s not even a house, PN, it’s a flat.

How does that change things Maizie? Do you agree that some of the headlines are simply untrue?

What a delusional post.

Angela Rayner is toast and if she is not then Starmer should resign.
