I think any government minister from any political party who showed such a lack of judgement as to not seek tax advice when it was recommended in a letter that they should do so, should step down.

Just read all the posts Oreo, seriously, there are a thousand shades of grey. If you asked people to rank what they thought should happen, you would get lots of different answers, not all politically motivated - people all think differently, and not just about this case, about all of them. Of course there are some diehards, the black and white perspectives, there always are, but I don’t believe that is the majority.

I have written to the Parlimentary Commisioner for Standards several time about the behaviour of particular MPs where they clearly are in breach of the Nolan Principles. I receive polite acknowledgements but nothing every happens. Prima facie, there does appear to be a two tier system.

It's been galling this week to hear Farage - the Master of Incitement - speaking about incitement. He talks such a lot of word salad that sometimes it's hard to make sense of what he says. I was trying to pick the bones out of this to Republican Tom McClintock about free speech.

I think you know we are as citizens we should be free to make our minds up to express our opinions to a large extent to make our own mistakes provided … and we all know there's a limit to free speech. You know the professor talked about incitement earlier and of course you know we would be absolutely joined together on that, we don't want, we don't accept incitement and if people put out something irrational or inciteful but very quickly put their hands up and apologize and learn their lesson, that's kind of how the world is. I do not want government to be the arbiter of what I should think.

He seems to be saying you can say what you like, even if it is inciteful, so long as you apologise afterwards. Maybe he was talking about Lucy Connolly or maybe himself. Bit too late if some has been incited to commit a violent act as many did last summer; as someone has by spraying graffito on Rayner's new home.

It’s not new, successive governments knew all about it and did nothing, there has been no word of this government changing anything either. However it suits those with a high spending lifestyle, not those who invest in assets, because company shares have a value and someone has to own those shares.

Her only error was that she didn’t follow the advise of the conveyance solicitors, who recommended she gain specialist tax advice relating to her particular circumstances.

She’s accepted that she made a mistake and should have sought further advice. Because of that, she’s done the decent thing and resigned.

I personally don’t think she needed to resign, but it was deemed that her mistake meant her behaviour ‘wasn’t of the highest standard’ for someone in public office.

So be it. She’s accepted it. I’ve accepted it.

Now let’s ensure that the behaviour of all those in public office is held to the highest standard.
