Is anybody here Andy Burnham's mindreader?

No, clearly but speculation is food for hungry minds it seems...

And he would have to win it which at the moment might be a challenge.

Wouldn't he need to be an zMP first?

And there would have to be a vacancy.

Can't see this happening. Even if they found him a safe seat (is there any these days?) Reform win..? He's out of a Political career. Sadiq Khan same thing.

😆

We're only saying if we think he'd be OK for the job, growstuff.

There's a lot of unhappiness in the ranks of Labour MPs and Burnham's name has been mentioned a few times over the past few months.

Indulge us in our speculation...

There is, apparently, a seat in Manchester area with a Labour MP who may resign because of ill health. I doubt if he'd lose that one.

He was an MP for 16 years, has had government posts and seems to be making a success of his mayoral post. I'm not sure why anyone should think him less competent than Starmer who only became an MP in 2015 and who had no experience in government. I would also think that running Greater Manchester makes him more likely to be closer to the general populace than a Director of Public Prosecution.

I certainly like the principles set out on the Mainstream Labour website; they're far more what I would expect from a soft left Labour politician. Do people think he would renege on them once he got the job in the same way that Starmer did?

I thought he has said he isn't interested.

It would have to be a very safe seat, the extremists are on the march unfortunately.

sundowngirl Sat 13-Sept-25 16:47:45

I heard on the radio that one MP has offered to stand down in favour of Andy Burnham returning to Westminster

MollyNew Sat 13-Sept-25 16:42:51

How better things might have been if David Milliband had become Labour leader all those years ago.

I agree with Galaxy. Burnham took on the Mayoral job after he lost the leadership election in which I voted for him.

He has carved a very successful position for himself and I now doubt he would want to return to Westminster politics.

If he stood ahead as leader though, I would vote for him again...

Galaxy Sat 13-Sept-25 15:09:24

I would say it is interesting we are having this discussion though.

Granmarderby10 Sat 13-Sept-25 15:08:43

I think even Boris had some successes as London Mayor but beyond that…..
Is this it for choices for a Labour leader? Recycled “names” from a previous administration.
What a shower.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 13-Sept-25 15:03:48

As a “southerner” I have never really given him a lot of thought as his focus is not unreasonably on his bit of influence.

He seems pretty harmless, but also mediocre tbh. Not leader material.

Galaxy Sat 13-Sept-25 15:02:14

I agree with everyone else, I don't mind him but no.

valdavi Sat 13-Sept-25 14:57:12

Agree with everyone ele, he's influential & effective in his current position. I don't think he's pragmatic enough to be a good PM.

I don’t rate him for PM at all, he’s good at being a big fish in a small pond and let it stay that way.

Agreed!

He likes being ‘King of the North’ but wouldn’t want to see him as leader of LP and/or PM.

Andy Burnham, the Liverpudlian Mayor of Manchester
until 2028 is now being touted
as a contender for Prime Minister and apparently preparing to “throw his hat into the ring”

Is anyone here from the Greater Manchester area and can offer any insight into the office he holds as it seems to be a divisive and contentious post?
