I don't mind the Union Jack being flown from anywhere- I just wish people would hang them the right way up!!

😄
It is a difficult flag to tell the difference tho.

My Mother had to undertake war work in WW2 making flags. She became annoyed at seeing the flag hanging the wrong way, and went into our local Town Hall to tell them how it should be hung. Looking across the top half of the flag, the white stripes should be 'Broad, narrow, narrow broad'.

Thankyou for that clear explanation. Once you see it, you know- but people can't be bothered to observe these things- that's why there are so many England flags- it's easier to get it the right way up!

I would like to see the Union Flag flown on every house, as it is in some American towns and cities.

Just for information - it is only properly called the "Union Jack" when flown on a ship or boat!

Apparently that is a fallacy, historical investigations by the flag institute, think that's what they are called, says it isn't true.

Whatever he said would be wrong wouldn't it.

Thank you - I didn't know that, and I am ever so old!

Can’t see anything wrong in his statement. Pretty much sums up what I feel about the whole subject.

He is an utterly crass man. You deserve better. Get rid of him.

Talk about flags is cheap. Solving real UK problems is expensive.

Wonderful array of flags at the Last Night of the Proms, being waved in joy and celebration, and including the EU ones.

The Mall is not the same as a backstreet though - and gives the flag proper respect.

I assume you are agreeing with my post?

Oreo I know we regularly disagree but think we agree about what he was saying about it. That these are flags inherrntly belong to the UK (in terms of municipal flags, state occasions, our armed forces etc) and use to divide us or take them from us won't be successful.

No rubbish and warped use of them will make them less "ours".

I agree with you both flowers

I am neither 'far left or far right', but must admit it does annoy me when I hear (and there are a few) of our Army veterans who have served in the Falklands conflict and other conflicts who are now homeless, on the streets and have to fight for everything they get. When others who have done nothing for this Country seem to get a lot more.....

I would be delighted to see flags on the town hall.
I confess I hate them in rags on lampposts.

I agree.

One caveat being when you see them flown from lampposts down The Mall and outside the turning circle at `Buckingham Palace, Windsor, Balmoral, Sandringham etc. These are changed and never look tattered and torn.

I see what he means, that he ( government) won’t allow our flags to be taken over by the far right.
What it means in practice is, tho I can’t see him doing anything bar the talk, is to fly our flags from municipal buildings regularly so that they cease to be symbols of groups with questionable credentials.

'Britain will not surrender its flag to those who wish to use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division, Sir Keir Starmer has said.' Copied from the BBC front page. Yes - perhaps he feels he must say something stirring!

MaizieD Sun 14-Sept-25 18:26:03

Has he really said that?

I cannot believe how utterly crass he is being about our flags.

I wonder if whoever advised him to say it thought it sounded Churchillian...😱

LovesBach Sun 14-Sept-25 18:17:07

Am I alone in finding this recent pronouncement by Keir Starmer particularly irritating? What does he envisage - a refusal to have a ceremony of handing the flag over to - the far right, presumably? Who has suggested that the PM make a statement that sounds to me like silly talk. There has been a recent thread about flags on GN which did become quite heated; I am not attempting to fan the flames of that one , simply to say that this is an empty and pointless statement. Thugs do not own the Union Jack or the St. George's flag. They may wave them for all the wrong reasons, but it does not make the flags theirs. Neither will it make any decent person who wants to wave the national flags stop doing so - it doesn't associate that person with the far right.
