Barack and Michelle Obama at Aretha Franklin's awesome tribute to Carole King.

Europe won the Ryder cup ☺️ some poor little US idiot couldn't take it.

foxie48 Tue 30-Sept-25 09:36:59

The wife of anyone in the public eye seems to become public property (not sure it's the same for the husband though). Rory McIlloy's wife had beer thrown on her at the Ryder Cup on Sunday by American fans (thugs) at least Melania doesn't have to put up with that!

Wyllow3 Tue 30-Sept-25 00:41:22

Hang on a bit - she has written a book, an autobiography, she is a public figure in her own right.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8d7k2dnnko

It includes
"Her clothing was the subject of media fascination and controversy, particularly after she was spotted wearing a jacket with the phrase

*I really don’t care, do you?” during a trip to a migrant child detention centre in 2018*"

so every right for comments, tho of course in terms of her not her husband.

I think politicians wives shouldn’t be up for discussion especially if it’s insulting.
They aren’t their husbands or their husbands job.

Yes, you're right.

We don't know her views in the main, although she did stand up for abortion rights publicly.

Melania doesn't care- she is just a silent version of Trump only caring about herself and of course, her son.

Don't make her into a victim of a heroine, she is neither- she supports her husband and everything he stands for.

Allira Mon 29-Sept-25 11:15:53

And I always think Melania is there but reluctantly.
Dutiful. The only time I've seen her relaxed was when she was over here and with the small children.

I was never a fan of the Obamas. Too much razzmatazz, but the Americans seem to like that. Personally, I don't think a President's wife should be so forward. Trumps's wife has the balance right. She is seen at his side, supporting him, but doesn't steal the limelight.

Quiet right 😂 Know your place: barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

I always think that Michelle Obama would make an excellent President.

IMO Michelle Obama became a figure in that Presidency because she was such an impressive communicator and the American people liked her. Plenty of presidential wives have had identities in their own right and why on earth shouldn't they?

This is my answer to what I consider an astonishing statement in 2025 as opposed to maybe 1950?

I adore her, and like many here bought the Tapestry LP immediately.

"AI Overview
Carole King's Tapestry LP was released on February 10, 1971, by Ode Records. It was recorded in January 1971 at A&M studio in Los Angeles and is considered one of the greatest and best-selling albums of all time.

Now that dates us over 70's ☺️

I've got "I'll be your friend" as one of two in my will as maybe played at a funeral , and the other one is from Alison Moyet, whom I like)d) immensely: this was recorded later in her career

Dido's Lament

If I know a poster whom I disagree with has big difficulties at home of sad kinds it does change my response somewhat, it's the right way to be imo? I sort of think that the "personal is political" as human beans.

Not everyone posts about their difficulties, though.

Of course, it's up to them. but if we all revealed a little more at times, we might understand each other as people not just 'opinions".

For example, I have seen for myself people I disagree with very deeply politically post very kindly on other forums and it alters my perception

(To a point - it depends what they are saying politically, if its expressing close to disgust or putting others down or constant cynicism then, well -..)

but if we all revealed a little more at times, we might understand each other as people not just 'opinions".

I like Carole King 🙂

Yes, that's one of the LPs I have 🙂
Actually, it's a very clever thought!

That clip really brightened up my Sunday morning.
I love Carole King and Aretha Franklin!
I saw the musical Beautiful about Carole King's life and it was brilliant.

I still have my Carole King LPs. 🙂

First record I bought, It Might as Well Rain Until September.
Still love it.

I'm sorry to hear about that Wyllow3. It must be difficult.

We can empathise even if we don't all post on here about our problems. Yes, your BIL is surrounded by love.

Wyllow3 Sat 27-Sept-25 21:58:20

Oh Allira yes. it is hard. I'm realistic, and you know I believe of my nearly 2 year deep depression following the appalling year ending of my marriage to a co-ervice and verbally very violent man.

Yet....*life is very , ever, persistent* until no hope is left, and even then, there is the possibility of sharing loss and giving and taking comfort from others.

So even when my glass has been very half empty, there has always been a trickle of hope, as if you let it, love has a way of coming in if one opens ones eyes.

And thank you: BiL is surrounded by love, he looked after his grandchildren when they were little alone a lot of the time, and lives with one of the families - but thats because what he has given?

I find cynicism destructive

Allira Sat 27-Sept-25 20:17:56

Wyllow3

*As for Trump?
This, too, shall pass*

Now that, I like the sound of.

I wasn't and clear enough, and apologise (my BiL has bladder cancer, and its a critical weekend), I intended to say, "love and honour the Obamas"

Glad to say, very very UK, Yorkshire Lass, and its *Wyllow .....I had to add the 3 as I messed up signing in).

Why did I say "Wee bit of sour grapes" I guess this weekend I'm thinking, for heaven's sake, can we have a bit of "glass half full" for a change? The patient is, despite needing dialysis.

🙂
Lost in translation!

I can usually find a glass that is half full but sometimes it's not so easy.
I'm sorry to hear about your BIL.
