.......according to The Chancellor.

And if you believe that then you'll believe anything.

And more global warming. What a disastrous decision.

Do they think we are that gullible!!!

keepingquiet Mon 22-Sept-25 18:54:46

Not for me it won't.

Visgir1 Mon 22-Sept-25 19:18:21

Not a hope.

Cheaper flights or not I think this is a good decision.
I know the environmentalists are going to be up in arms about this, but another runway at Gatwick, and Heathrow too for that matter are long overdue.

Not cheaper holidays, but I do think it’s a good thing to do. Planes will fly regardless and Gatwick is one of the easiest to get to by public transport.

It may stop so much circling to land which is when lots of fumes/particles /nasty compounds are spread in heavy concentration.

escaped Mon 22-Sept-25 19:26:02

I'm not sure about that.
There might be more flights, so more competition, but seeing as most holidays have to be taken during the same period, demand will mean prices won't be cheaper.

I think I read in short haul 40% of fuel burning can be take off and landing.

It's worse if in a "holding pattern" due to air traffic congestion.
The engines are at a higher power setting (for maneuvering), and the aircraft is at a lower, less efficient altitude with flaps extended.

If we can get rid of the wait at busy times that has to be a good thing!

There are two runways at Gatwick at the moment.

Unfortunately due to their close proximity they cannot be used at the same time.

I thought we were all meant to be considering our car in footprint…

Spoiler alert along with the Tooth Fairy Santa Claus and we're all getting our WFAconfusedconfusedconfused

It’s true that there are two runways. One is used for arrivals and take-offs. The second runway is used for manoevering and can be used for landing in an emergency. To have two runways which can both be used for arrivals and departures would make Gatwick a more reliable airport.

Doesn't the new runway involve the 2nd one?

escaped Tue 23-Sept-25 06:48:38

A new Gatwick runway won't entice many from the south West because it isn't very accessible.
I think I've said before, we use KLM from a local airport to Amsterdam, and transfer onward.
But if works for the some of the positive reasons posters have mentioned above, then it's worth a try.
Just stop saying, "holidays will be cheaper" Rachel.

The new runway will follow the line of the current 2nd runway but will be moved about 30 feet away and will be longer.
(I don’t have inside info on this but OH is keen on aeroplanes!)

I am very sorry for the people living under the flightpath.

NotSpaghetti Tue 23-Sept-25 08:46:22

Yes, I thought so. It's not a whole brand new thing.
