Taking tylenol during pregnancy is ‘not good’.says Trump…
(153 Posts)…he couldn’t pronounce acetaminophen. BBC had to pull the plug on his announcement ( can’t remember them having to do that before). Seems to me his news conferences need to be time lapsed and fact checked. Or maybe the news media in this country might consider not showing every press conference, every word he utters…#justsaying
Tylenol is Acetaminophen exactly the same stuff as Paracetamol ( Panadol). Please refer to Whitewavemark2 with her excellent referenced post earlier at 08.40. The trouble is that some people believe the rubbish that Trump spouts. Only this morning I heard 2 young Mums discussing the "danger" of Tylenol!! Fortunately here following Trump's misinformation, The Society of Obstetricians and gynecologists of Canada has stated Tylenol is still safe to use during pregnancy and this has been widely broadcast.
It would be good if he had even a little knowledge, just enough to read and understand the subject he is talking about, when it affects millions of people, would help.
Trump isn't a medic.
As I said, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Many years ago when pregnant my mother who never interfered, said to me,,please don't take any tablet whilst pregnant. It sank in.
I was very ill whilst pregnant and sadly had to take a great many medications. It isn't a competition.
Trump isn't a medic.

We don’t have Tylenol in this country.
It's paracetamol.
We don’t have Tylenol in this country.
Tylenol is cheap, I wonder what pregnant women will be told to take instead, something more expensive???? Watch this space, everything in the US is about the money!

Yes. But I bet Kennedy will come up with a safe alternative.
Well, we're not supposed to take aspirin, anti-inflammatories are not allowed by many GPs and codeine causes constipation!
But at least I'm not pregnant.
Yes. But I bet Kennedy will come up with a safe alternative.

It’ll be interesting to see which pharmaceutical stocks and shares go up and down now. And who might have an interest in the ones that go up.
Interesting thought.
And a case of a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!
Although I think most pharmaceutical firms make paracetamol, it's cheap as chips to coin a phrase.
Actually, much cheaper.

AFAIK, paracetamol only became freely available in the 1950s. The product went on sale in the United States in 1955 under the brand name Tylenol. In 1956, 500 mg tablets of paracetamol went on sale in the UK under the trade name Panadol. In 1963, paracetamol was added to the British Pharmacopoeia.
And yet there is evidence to suggest that many famous names from history were autistic e.g. Einstein, Newton, Michelangelo, Mozart etc. It’s only speculation, of course, based on what is known of their behavioural traits.
I would also say this. We often see threads on here started by elderly women whose husbands have always behaved in a manner which suggests they may have autism. Responses from others are often quick to suggest this.
Their age would preclude a commercial painkiller used by their mothers being responsible for any NDD.
I have a couple of male friends who are pretty sure they have autism but are of an age where they have never been assessed or diagnosed. I’m inclined to agree with them. The very intense focus on niche special interests, socially awkward, very blunt sometimes, a lack of empathy - all the usual traits. Never married. I like them very much most of the time but have learned that I have to work around the way they are.
Also, I would urge people to read Steve Silberman’s excellent book Neurotribes. He makes the point that a very large number of brillliant neurodiverse people working in Silicon Valley also have neurodiverse chidre. Evidence that this is hereditary rather than drug induced.
Of course, there may be more than one reason for NDDs. My own feeling is that the causes as well as hereditary are environmental hence the rise in numbers as well as better diagnosis.
Watch the film Dark Waters (2019) based on the true story of lawyer Rob Bilott's case against chemical company DuPont for polluting waters with PFAS (forever chemicals). The number of DuPont workers and local farmers who contracted cancer was astonishing. PFAS are still widely present in consumer goods.
There is a lot of evidence linking PFAS with NDDs.
Excuse me... Defunding not defending
Anyone who thinks Trump has anything remotely credible to say about autism or adhd is kidding themselves.
He happens to be pushing a supplement to "treat" autism that Dr. Oz (famous quack doctor on TV) is involved with. This is after defending autism research. How convenient!
It's all a grift that plays off of people's fear and ableist tendencies.
It’ll be interesting to see which pharmaceutical stocks and shares go up and down now. And who might have an interest in the ones that go up.
Sadly millions of Trump supporters will hang on Trump’s every word.
As my old mum would say ‘there is one born every minute.,
Trump will do all he can to demean women ! It has gone on throughout history.
Wes Streeting has said quite vehemently " Do not listen to Medical Advise given out by Donald Trump" he also said to check with your medical professional.
I agree he is putting everything back onto the mother with regard to Autism risks.
listen people
.autism has been around long about tylenol
1955 tylenol
autism first named in 1908
in medical books 1911
i am brain damaged but i understand that
I'm sure there will be more research on paracetamol but more concerned about frightening women into not having their babies vaccinated is irresponsible. Vaccines have saved millions of lives over time .

Did anyone read Allira's link and move on to the actual paper?
Did you read the corrections/alterations prior to publication of the paper? Did you notice this is an association
Did you read the end of the paper:
While this association warrants caution, untreated maternal fever and pain pose risks such as neural tube defects and preterm birth, necessitating a balanced approach. We recommend judicious acetaminophen use—lowest effective dose, shortest duration—under medical guidance, tailored to individual risk–benefit assessments, rather than a broad limitation.
Surely this is the point with any drug taken at any time - but especially during pregnancy!
I did read it, and thought it was quite balanced, the key being ‘judicious use’ of the drug. How on earth people can give credence to anything Trump says ( nobody knows more about……( insert anything you like here)… than I do) is beyond me.
Trump also suggested taking ivermectin during the pandemic. It's used to worm horses and it's use is controlled as it can be very dangerous used incorrectly. The man is a complete idiot. He's clearly decided he won't get the Nobel prize for peace so has decided to try for the one for medicine! This latest shambolic announcement also keeps the focus on his relationship with Epstein, so he'll like that.
Another stick to beat women with...

Aside from arguments on either side... when I was expecting both sons in the 70's my instincts told me not to take any type of medication, drug, or alcohol during pregnancy, and not to smoke. Seemed a small sacrifice in the circumstances. I was lucky to be able to keep to to it. And just made sure to eat good food.
So I just made the decision purely on instinct, as did most of my peer group then. The people I knew anyway.
I didn’t know I was pregnant with my first until I was 5 months, so carried on as usual, no issues.
