Wow!

Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to illegally finance his 2007 presidential campaign using funds from Muammar Gaddafi, the late Libyan dictator

The French certainly don’t hold back when dealing with (former) heads of State - pun intended- whether Louis XIV or Nicolas Sarkozy involved in dodgy dealing.

Perhaps we could take a feuille out of leur livre ….. hmm

Not that I follow what happens in France much.

Is it a suspended sentence or a jail time?

Ashcombe Thu 25-Sept-25 15:44:40

It will involve some time in prison, accordng to the BBC:-

I love the way they allowed him to walk out of court, hand in hand with a cheeky Carla who pulled the microphone cover and threw it on the floor. No being led out by the gendarmes.
Typically French!

We're still letting Johnson get away with it.

Don't get me started on the PO scandal...

What about Prince Andrew...?

Our society is riddled with it.

I bet he's already negotiating a book deal with publishers about his prison experiences.......

RosieandherMaw Thu 25-Sept-25 18:58:39

Of course XVI -oops! blush

Allira Thu 25-Sept-25 19:47:06

Presumably he's free until his appeal is decided?

Why did he not go straight to prison from court?

escaped Thu 25-Sept-25 20:19:03

Because its a "mandat de depôt différé" which means it is deferred or postponed. So imprisonment will take effect at a later date. I think he has to be summoned in less than one month to be given the date his imprisonment will start. His appearance is fixed for 13th October, so he has a couple of weeks to enjoy the good life before then! 🍷 🥂

Allira Thu 25-Sept-25 22:20:56

It seems strange but I suppose he won't scarper!

escaped Thu 25-Sept-25 23:09:46

True, he's already been used to wearing an electronic tag.

Oh!! 😲

Better late than never!

Very surprised, here he would have so many appeals he wouldn't serve a day.Funded by the tax payer of course.

I don't think Prince Andrew or Boris Johnson are suspected of taking funds from Colonel Gaddafi - is that the difference between how they're treated & how Sarkosy has been convicted?

keepingquiet Sun 28-Sept-25 17:13:36

Yes, if it's just about the money...

Do they still have the guillotine in France? A proper punishment for this dodgy chancer.

I don't understand what they are getting away with; have I missed something? What is Boris Johnson doing that is illegal, and Prince Andrew, however distasteful he may seem as a person, hasn't been charged with anything.

keepingquiet Sun 28-Sept-25 22:38:35

Prince Andrew- no because the Queen paid Guiffre off, remember? It was an out of court settlement that got him off the hook.

As for Johnson and his tragic mismanagement of the Covid crisis- the public enquiry has yet to conclude its findings...

He gets locked up today. Apparently Carla will visit him on a daily basis.
I'm guessing he won't be given slop to eat, and that his room will be pretty comfy.

Yes. Went in waving to supporters apparently.
