A car was set alight outside a Mosque in Peacehaven after people were seen trying unsuccessfully to enter the Mosque as it was locked. Only the front of the Mosque was damaged and no people were hurt.

It gets worse! I am horrified to read about instances like this. The fact that some people are prepared to cause harm to others, for whatever reason, fills me with disgust and fear.

Drunks, morons, teenagers? Possibly all three? Good to know no injuries and the mosque was locked. We live in difficult times.

Or maybe people who hate Muslims? Who knows?

So sad to hear this. Hope they catch them soon.

I just hope, hope, hope it is not linked in any way shape or form to that vile attack in Manchester.
If it is, then we are in danger of regressing back to the tit for tat horrors of Northern Ireland.
Good luck to the security services in catching those guilty.

It's utterly horrific.

It's not the same as Northern Ireland. This isn't Jews vs. Muslims. The mosque arsonists are more likely to have been white nationalists, who couldn't care less about Jews. Nevertheless, the synagogue attack won't have escaped their notice, so they probably just wanted to cause as much chaos as possible. There were two people in the building, who thankfully escaped.

This is really depressing news.

I hope this doesn't all start to escalate.

'Peacehaven'

The irony.

I think my description of moron covers all bases.

All this hatred. Coming so soon after the horrific attack in Manchester does give pause for thought but shouldn't speculate.
I just hope no more synagogues or mosques are attacked.

No sunami. Never crossed my mind that it would be people of Jewish faith involve in this.
The attack in Manchester appears to be racist, against Jews, by a person of Islamic faith.
This attack on the mosque could simply be vandalism, and so I hope it isn't another version of racism.
Time will tell.

Maremia Sun 05-Oct-25 13:41:30

I imagine after Manchester, the Police will prioritise this above the 'vandalism', from which lots of citizens endure already.

It could just be mindless vandalism, but I have a feeling that the building targeted wasn't random. It could have been inspired by the recent protests including the Tommy Robinson one or the smaller ones outside immigrant hotels. Unless the arsonists are found, I don't suppose anybody will know, but it's possible.

The reason I said that it wasn't like N Ireland was because NI involved two opposing feuding factions. This is different. As far as I know, British Jews haven't done anything. They are scapegoats for what is happening in Gaza and other places in the Middle East. Most Muslims haven't done anything either, but they've become scapegoats for those who have and that hatred is fuelled by the the third group. White nationalists target Muslims and, sometimes, Jews. White nationalists make up a small but vocal subsection of the UK population. It's more complicated than two opposing factions.

Good post, sunami

We live in very scary times.

There was an attack on the mosque in Taunton two or three weeks ago, don't think it got much publicity. Police described as racist or religiously aggravated criminal damage. Last I heard one man had been arrested but not sure if the 2nd one has been caught.

Maremia Sun 05-Oct-25 16:52:26

According to the Metro, doorbell footage shows men pouring petrol on the mosque doors then over a car, while two people were still inside the building.
Police are treating it as a 'hate 'crime.

Terrible.

Doodledog Sun 05-Oct-25 17:37:40

Any attack on any group of people is equally deplorable.

I remember going on an educational tour of local places of worship more than 30 years ago, and both the mosque and synagogue had very visible security. It was shocking then as it is now, but it is not a new thing. What sticks in my mind is that the mosque had a red telephone connected to the police station, and an elderly man sat next to it all day in case there was a need to call for help.

Heeding a Poster on a similar thread, that we should fact check, I looked for an update on this attack.
Didn't understand the contrasting details online, and then the penny dropped. It was another previous attack that was being described. Turns out there have been so many recent attacks on mosques. So many.
