Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

Palestinians from the West Bank- ?? Included in these figures? Hamas?

Yes West Bank criminals should be counted as well as those from Gaza.

So, are standards of international decency allowed to drop with the excuse of war? Maybe they do for you.

Families of the the deceased hostages who haven't been returned have called for a suspension of the ceasefire. Israel's defence minister has said that Hamas has failed to meet it's commitments.
This is worrying news. Many bodies are still buried under the rubble. Hamas has said it will take time to locate the other bodies.
I hope this won't be an excuse to carry on fighting.

Hamas don’t know where the bodies are. On 7/10/2023 several terrorist gangs were involved in the kidnappings/ rapes / killings of the Israel citizens.

A country at permanent war is the difference.

Included in those who have been detained by Israel without charge or trial, often for years, are also women and children.

The UK has a prison population of about 100,000. So 10,000 prisoners in a war zone doesn’t seem excessive.

Do the maths. Population of Gaza 2.1 million. Population of UK 69.6 million.

Of course you can get arrested and detained for nothing Oreo, it all depends which country is responsible for the arrest and detention.

WW is correct, 1700 of the Palestinians released had been detained but never gone to trial.

You may have no compassion for those held without trial in Israeli prisons who may have been tortured, but some of us do.

Google, AI, and all the sources they use, will give you those numbers AnnieB, should you chose to look.

Anniebach Tue 14-Oct-25 11:19:15

Who has given the number of Palestinians in Israeli jails ?

Maremia Tue 14-Oct-25 11:19:11

How many does it have to be ronib, before it is deemed to be an injustice?

ronib Tue 14-Oct-25 11:12:18

Exactly how many? Wwm2

Whitewavemark2 Tue 14-Oct-25 11:01:50

There are 10000 Palestinians still in Israeli jails. Many being held with no trial, being tortured and starved.

This has to stop.

Israel simply can’t thrive if it doesn’t fall in line with the accepted rules on torture. I so want the region including Israel to thrive but Peace can never be guaranteed in this sort of atmosphere - the oppressed will never forgive.

Israel does have a proper legal structure. It’s not a primitive society.

Not forgetting that members of the Israeli government have been convicted of crimes.

Which of the present ones and which crimes please?

You could say the same of many politicians from many countries, including the UK.

ronib Tue 14-Oct-25 10:55:21

Trumped up crimes or real ones? AGAA4

Just one? There were over a thousand arrested.

ronib Tue 14-Oct-25 10:40:29

I read of one Palestinian with 13 life sentences who will be deported from Israel/Gaza/Palestine.
No one is handed 13 life sentences without a trial.

Maremia Tue 14-Oct-25 10:33:46

We don't know if they have been arrested for 'nothing' if there has not been a fair trial.

Maremia Tue 14-Oct-25 10:29:02

We will place our compassion wherever it is due.

Maremia Tue 14-Oct-25 10:28:21

Everyone arrested and detained is entitled to
humane treatment during detention,
a fair trial.
Criminality simply cannot be assumed, it must be proven.
Were all of the released Palestinians treated humanely during their incarceration?

Oreo Tue 14-Oct-25 10:17:48

Instead of any misplaced compassion for released criminals it would be better to look forward now and just hope that Gaza doesn’t collapse into gangsters versus terrorists.

Oreo Tue 14-Oct-25 10:13:05

Palestine Action supporters did do something wrong as you must surely know. They showed support for a proscribed terror action group. The police had no option but to detain them as many refused to give their details. The ones that did give their details were not detained.
