Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

I agree with you Oreo that there should have been a peacekeeping force in Gaza to stop the gang wars with Hamas. That fighting could go on interminably if there is no law enforcement.

Soldiers don’t just scoop up kids walking around in the West Bank. They’ve all committed offences.

Oreo how do you know this? It's impossible to know who these children are and that they are violent.

It’s been reported many times years before 7th September two years ago.

You don’t get arrested and detained for nothing you know.

...and there was me thinking that even my own country (ie Britain) does indeed detain people for "nothing".

Maybe my memory deceives me re Pal**tine Action supporters have been arrested by the police - just for demonstrating (ie doing nothing wrong).

If only - re people never ever being arrested and detained for nothing. Oh - that's not to mention that even in my own country police are turning up on peoples doorsteps unexpectedly currently because they've used "hurty words" that are not currently fashionable about something.

Oh dear dear dear...

Over 20,000 children are estimated to have been killed, and over 60% of the victims were women and children, according to Reuters analysis.

They’re the ones to reserve sympathy for in Gaza.

If the peace holds then Israelis can get back to relative normality, but I fear that normality for the Palestinians is years away.

I hope that aid, and funding pours in to start the re-building. Hospitals and schools in particular.

The Arab countries will be doing the rebuilding once the areas are declared safe.
Aid is already pouring in.
The really important thing is getting some robust ‘law’ in there.

Some of the Palestinian hostages were children Oreo and many had been imprisoned without trial.

Not kids, youths who have attacked people or the IDF not little innocent kids playing marbles.More likely to put your eye out with a marble in a slingshot.

cariad 1700 of released Palestinians are hostages, they are not criminals they have never been tried in a court of law - tortured? Yes, but not tried.

Hostages! 😂

Compassion only for innocent individuals not the guilty. So compassion for the hostages alive and dead, and for the over a thousand Israelis murdered on 7th October and compassion for all innocent Palestinian lives lost in this conflict.
Zero compassion for hamas and their thousands of supporters and for those Palestinians released from prison.

Oreo - I look forward to the clear objective proof - from someone other than that government that the people in prison there are "criminals". List of offences done/dates/etc...all the evidence - so that any country in the world can see clearly what's what and not just biased countries. Pure objective stuff please - with particular reference to what the children that have been kept in prison have done that makes them a criminal.

We're not going to believe someone is a criminal just because Netanyahu says they are....he's not exactly objective (as most of us know).

Oreo this isn’t a competition, innocent people from both sides were killed, and they all deserve our compassion. This thread is about achieving peace, not blame.

What!
You equate criminals in prisons to innocent hostages? I’ve heard it all now.🤬

CariadAgain Tue 14-Oct-25 09:48:48

I wonder how we can ever make progress - when some people are insistent on blocking their ears/eyes/brains from thinking about what "the other side" has done - just because it's "their own side" and even name-calling personally (very naughty/very very naughty....but it does serve the purpose of showing them up clearly - when they name-call...but you don't stoop that low).

Much respect to the Jewish academic in an English university up there on YouTube taking a very clear look at what's what and "telling it like it is - and not biased towards the Jewish side just because he is a Jew. Nope - he was analysing the facts quite carefully and clearly. Respect to him for that - and he certainly didn't do any name-calling or trying to say that evidence didn't exist. Nope - just factual objective - now that I can respect.

Oreo do you believe the Israeli hostages were "allegedly tortured*?

With hamas? You must be joking. The hostages will report exactly what happened to them, earlier hostages already have done.

Criminals Oreo?

Yes criminals in prisons. Some serving very long sentences.

I was pleased to see that Israeli hostages seemed to be reasonably well. The Palestinians hostages, some of them children, didn't fare as well.

It’s reported that the hostages have begun to tell their stories of being starved and torture. The last ones to be released a while ago said that hamas suddenly began feeding them well as they were due to be released, they still looked gaunt though.

Maremia Tue 14-Oct-25 09:41:48

Maremia Tue 14-Oct-25 09:40:34

Torture can be alleged. Inuries will be examined and assessed.Denial does not enhance progress.

Yep....just checked.

Jordan is part of what Netanyahu wants for Greater Israel.

It would comprise:
- Jordan, some parts of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, most of Syria, a bit of Turkey and Western Iraq - as well as Jordan.

The logic behind it would be the same as is quoted for having most of Palestine .....

I don’t know what you’re on but I’d stop taking it.
That assumption is bonkers/ bizarre/ paranoid.

Stop name-calling right now. I don't call people on the other side pejorative names.

That is not nice and not right.
