Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

If it’s a suspension WWmk2 will be back. Two weeks is usually enough penance but occasionally four weeks ‘to reflect on the spirit of posting etc’.

If it’s a ban? 🤷‍♀️
Email to GNHQ and appeal. Ask them to reconsider?

Other times posters occasionally find a way back in by changing their details. However very often a style of posting is recognised …

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 18:58:08

Banned? Who would wish for that? Is there a way to come back from that decision? Anyone know?

Well, to bring the thread full circle, I for one eagerly and optimistically await the outcome of the voting - we should know very soon - and I wish nothing more than a peace settlement that stops any more hurt for any more people - whatever their faith, their race, their colour.

Too much pain and suffering, too many deaths. Let it end and let people rebuild their lives as well as they can.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I am also very sorry to lose WWM2. There seems to be an increase in posters being banned lately, it's quite worrying as I haven't seen her post anything that I thought would get her banned. If anyone is in touch with her, please let her know that she will be missed, certainly by me. I think it's a real shame to lose posters who take the time to construct really interesting posts even if you don't necessarily agree with them.

Allsorts Thu 09-Oct-25 18:32:49

I wish this was the end of hostilities, somehow I doubt it,

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 09-Oct-25 18:19:08

Nooo! Why?
Don’t answer I don’t want to gossip.

To quote McEnroe “you cannot be serious!”

I shall miss her contributions. I believed her when she said she was going on holiday.

Oh hang on … maybe she was (is) as one doesn’t get any warning prior to a suspension or ban. One finds out when one cannot log in. You think. 🤔 what’s gone wrong.

Then lying in your email inbox is a message from GNHQ telling you and explaining why.

I knew that I was right CariadAgain and that you can’t even bring yourself to say the country is called Israel and the citizens are called Israelis.
Tells me all I need to know.
Nobody has called it Palestine on this forum other than you.

Perhaps no-one else is strong enough to stand up to you...

Laughable.
Nobody else on here would say or think that Israel shouldn’t exist or that Israeli citizens should be called something else.
Just you.
What most people would like is a two state solution.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-Oct-25 18:14:16

That’s a shame, a big loss for GN.

I hope she will appeal the decision and just get a suspension 🤞

MayBee70 Thu 09-Oct-25 18:04:53

Yes. She has been banned sad.

Babs03 Thu 09-Oct-25 17:58:44

There is no pot stirring, WWM is not on holiday she has been banned.
Just to set the record straight, am in no way interested in what people read into this but it is the truth of the matter.
Make of it what you will.

Antisemitism hasn’t gone away, I doubt if it ever will

How right you are GG.

And many of those hiding in plain sight think their guarded comments are clever and that they go unnoticed. hmm

What here on this forum or in life?

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 17:38:58

General consensus from multi sources online, first phase is holding.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 17:37:01

Lyse Doucet is in Jerusalem, I think, just now. She will keep us informed.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 09-Oct-25 17:35:10

This is a phenomenal achievement by Trump. I’d love more information, but for now we can but hope that the remaining hostages are going home. 🇮🇱

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 17:22:12

Looked it up,
Obama was awarded the Peace Prize for 'his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples.'
They cited his 'promotion of nuclear non-proliferation, and a new climate especially in reaching out to the Muslim world'

windmill1 Thu 09-Oct-25 17:21:55

And if Trump lands the Peace Prize and fighting breaks out yet again in this constantly troubled part of the world then will Mr Trump have to give the prize back?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 09-Oct-25 17:14:52

ronib

If I remember correctly, wasn’t Whitewavemark going on holiday?

She did say that only two days ago.
Stop pot stirring some of you!

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 17:12:59

It's just that the Peace Prize winner has already been chosen, and I think the nominations closed in January. This could work for peace in Gaza and hostage returns, because, to earn a nomination for Trump, it will have to still be on-going this coming January.
Yes, I heard about the opposition from some in the Israeli Parliament, but not yet couched as a threat to collapse Netanyahu's government.

Yes, missing Whitewave's researched posts. If you are in touch please say 'Hi'.

Am afraid she can’t, and for that reason am still off GN most of the time. And tbh threads like this consistently get derailed by those simply wanting to push their own agenda, with a merry bunch of fellow saboteurs. So, will only pop up occasionally in order to say that the person or people responsible for seeing off long term posters know who they are and what they have done.
Anyway that’s all for now.
And am respecting what you say Maremia.
Keep on keeping on.

👍

A realistic Trump would accept he can only be up for next years peace prize, not this year's - far too much up in the air.

Wyllow3 Thu 09-Oct-25 16:33:26

Well, where do matters stand? This quote from the BBC, but could have come from all the major news outlets.

"It is a major moment in this most grievous Gaza war. Most of all, it is a human moment.

The first sparks tell this story: the dancing in the dark in Tel Aviv's Hostages Square, the eruption of joy in the dead of night in the ruined streets of Gaza

But even now some details, including the names of the Palestinian detainees to be freed, are being argued over. And there's strident opposition to this agreement inside Israel's cabinet.

It is a ceasefire, not a peace deal

The toughest of issues are still on the table.

Will Hamas agree to give up its guns? Will Israel eventually pull its troops out of Gaza?

What about the vague "political horizon" mentioned in US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan, which much of the world translates as the establishment of a Palestinian state and which Israel's government still firmly rejects

And, more immediately, will both sides implement their side of this agreement?

Those are issues for tomorrow.

But, so far, so good, my heart is lifted, as many other hearts surely must be.

AGAA4 Thu 09-Oct-25 16:11:50

I think there may be a ceasefire tonight as the first phase is beginning.
There is a long and tortuous way to go before the peace deal is fully agreed by all.

Aely Thu 09-Oct-25 15:51:23

First I will mention that I have not read all the messages, apart from Page 1, at the moment, so this may have been brought up already.

I am all for a cessation of the slaughter. However, as soon as I heard the words "Stage One is the return of all hostages and release of (many) Palestinians held in Israeli Jails..." I thought Here we go again. The previous Ceasefire was in stages. Stage one was completed, but on the flimsiest of excuses Israel refused the initiation of Stage 2 and the slaughter of the Innocents resumed, first by bombardment and then by starvation.

I very much fear the same will happen again, Netenyahu has too much to lose in stopping the now one-sided war.

Trump wants the Peace Prize. He wants signatures to the plan before tomorrow afternoon when the winner is decided. If he gets the Nobel Peace Prize and then, later, fighting resumes, does anybody really think he will give a hoot? I really hope I am misjudging him but...

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 15:46:06

May this deal last longer than the one at the beginning of the year, and that supplies get in to Gaza, and more of the Hostages return.
Nobel prize winner will be announced tomorrow.
