China today’s news
(77 Posts)Baffled, about all this china spying malarkey in the news and yet…….. they (U.K.) let them buy premium ex royal mint building in London. So, what is more important China Spying or getting money of them for a massive building in London. And, let’s face it, that’s not all they own in UK. In fact, when you think about it, anybody including China, Russia any enemy at all you can think of, if they have the money, a blind eye is turned. So really there are no enemies or spies we need to worry about as our government lets them buy what they want, as long as they have the money everything is for sale to anybody. Thank you Mrs Thatcher.

Why does it have to be a current leader?
Badenoch?
Farage?
I dont expect Starmer to be in power for more than 2 years.
Not convinced he will still be there this time next year.
Then another Labour person will take over. And then maybe another.
I may as well say it, as I did on another thread.
Starmer is looking more and more like a traitor to the Uk to me.
So yes, I do think there are better people to do the job.
Loads of them. Why do assume the Labour Party will be playing party leader musical chairs just because the Conservatives Party started it in the latter part of their being in power? It isn’t a normal part of British politics.
In my opinion]assuming I am understanding your post correctly, which I may not be], when there is a time of instability[and i think we are in that now and have been for a while] there is a fairly constant turnover of leaders.
I see no reason whatsoever to think that that wont be the case going forward for the Uk, for quite some time.
But doesn’t that usually happen when the Conservatives are in power ( although I must admit that they’ve been in power a lot more times than Labour have)?
I dont know.
Maybe they have been in power more often when things have been unstable? [ grin].
Which could be taken either of two ways I guess.
I hope the Chinese Embassy doesn't get the go ahead. Our security could be severely threatened.
Apparently on the plans submitted there are some blacked out rooms. When the government asked why the Chinese said they didn't have to explain.
It could be easy for them to set up a spy network there being so close to important institutions in London.

We , little people don't know the half of it, or even a quarter.
Of course there are those who consider themselves experts.

You are right there. One thing that worries me is how much political complicity has gone before, how much is still going on, and how many of the biggest names in UK politics MI5 have in their sights. Nathan Gill is highly unlikely to be the only one.

Mrs Thatcher left the House of Commons in 1992.
She died in 2013.
I don't think she is in charge from beyond the grave.
It is 35 years since she was Prime Minister - plenty of time to change laws, surely?
We have had 14 years of Labour Governments since 1997 too
How odd to still hark back to Mrs Thatcher.
There would seem to be no point in voting at all if nothing ever changes.
Hear, hear! Even the current government is only trying to blame the last government of a couple of years ago, not one of over 30 years ago.

Thatcher's policies are still affecting the country. The "everything" is for sale was a Thatcherite policy and the last government were all raised on these. This was her legacy.
One of the issues about the building, is that it is very close to 'sensitive' premises.
The Chinese are skilled in technology and one of the concerns is that they could be able to intercept security messages.
Doesn't matter if a country is an enemy or an ally, security is important.
I don't think it's odd or irrelevant to revert to Thatcher. It was she who initiated selling off UK assets to foreign companies and countries. Does anyone remember MacMillan complaining about her 'selling off the family silver'?
She was only interested in getting rid of 'the state' as far as she possibly could. Which not only included selling off state enterprises but also refusing to offer state support to struggling industries because she wanted private enterprises to take them on. She wasn't bothered about foreign purchasers, anyone would do so long as the state didn't have to put its hands in its pocket.
Since Thatcher it has been a free for all for any foreign interest to purchase UK assets. Which makes the UK vulnerable in many ways.
There has been enough time for changes in policy!

Well, they haven't changed, have they? The grip of Thatcherism is still strong on this country.

I have learnt my lesson.
I think that data protection thing deleted all sorts.
In future, I shall act quicker with things which come up on the internet that i find interesting.

Precisely!
Successive Governments have failed or lacked the will to change the laws because, in fact, it suited them.

Certainly the Neo Liberal economic policies are still being pursued, but that is not the problem, we have been borrowing to pay for social improvement not to increase growth. Buying votes has been more important that promoting economic expansion.
Now the UK has a high level of borrowing which restricts the options and taxes are going to have to increase. Starmer and Reeves both know the UK has to work harder to increase growth, their MPs just want more giveaways, unless Starmer gets control of his own party he won’t last long
Starmer probably sees China as a blueprint for how he would wish the UK to be. Anyone who disagrees with the government is locked up or worse and they share his communistic philosophy- Starmer heaven.
Nsnna8 stick to life in Australia ! You really have no idea about the UK any more and stop the Starmer bashing all the time! You don’t even know the man!
You comment on his vision is totally unacceptable in my opinion ! He has hit the ground running for the past 15 months and all you do is criticise from your sun shine heavenly bubble ! Please change your tune and look at your own back yard as Australia also has issues !

No, I don’t like seeing my country of birth going down the tubes because of that man. I can’t stand our politicians here, either but they are slightly better. I quite like Badenoch and I am reasonably certain I know just as much or more about your politics than you do. For various reasons which shall remain between myself and my contacts. So stick that in the pipe etc …
