Baffled, about all this china spying malarkey in the news and yet…….. they (U.K.) let them buy premium ex royal mint building in London. So, what is more important China Spying or getting money of them for a massive building in London. And, let’s face it, that’s not all they own in UK. In fact, when you think about it, anybody including China, Russia any enemy at all you can think of, if they have the money, a blind eye is turned. So really there are no enemies or spies we need to worry about as our government lets them buy what they want, as long as they have the money everything is for sale to anybody. Thank you Mrs Thatcher.

Up to you fancythat, no doubt of your tacit agreement.

Maybe Starmer is keeping his friends close and his enemies closer as the saying goes.

I really hope so 🤞

Why does it have to be a current leader?

Badenoch?
Farage?

I dont expect Starmer to be in power for more than 2 years.
Not convinced he will still be there this time next year.
Then another Labour person will take over. And then maybe another.

I may as well say it, as I did on another thread.
Starmer is looking more and more like a traitor to the Uk to me.

So yes, I do think there are better people to do the job.
Loads of them.

Why do assume the Labour Party will be playing party leader musical chairs just because the Conservatives Party started it in the latter part of their being in power? It isn’t a normal part of British politics.

In my opinion]assuming I am understanding your post correctly, which I may not be], when there is a time of instability[and i think we are in that now and have been for a while] there is a fairly constant turnover of leaders.

I see no reason whatsoever to think that that wont be the case going forward for the Uk, for quite some time.

the french bit, thought i heard it from his own mouth

the ch inese bit - looked it up after i wrote it.
he could be accused of that by others, so it may not have come out of his mouth?

and now i cant even find that

seems to be some stuff comes up on computer, and then data protection has it removed?

OK , that seems a reputable source, I don't think.

The UK has been under threat from foreign powers for some time. Our intelligence services are hard pressed to keep up and have spoken about the danger before now.

Quite.
Glad they do.

Obviously we are where we are. If there was an election called tomorrow, it would be in 6 weeks time, and the choice would be between the current leaders fancythat. I’m not interested in the ifs buts and maybes of the future. Who of the current leaders do you want to nominate as more competent to carry out this particular role?

With respect Casdon, to you and others actually, on this thread or any other, I am not in the habit of repeating myself.

Pointless.
Waste of my time and anyone else's.

As I said on another thread, Starmer said "we mustnt upset the french"
and now we have, the chinese must not be upset.

Hmm.
He wants to be friends with everyone? Hmm.

Where and when did he say this please?

Allira Thu 16-Oct-25 19:43:05

Anybody! Why should any of us worry. Obviously, nobody cares.

Yes we do.

But citing Mrs Thatcher as the culprit for this latest worry was a distraction and not necessary.

I suppose I’m thinking back to a time when everything became for Sale in the Uk under the era of Mrs T that’s when the big changes happened in the UK.

If someone, could explain to me why you are allowed to purchase, buy, build anything in the UK. I don’t understand I really don’t. Anyone, friend or foe (until the flags started going up) can move here, set up business, buy/ build huge blocks of flats, or buildings no questions asked, and then you read headlines about “ Chinese spies in UK” eh. Or is it the same in every country. Anybody! Why should any of us worry. Obviously, nobody cares.

Casdon Thu 16-Oct-25 19:22:19

Is there a current leader in the UK who you believe would do a better job specifically with regard to foreign threats and diplomacy fancythat?

fancythat Thu 16-Oct-25 19:18:51

I’ve just read the Head of MI5 address today, and the threats facing the country on a weekly basis are terrifying,

They are.
So let's hope he is rising to it.
Certainly is not coming across as that.

Casdon Thu 16-Oct-25 19:05:23

That’s diplomacy for you GrannyGravy13.

I’ve just read the Head of MI5 address today, and the threats facing the country on a weekly basis are terrifying, any PM is walking a tightrope with other key nations constantly.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0ex172rxwzo
Say what you will about Starmer, but the threat to our national security is the biggest monkey on his shoulders, and there is no other leader in the UK currently who would have the capability rise to this challenge.

fancythat Thu 16-Oct-25 18:58:20

There is a word for that.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 16-Oct-25 18:54:23

I get the feeling that our PM wants to be friendly with everyone apart from the British electorate.

Allira Thu 16-Oct-25 18:53:46

Casdon

The decision about whether to approve the application for a mega embassy has been delayed again. The site was purchased in 2018, and the plans were originally submitted to Tower Hamlets in 2022, so this is not an issue of the current government’s making.

And certainly not one of Mrs Thatcher's Government.

Not that I am defending her but that is just a ludicrous red herring in what might have been an interesting thread.

Mrs Thatcher left the House of Commons in 1992.
She died in 2013.
I don't think she is in charge from beyond the grave.

It is 35 years since she was Prime Minister - plenty of time to change laws, surely?
We have had 14 years of Labour Governments since 1997 too

How odd to still hark back to Mrs Thatcher.

There would seem to be no point in voting at all if nothing ever changes.
