Maccabi Tel Aviv football club banned

Aston Villa have banned the fans from Tel Aviv from attending the game. They say that after the violence in Amsterdam when the Jewish club was there that they don't feel they can provide the level of security needed to keep fans and nearby residents safe.
There have been clashes in Norway and Italy when Israel compete.
Aston Villa say it is not antisemitism but just being safety conscious.
Maybe another way could have been found without the ban?

Conflation is just one of those things that crops up on so many threads.

UK resident supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv should be able to attend the match if foreign ones are not to be allowed. I'm sure there must be lots of people happy to go along and support the team in solidarity with their Jewish friends and family. It's quite horrifying how many people have no problem with a blanket ban of supporters purely because they're Jewish.

They're not being banned because they're Jewish. I don't know how many times it's been stated on GN that being Israeli (or even a fan of an Israeli team) is not to be conflated with being Jewish. I don't see why Jewish people in the UK (or anywhere) should be fans of an Israeli football club.

Why?
My DS supports a Spanish team but we're not Spanish. ⚽️

growstuff fans support teams for various reasons.

Manchester United is the biggest supported team in Asia followed by Liverpool.

I know. What's that got to do with anything?

Liverpool also has Norwegian fans.

People are conflating Israelis and Jews - that's the issue.

If any of my family were going to that match I would tell them to keep away. Unless the police can spirit the Tel Aviv supporters away quickly after the match and onto buses then I dread what will happen.

It might be an idea!

A source of shame, though.
That Jewish visitors to this country might need protection.

That is what Rob Rinder was saying on breakfast news this morning.

It is a mark of shame that the U.K. cannot protect Jewish visitors here.

I didn't see that but I agree with him.

My father, who enjoyed football and who fought against Nazi Germany and also my father-in-law, who died doing that too, would be ashamed.

Why? I bet your father didn't fight for Israelis.

Israelis should not be conflated with Jews.

My father also fought against Nazi Germany. He was an RAF pilot and flew aid into Palestine after WW2, so was well aware of the fragile situation. While he was there in 1947, a cousin of his, who was in the military police, was murdered by Zionist terrorists.

Sorry, but WW2 has nothing to do with the reason that the decision was taken to ban the Maccabi fans.

Oh, thank goodness!

Yes, sorry, flippant off the cuff remark.
Hope everyone stays safe, good luck to those whose job it is to ensure this

Good luck to your young nephews Kate, and to all others going to this match.
Hope it stays safe for the local residents as well.

It is Allira. It makes me despair about some of the people in this country.

AGAA4 going by the threats online which are coming from Birmingham residents including an Imam, if I was Jewish it’s the last place I would go.

I only hope that the police and CPS are as vigilant in prosecuting them as we saw with those threats after Southport.

If not then the UK really is a two tier policing society.

There is a Jewish Aston Villa Supporters association.

Time we brought back the water cannons or used tear gas as the French do.

For what?

British Muslims called the video "abhorrent," made clear that he "doesn't represent Islam's values," and accused Rashid of incitement

When Aston Villa were in the Champions League last season, one of their opponent's fans were banned from the match at Villa Park as they had caused trouble at another match in Europe. This ban received little to no publicity at the time.

However, we now have outrage about a team from Israel not being able to bring their supporters. Surely, each club's supporters should be evaluated on their previous behaviour at matches, wherever they come from?

AGAA4 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:30:31

People don't seem to understand that however many police are there if things turn violent people can be hurt. It worries me now that because of all the publicity people from all over the country could turn up to cause a riot.

Just 1,000?

Goodness, I thought we were expecting an influx of about 20,000!

There have been tens of thousands of people attending all the protests and they were policed somehow.

I don’t think it’s the 1000 Israeli supporters that they are worried about.

Probably you're right.

If so, as a nation we should be ashamed that supporters of a rival sporting team would not be safe in one of the major cities in our country.
