Maccabi Tel Aviv football club banned

Aston Villa have banned the fans from Tel Aviv from attending the game. They say that after the violence in Amsterdam when the Jewish club was there that they don't feel they can provide the level of security needed to keep fans and nearby residents safe.
There have been clashes in Norway and Italy when Israel compete.
Aston Villa say it is not antisemitism but just being safety conscious.
Maybe another way could have been found without the ban?

Has anyone yet read up about what happened in Norway and Italy.

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 12:53:50

Think I used the word 'particular' meaning the ones that are already known to the police, and as you have read the whole thread, you will remember that I suggested banning the those 'particular' fans who have already caused trouble in Holland, Norway and Italy.
I do believe that 'particular' England fans have been named and banned in this way.
So, the word is 'particular' and not 'all'.
Hope this helps

This won't be the usual antipathy between clubs but enhanced because there is a general hatred of Israel by some people.
The violence could be a lot worse as happened in Amsterdam.

Perhaps the game should be held in camera and all fans banned. That doesn’t not, however, protect the safety of the visiting players from the visiting team who are now very worried. If Aston Villa and the police cannot guarantee safety the game should be played elsewhere.

What is this country coming to? Next thing is Tottenham fans won’t be allowed to go to Aston Villa either. Although thos games come under the jurisdiction of the England FA and Aston Villa would be charged as a Club and possibly banned from several games. This game is under the jurisdiction of UEFA and that body should be taking a stand. Will it though?

You do all realise that these particular football 'fans' have form?

What all of them? You know that for a fact?

Rosie, all and every racist thugs should be dealt with. No matter what side they say they are on.
How do you feel about potentially aggressive football thugs bring their atrocious behaviour over here, and doing more than chanting?

Well there is usually a section of potentially aggressive football thugs in every visiting team's followers, and we deal with it not by banning all away supporters. When the objection to the fans is based on wholesale antisemitism then that is unforgivable.

It is as well to remember that all English football teams were banned from European competition for 5 years following the awful behaviour of Liverpool fans at Heysel. That too punished the innocent along with the guilty and drew much resentment from other clubs and fans.

I'm not good at links but it's on the Daily Mail online. He preaches hate and people like him are probably what Villa are worried about.

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 12:21:07

Well then, it will probably be reversed.

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 12:20:14

I think that preacher has to be investigated. Where can we research this, Kate?

Galaxy Fri 17-Oct-25 12:19:14

The PM, the police commissioner and now the UEFA have all said it is not the right decision.

ronib Fri 17-Oct-25 12:19:00

No we don’t want that preacher Kate1949. He needs to be told that he’s breaking the law.

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 12:18:29

Clashes in Norway and Italy as well? I haven't read up on that, yet.
How did that go down?

Kate1949 Fri 17-Oct-25 12:17:29

There is a preacher here in Birmingham who has urged people to 'show no mercy' to the Israeli fans were they to attend. Is that what we want?

AGAA4 Fri 17-Oct-25 12:17:26

As I have said I don't agree with banning but there are ways to manage this without violent clashes.
Some on here seem to think that if the police are there then no violence. That doesn't stop hooligans wherever they are from.

How do the local people feel about it? Knowing what happened in Holland?

I don't think they were asked, no more than Londoners are consulted about the disruption to London caused by protest marches and blockades for every and any cause.

The policing needed in London is often for wee old folk sitting quietly on pavements with placards.
Not young aggressive football fans, who have already shown how they can act when abroad.

And sometimes it's needed for thugs like the Oxford university student (now arrested but unfortunately not on the day) who led the chants of "Gaza, Gaza make us proud, put the Zios in the ground"

www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/25543711.oxford-university-student-named-violent-zios-chant/

Oreo Police are taken away from other crime in their thousands for the regular pro Palestine marches. agree and that hasn't been seen as a problem to justify banning.

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 12:10:51

Yes, those wee old folk. smile
The idea of banning a football club because of fan behaviour, is not a new concept. English clubs have been banned for that.
The plant to play without any fans, is not a new concept.
Trouble is, the trouble was mostly outside of the stadium.

AGAA4 Fri 17-Oct-25 12:10:43

I don't think there have been many seriously violent clashes with police in London over the marches. Most people on them really don't want to be caught in a massive fight. There is usually a mixture of men women and children too.
It's mainly men fired up on testosterone at football matches who are likely to turn to violence very quickly if they are riled.

Oreo Fri 17-Oct-25 12:09:00

Yes AGAA4 it can be done if the will is there.

Oreo Fri 17-Oct-25 12:08:05

Oreo of course this can be policed but it means many more police being taken away from other crime in the city. They know that there is likely to be violence and people will be hurt.

The only other way to do this is to keep the Maccabi fans in one area. I think this is done anyway. They can control things better inside the stadium. After the match police could escort Maccabi to buses located nearby and get them far away as soon as possible.
This has been successfully done before where there was likely to be violence.

Oreo Fri 17-Oct-25 12:07:08

And that’s here in the UK!

Oreo Fri 17-Oct-25 12:06:47

Celtic and Rangers matches must need some clever policing for instance.
