Maccabi Tel Aviv football club banned

Aston Villa have banned the fans from Tel Aviv from attending the game. They say that after the violence in Amsterdam when the Jewish club was there that they don't feel they can provide the level of security needed to keep fans and nearby residents safe.
There have been clashes in Norway and Italy when Israel compete.
Aston Villa say it is not antisemitism but just being safety conscious.
Maybe another way could have been found without the ban?

The government has pledged additional resources if they come. SAG which advises the council with regard to issuing safety certificates will revise the decision if West Midland Police changes its risk assessment.

So it looks as if this decision will not be a political one, but one determined by the polices risk assessment which is how it should be.

Yes the police are the ones with the experience and if they say it is too dangerous they should be listened to.

Presumably the TelAviv police are anti-Semites as they had to ban the match yesterday due to rioting. Two TelAviv teams fans can't behave so match cancelled.

Let's hope no one is hurt if this goes ahead.

Violence and racist chanting.

It looks as though a political decision will allow the Maccabi fans to come. On their own heads be it.
The government have assured the police they will give them resources to manage it. I feel very sorry for the people in that area.
It's up to Maccabi to ensure they weed out trouble makers. Everywhere they go there has been violence and vindictive chanting.

The simple fact is this is just a game. Either cancel it or have a closed door game where fans are not allowed.

I agree.

No. It's a knock out competition. The winner of this match earns the right to play in the next round. Aston Villa has done absolutely nothing wrong and doesn't deserve to be denied the opportunity to go through to the next round. Even the Maccabi Tel Aviv team should be able to go through if it wins. It's the fans who are being punished as a result of their history.

You said yourself that it’s about maintaining public order.

About both the fans and the protesters who intend to gather if the game goes ahead. Whether there are fans f any kind allowed or not..

The issue is not about football fans from Israel or anywhere abroad. It is about a powerful protest group who have ensured their desires are met through the threat of force that the police cannot manage.

Today the Israelis. Tomorrow………?

For those who think this matter is just about football fan violence ( it isn’t) what about the situation where Ajax were coming to Villa Park? They’ve shown violence to Tel Aviv fans and several just jailed in Amsterdam, yet there would be no question of banning them. They’re not Jews and not from Israel.
What the police are bothered by is the very real threat of pro Palestinians outside the ground spoiling for a fight with the maccabi fans.

I very much doubt whether you were consulted (or even informed) when the decision to ban the fans was made. You need to accept the real reasons and stop trying to twist this to suit your agenda.

Or perhaps you need to accept the real reason and I already know it.🤔

Hahaha!

AGAA4 Mon 20-Oct-25 19:29:02

That's just your opinion of the real reason Oreo.
Why would the police issue a ban on these fans without good reason. Are you saying the police and Aston Villa are antisemitic and that's the only reason they have been banned?

As the supporting fans are not allowed to visit you will be unable to discover what their behaviour is like.

I have no idea what other fans have been banned as I have little interest in football, but it is patently unfair and extremely rude to arrange a match, then at a later date tell the visiting team that their fans cannot attend.
Cancel the match

It's not those who have called for a ban who are rude. That really is victim blaming.

“Death to the Arabs” Awful.

Just as bad as “Show no mercy”

And there in lies the problem………..

bmacca Mon 20-Oct-25 18:13:07

Violent, racist Israeli football fans do not represent Jews. They don’t even represent all Israelis. Conversely, an aversion to hosting violent, racist football fans is not antisemitism. It is a public order matter. Meanwhile, imagining that violent foreign football fans who chant “Death to the Arabs!” need protecting because they also happen to be Jewish is antisemitic and Islamophobic in equal measure.

Perhaps they could explain their reasons to the police who obviously are working on up to date intel. Or are they antisemitic too?

Babs03 Mon 20-Oct-25 17:53:39

I really don’t understand why other teams with known hooligans turning up at matches are banned for this, including the team Maccabi played in Amsterdam, yet normally balanced posters are intent upon this team’s fans not being banned.
Why?
Do the same rules not apply?

growstuff Mon 20-Oct-25 17:47:25

Then cancel the match forthwith.

You CANNOT have the host country (under whatever guise, MPs, SAG, police, community, government etc) deciding to ban the supporters of one of the teams after the match has been arranged. It is shameful and brings disgrace to Britain.

Why we are constantly subjected to this constant violent behaviour on the pretext it is to do with football is beyond me.

It doesn't bring shame on the host country if visiting fans can't behave.

www.theguardian.com/football/2025/oct/19/tel-aviv-football-derby-between-hapoel-and-maccabi-called-off-after-rioting

For those who keep saying is anti semitic watch the vid included with this piece. Was the Tel Aviv derby with the Maccabi team and another Israeli team, which had to be called off due to the violent clashes.
So, are we then to assume that this violence was caused by antisemitism?
This argument is totally nonsensical.

But there’s been loads of posts about other fan clashes at various matches, as if that’s what we’re talking about.

“Maccabi fans just want to fight”.

Well perhaps.

But who would they be fighting! The Aston Villa fans? F it was just about football.

But the fight (if it happened) would be the Maccabi fans, the Pro-Palestine protesters and anyone else who supported either side.

You can’t pretend it’s just about football with that on the agenda. Or you can………

No it's about risk and defending public order.
