Could this be the start of something great? Trump is doing his best.

Yes, fancy, reports coming in about greatly reduced capabilities. But goodness, he is still capable of much damage and danger.

fancythat Tue 21-Oct-25 10:20:27

But Putin, weaker than he may be, cant be trusted.

fancythat Tue 21-Oct-25 10:19:44

If Putin moves into other European countries we only have ourselves to blame for not doing enough. It is a absolute disaster.

Persoanlly, I think that Putin, and his army, are quite a bit more weak than I thought.
To say nothing of the Eu. Or UN.

Trump is stronget than I thought.
Zelensky - who cant help but feel sorry for Zelensky.

Kyiv Daily reports this morning that 'Ukraine is preparing for long-term contract for 25 Patriot systems after meetings in the US'
There are more productive meetings actually going on behind the scenes.
Trump is an all 'look at me' performance, that people, at the moment, have to endure.

I expect that Zelensky will be expanding his English vocabulary to include a range of swear words after this meeting.
While the joint public appearance of the pair remained good-natured, one report indicates a far more tumultuous dynamic between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy behind the scenes at the White House on Friday.
According to the FT, the US president repeatedly told his Ukrainian counterpart to accept Vladimir Putin's terms for ending the war - warning him that the Russian leader would "destroy" Ukraine if it did not agree.
The newspaper cited sources as saying the meeting descended into a "shouting match", with Trump "cursing all the time".

Trump is a duplicitous toad. One moment he appears to be helping Zelensky, the next he is cosying up to Putin his murderous pal.

Starmer and most of Europe show some help and sympathy to Ukraine, but then appear to go quiet.

The Donbas region has been mentioned. Putin wants all of it, not just the bits he has grabbed.
Did you see the tie that eejit Hesgith was wearing?
Russian colours.!

I don't agree at all MayBee. If Putin can get what he wants by illegally going to war with another country, where will he go to next?

nanna8 Mon 20-Oct-25 13:20:28

Yes, that is why I think he ‘gets’ Putin. Cut from the same cloth.

MayBee70 Mon 20-Oct-25 13:08:32

From what I’ve heard Trump says Ukraine have to be prepared to give up land to Russia, I suppose so that Putin can save face. Which, up to a point I agree with. Except for the fact that you give Russia an inch and they’ll take a mile and Finland might be next. Nightmare scenario. ( and let’s not forget that Trump himself has threatened to take over other countries; he’s done so many awful things since becoming president that people, me included, are starting to forget some of them).

I don’t really care if he wants peace to make himself look good - so long as he helps get there it is ok by me. By any means . If he can manage to get through to Putin, well good for him. If anyone could understand Putin it would probably be Trump.

He won't get through to Putin.
Putin gets through to Trump.
Trump doesn't understand the love for Mother Russia- he only thinks about love of self and you have said so.
Peace will never come while Putin holds power and I can't see that happening any time soon.

Indeed Jane112: Finland is sure to be in Mr Putin's sights, as there is potential minerals to be gained.

I get the impression that Trump wants peace. For his own sake. To make himself look good.
And he gets annoyed with Zelensky, as Zelensky is not playing ball.

I could be way off.

I think you’re right.

Smileless2012 Mon 20-Oct-25 10:19:59

I think you're right fancythat. I still can't get over Trump greeting Putin on a red carpet, clapping as he came toward him like a trained seal!!!

I agree Jane dirty deals are what he excels at not as we can clearly see, acting as peacemaker.

Jane112 Mon 20-Oct-25 10:14:28

And what happens if Trump, directed by Putin, persuades Zelensky to surrender to Russia? Which country is next Moldova? Estonia? Poland?Trump is not a peacemaker, he wants the land in Gaza and the minerals in Ukraine and he'll do any dirty deal with Putin and Netanyahu to get them. 44 people were killed in Gaza yesterday including children on a bus yet Trump says the ceasefire is holding.

fancythat Mon 20-Oct-25 09:54:30

Zelensky was never going to win this war against Putin.

He may have thought and expected to get more help?

ronib Mon 20-Oct-25 09:30:24

Zelensky was never going to win this war against Putin. Only someone as delusional as Boris Johnson could have persuaded Zelensky to fight and not take a diplomatic solution. It’s a relief that Trump is trying to end the war in Ukraine rather than supply more weapons of destruction.

Smileless2012 Mon 20-Oct-25 09:20:35

Putin isn't playing ball so why doesn't Trump get annoyed with him? Trump's treatment of Zelensky sickens me; it's like watching a cat playing with a mouseangry.

You may well right Smileless, sadly. But Trump is riding high at the moment on the world stage, the place where he best likes to be. For once I hope he capitalises on that and he plays his hand to Ukraine's advantage, without falling for Putin's flattery, manipulation and game playing as he so often has before.

Zelensky has been burned by Trump before but any hope is hope- what's the alternative?

Smileless2012 Sat 18-Oct-25 13:26:17

hopefully Trump will play his current upper hand to Putin to Ukraine's advantage I doubt it, he's done very little to help Ukraine so far, and I think it's cruel to keep on giving Zelensky and the Ukrainian people false hope.

If Trump was going to deliver, he'd have done so already.

Maremia Sat 18-Oct-25 13:20:57

Good to read of any sign of Putin losing influence. Thanks.
