Surely there are better ways to spend council money.

I live in Nottingham, and would rather see English or British flags than the Palestinian one.

NotSpaghetti That's the Council House in the city centre. It's Nottingham City Council that put that up. The Reform ones are Nottinghamshire County Council.

How many Palestinian flags are there in Nottingham?

The flags on lampposts round here have been taken down and replaced with massive poppies

Who knew flags could be so expensive.

The price arrived at is for flags, fixtures, fittings and installation (using a cherry picker in some cases).

Lynnisa Mon 27-Oct-25 18:05:06

A great many more ways

It definitely looks like the Council are paying for the flags, not Reform UK.

Sigh.

As if Council money is not stretched enough as it is.
Stupid people.

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 17:22:23

What a waste of money!

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 17:21:54

Thanks Allira. Yes, I agree, a national flag should not be used as a weapon.

Ps no idea what's in Reform coffers btw.

Allira, are you agreeing that the flags have been bought out of Reform's coffers?
Just looking at your recent post.

Oh sorry, no.

I very much object to union flags being described as divisive flags of hate

It was this. It is sad if our Union flag is being used to promote divisiveness and we should reclaim it.

At least they were Union flags representing the UK.😃

Not this one on the council building

That has to be AI!!
I've never seen a flag that large.

Oh, wait a minute .....

It is the National flag of the United Kingdom and should be treated with respect, whatever your political views.

I agree.

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 16:57:29

Deliberately positioned. That is intent. Do you really think the intent was 'welcome'?

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 16:56:28

Did Reform make the original claim, that it was their own money spent on flags?

Oreo Mon 27-Oct-25 16:40:41

Wow NotSpaghetti that’s a humdinger 😁

MaizieD Mon 27-Oct-25 14:51:45

This was Reform’s own money according to a poster, should be easy enough to check.

The flags which are the subject of this thread are being funded by Notts CC money, not by Reform.

In the roads where there are few flying they have been positioned outside Asian owned shops Chinese and Indian restaurants

So no, they are not there just because there are lamp posts there. The few flags have been deliberately positioned.

Casdon Mon 27-Oct-25 14:20:51

Good grief NotSpaghetti. I would be very unhappy if I was an employee and my office window was blocked by a flag like it appears is the case on that building. It looks ridiculous.

All the flags Reform sponsored a couple of months ago have vanished everywhere I’ve been since, on motorways and dual carriageways, and in towns and villages. I imagine that the £75,000 will end up being money ill spent as the people of Nottingham decide they won’t put up with flag bombing.

I still see a few, but many Councils have taken them down.
Scared no doubt of misplaced shrieks of ‘racists’.
Other countries would laugh at us.

There weren't any in my local area, but there were a couple of painted mini-roundabouts. They just look scruffy.

Namsnanny Mon 27-Oct-25 14:13:51

Maremia

As with anything you do, the 'intent' is important.
Are these flags being used to welcome, or to intimidate?

Nether imv.
If any intent could be prescribed, claiming it back from being seen as racist is the number one intention.

Every nation has a flag and we in Britain have a particularly nice one.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong or sinister about the union flag but I think various uses and interpretations have been put upon it by nasty groups of individuals.

I think that given the straightened times we live in, it is stupid to spend £75,000 on flags and fixings when there are surely many more pressing needs that should be met financially out the council's budget.
