Surely there are better ways to spend council money.

Flippinheck Sun 02-Nov-25 08:05:41

In an area where the council is close to bankruptcy huge poppies have been attached to lamp posts. There is no money to fix potholes, fund people who need to be in care homes, and can’t afford to properly assess or provide for SEN children, but they can do this. No disrespect to what the poppies represent.

Notwithstanding personal views on flags,I find it difficult to understand anyone who thinks that this is a good use of local authority money .

Some posters are determined that our national flags are symbols of hate.

That is their interpretation. Others may disagree.

That';s precisely why it's divisive!!!!!!

QED

I was pretty much with growstuff until this point.

I have[not just this thread] been pondering "divisive" stuff.

Something can or cannot be done [and I am trying to formulate things in my head so I say properly what I mean]
on the basis of "well some poeple disagree with somethingand therefore it is divisive, so can or cannot be done because of that.

That is not a reason at all, or certainly not a good enough one.

Whatever it is, should or should not be done on it's own merit.

I don't think I actually wrote that flags shouldn't be flown, despite the fact that I find them a creepy in the wrong context. I'm not personally being threatened by them, so I would just shrug my shoulders and get on with my business.

The point I was making is that they are divisive and the points people are raising prove that.

Flying flags in public places in a context which gives out a jingoistic message is guaranteed to be divisive. The original purpose of flags was to identify a particular side in a battle and they just emphasise divisions in society when used as one side's "standard".

But i would absolutely fight for the right for people to fly both those flags.

And spend £75,000 of your money to fly them?

Whether posters like them or not, the St.Georges flag is England’s national flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and the Union Flag/Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom 🇬🇧

No amount of discussion will change this, thank goodness.

Somehow it’s fine to fly the Welsh and Scottish flags but it’s only the English flag that some English people have a problem with. It’s the old hair shirt at work again.😬

It's fine to fly the Welsh and Scottish flags because the Welsh and the Scots aren't draping themselves in their national flags and attacking hotels where asylum seekers are being held while so draped.

Why is this so very difficult to understand?

MayBee70 Sat 01-Nov-25 22:02:05

Imo it’s because the BNP claimed it for their own years ago and it has never recovered from that association.

Of course, there is a wonderful Irony, that St George was Middle Eastern origin.

So what?

Everybody is judging everybody who disagrees with their own perspective on this thread, it’s going round and round in circles. Has one person changed their stance - I doubt it.

I have changed a bit.

fwiw!

Or perhaps we should all just accept that we can’t change other peoples minds about any flags and the way they are used, only our own minds. That’s the reality.

But no amount of discussion will make me change how I feel about the Palestinian flags and the pride flag, perhaps we have to learn to accept that people will have flags we don't like.

No amount of telling me that (a fact that I actually have known for 7+decades, so why keep on saying it?) will make me feel anything but distaste for those fluttering around me and I will continue to call them out for what they represent.

I don’t want to change the, I just want them gone.

Same here!

these massed rows of St George’s flags, put up so high it takes proper equipment to take them down, tolerated by the council, in the lovely landscapes of CoDurham, are designed to intimidate and control.

Sometimes, Wyllow, you talk utter nonsense.

I’ve had to travel through several local areas recently where there are lots of flags and they are areas where I wouldn’t walk alone at night, and that’s not because they have migrant hotels in them. The houses and their gardens are usually pretty scruffy, too. Not my idea of patriotism.

Allira Sat 01-Nov-25 18:07:13

Best I do not to engage with you growstuff as your personal attacks are becoming quite tedious and utter rubbish.

PS. I've never claimed the Union Jack is a symbol of hate, but in certain contexts it does represent jingoism.
