Its a question of the degree of relevance, neither dismiss them out of hand, nor over value them?
I think we all read them and think either, "well, there's a good point, it throws light on the matter for me, it 'speaks' to me
or
"this is just "too many steps removed for me, its not helpful".

Another stabbing by an immigrant. When do we wake up and smell the coffee?
(206 Posts)I am so sad to read of yet another stabbing resulting in the death of an innocent 49 year old man.
How can our government standby and allow this to happen again and again?
I feel sad, frightened and in total disbelief that this is happening on such a regular basis.
There will be a revolution and God help all the politicians.
If we dismissed anecdotes out of hand we might never have had the smallpox vaccine. Edward Jenner, its inventor, acted on the 'folklore' that milkmaids who had caught cowpox were immune to smallpox. Anecdotes can stimulate scientific investigation.

Maybe start a thread on the causes of xenophobia.
(Google)
The fear of foreigners is called xenophobia, defined as the fear, dislike, or hatred of people perceived as being foreign or strange. This fear is often rooted in the perception of a conflict between an "in-group" and an "out-group" and can manifest as suspicion, hostility, or prejudice against individuals based on their nationality, culture, ethnicity, religion, or other differences.I do not have any fear of foreigners until they start behaving in a way that shows me they mean harm.
My father was a legal migrant to this country.
We have friends of all races, religions and political beliefs.
Our SIL was raised as a Muslim and our beautiful GC are mixed race.
I was accused by StoneofDestiny as being a Nazi, nothing could be further from the truth.
I simply believe many of the young men arriving illegally on our shores should not be here, they have no proof of who they are and many have come here to start a new life after committing crimes in their own country.
It is wrong and we are paying the price. You clearly have personal experience. and it is very interesting.
However do you not see that anecdotal experience is insufficient and what is needed are properly harvested statistics which are interpreted as free from bias as possible.what is needed are properly harvested statistics which are interpreted as free from bias as possible.
And the same should apply to whoever it was that accused another poster of being a Nazi without the proof of properly harvested statistics.
Part of my job was research and I did join Gransnet thinking it might be interesting to chat, to read the points of view of others.
I do remember one poster some time ago being constantly castigated for providing links

Sounds like an expression of her feelings , not an opinion backed by evidence. I'd not worry too much about this as specious insults are rife on interactive media.
I consider most of the threads on the situation in the middle east as provocative, and the Trump ones, I am afraid we all have to cope with different styles.

Anecdotal, life experiences how else do you suggest we contribute to a thread?
If we only quoted published papers GN would be as boring as watching paint dry…
Indeed GG13
If you start off deliberately posting a provocative uninformative O/P then the result can be just more slanging matches. Not helpful really.
Maybe they should be in chat?
Probably me, I do love opinions which are supported by facts and evidence. Anecdotes are good too, they add life to threads, but what drives me mad is when people post wildly inaccurate information, when it takes seconds to check it out first.
I also think that posts which challenge from the beginning eg ‘Wake up and smell the coffee’ will immediately set people at each others throats. I’d love a more informed, less bullish Gransnet - but I imagine we all have very different visions.

Can I do an anecdote? We had one family holiday in what the brochure described as a middle class yachting village, similar to Abersoch. One of our daughters was 8 years old, very tall could at a push have been thought to be 11. She had very blond curly hair. She was harassed whenever we went out if the gated resort into the village. This despite her father never leaving her side. One afternoon I went into the pharmacy. I wore over the knee trousers, long sleeved cotton shirt. It was an unpleasant experience.
I’ve been to India twice, never had a priblem

I agree casdon it has been a very useful tool for 'ordinary people' in many cases to organise. I am always wary, therefore, of people who want to exert further controls on it. But that is a different topic!

All these anecdotes!
Actually, I quite enjoy them.
I aim to please 👍

Discussing on social media is doing something, it can't be the only thing, and needs to run alongside direct action, political action, etc but
certainly lately it has been the beginning of any useful movement.
Isn’t that because it’s the biggest means of communication now? I can’t think how in the past it would have been possible to join in any movement in a similar way, you would have had to physically attend rallies, and lobby groups. It’s quite possible to get mass buy in for all sorts of things these days - look at the success of TikTok shop for example.
All these anecdotes!

Yes yet another anecdote from me, but hey ho!
You were lucky then Cossy my DD (barely in her teens) and I have been harassed in Turkey and Egypt 🤷♀️

Read the stats from other countries: same problems. Moaning as you do is imo avoiding this over all situation,
Plus the same old same old racist rant that implies that ALL incomers must be a Terrible Danger.
I had years with an abusive white husband, and just over 2 weeks ago was attacked at the end of an all white religious situation by a man who felt "Entitled".
There's good and bad in all cultures, faringdon.
Can we have a bit of perspective here please?👏👏👏👏👏
I would add that I have travelled, with a female friend, round Turkey and not once, not even once, were we ever “bothered” or “molested” by any men native to Turkey.
All anecdotes.

Definitely mass deportations and bring back the death penalty, this would reduce the prison population as well.
Lots of young men are flooding into our country with very different attitudes to towards society and especially the rights of women.
This nicey nicey attitude towards our immigration situation is not working.
The government is planning on building more towns! if you managed to house all of the people who are replacing our native population we are still going to be too stretched to provide healthcare, social care and even enough water!!
It's a numbers game and would still apply if we had green aliens arriving everyday.
Most of Europe is experiencing a rise in crimes against women being perpetrated by immigrant men as well.
Read the stats.
