Oh! The glorious irony

KCC, run at present by a rag tag mob of reform councillors, who vowed that they would never remove theSt Georges and Union flags from their streets have now said that they can’t put up christmas lights - celebrating a good British Christian tradition, unless the flags are removed, because of the danger.

Hahaha, what a bunch of losers.

Allira Tue 04-Nov-25 11:25:35

Plonkers.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Nov-25 11:31:41

Better they take them down over Christmas than they cause a fire by getting caught up in the electrics.

The flags can be returned once the Christmas lights come down.

😹😹😹

The flats are a waste of public money in my opinion.

Babs03 Tue 04-Nov-25 12:01:06

Perhaps the council could pay for Xmas decs shaped like the Union Jack. Would cost many thousands of pounds but surely their fans who voted them in won’t mind them squandering money like this.

Hoist with their own petard?
Couldn't resist it.

StripeyGran Tue 04-Nov-25 12:34:41

I'd like to stuff that petard somewhere.

Yes, life in Kent is one laugh after another just now. The diktat seems a little odd, because there are towns in Kent ( mine, for example) which feature no flags at all.
Will we be exempt, or..: watch this space.

Mamardoit Tue 04-Nov-25 13:16:05

If town centres usually have Christmas lights and the flags make that dangerous then obviously the flags need removing.

Flags should be on flag poles ideally. And maybe all public buildings should have a flag pole. The secondary school my grandchildren attend, (state comprehensive) always flies the Union flag as do the fire station and police station. Parish churches usually fly flags. I'm not sure if the town hall still uses the flag poles but our parish council office does.

Nothing wrong with flying our countries flags. That's all counties of the UK. They are all nice to see.

I'm sure they could get around the problem with a little thought ......but then it is Reform. 🙄

Why would anyone want to hoist a petard?

Mamardoit Tue 04-Nov-25 16:48:11

A petard is a small bomb.

In Shakespeare the phrase hoisted by his own petard means to be foiled by one’s own scheme or plan.

A petard was an explosive device, wasn't it? 'Hoist'= lifted into the air. So, 'blown up by your own bomb' grin

You learn something every day on gransnet!

Mamardoit Tue 04-Nov-25 17:25:24

Yes you do. And here's me thinking Shakespeare was a waste of time at school.

I found algebra more useful.
