Was the Britain we have today worth all the sacrifices made in WW2?

I was very sad to hear the WW2 veteran say on TV that he didn't think today's Britain was worth all the sacrifices made by all those who perished in the 2nd World War.
I understand his point, but it made me wonder - is he right?
What do other Gransnetters think?

Our country has gone down the pan. Crime - stabbings, shoplifting. Moral compass broken. The old soldier has a point. Its going to take a lot to turn it all round, Don't hold your breath.

I believe this is fear mongering. Maybe you should emigrate to Sudan, Syria or Venezuela, if you really want to experience a "broken country".

Not at all - it is simply pointing out what is true. Racial comments should and must be challenged. There are still enough of us not prepared to allow civilised society to deteriorate further by normalising racism.

I'm with you StoneofDestiny. I'm not going to be bullied by people who "tired" of hearing comments they don't like.

barmcake Sorry, you ruined your own argument with your second and third paragraphs.

Please take a look at the Danish model. They've cut illegal immigration by over 90%. They have drastically reduced benefits and incentives. Arrivals have to participate and contribute.

It's not racist to protect our borders or put our own citizens first. I will not be putting my heating on this winter. Am sure those staying in hotels will have it on 24 hours a day.

The oh so progressives will be the first to complain when housing, NHS, law & order and education finally collapse under the weight of benefits, benefits and more benefits go to the wrong people.

I would love to actually help Afgan women and children or those fleeing war in Sudan, but it has to be properly managed.

'That’s a comment worthy of Farage and Yaxley Lennon!'

I think things will get better, as they always have but not with the current cabinet and PM. They seem particularly clueless. When we left in the 1970s things were absolutely dire (Ted Heath etc) but things did improve later and I think they will again. Sprit of Dunkirk and all that! I have faith that someone with a bit of commonsense and leadership skills will appear - which party, who knows ?

We will see how people think when they vote again. Opinions vary according to the area in which you live, how it affects you and your family. Until you change places with them you have no idea. . Also look at facts and statistics. I am privileged where I live but many more are not.

Yes that is true. The next election should be interesting.

What I really take issue with is liberal lefties taking the high moral ground until it comes to themselves. Its do as I say, not as I do.

As someone I expect you’d dismiss as a liberal leftie, I’m fed up with comments like this. Based on what evidence ?
I don’t seek the moral high ground, I’m an ordinary mortal, struggling with the ethical dilemmas we all face right now. I don’t take a linear view, I see other views as welcome and a means of debating issues most of us find challenging

Plus there really is no need to be quite so rude eg yiur response to growstuff earlier,

I think you will find the rudeness was all on the part of Growstuff!

It is not up to you to make moral judgements on another poster whose views are different to yours.

Time to calm down, all these accusations of racism are ridiculous.

I quite agree.

Good link there Growstuff, with the nonsense statement that women and children aren’t safe in this country and Henny Penny
So much exaggeration and misstatements here., it’s as though The Donald has been influencing

*this country is no longer safe for women and children*

Ridiculous comment. You are more likely to be attacked if you are male. The area and the environment are big factors as in ANY country but to conclude the whole country is not safe is just absurd

I agree with you that it's a ridiculous comment. There are parts of some areas which have never been safe for women and children (or anybody). Claiming the whole country is unsafe is like Henny Penny screeching about the sky falling in.

They will obviously be more white as more of the population is white!

And the overwhelming majority of Muslims do not stab people in the neck! Seriously - get a grip of your undisguised racism

Do you think I dont know that the majority of Muslims dont stab people in the neck!

Your ‘undisguised racism’ comment is hilarious. Its a lazy accusation against those of us genuinely concerned about our country.

The name of the man charged for the stabbing in Birmingham is Djeison Rafael. That is not a Muslim name.

He is a British national – a second generation British. He is one of yours actually.

How dare you think that those of us who are concerned about racism don't care for our country just as much as you do! The fact is that we have different values. Our parents and grandparents fought a war to keep us free from the kind of values you apparently support. It is because I care for my country that I hate the racists and bigots who would destroy democracy itself given half a chance.

StoneofDestiny Tue 11-Nov-25 14:49:29

Absolutely - speak up, and stand up to be counted. Who would have thought the Front Line would move to Gransnet?

Maremia Tue 11-Nov-25 13:56:36

Yes, and the generation before defeated that mentality.
Up to us to prevent it gaining traction again.

I am very concerned about the fact anybody can look at rare incidents and assume they can extrapolate that everybody who shares their colour, religion etc is a danger to the rest of us. It was that mentality that led to the Holocaust!
