Palestine Action activists guilty of criminal damage
Recalled for a further appointment after a routine mammogram
I was very sad to hear the WW2 veteran say on TV that he didn't think today's Britain was worth all the sacrifices made by all those who perished in the 2nd World War.
I understand his point, but it made me wonder - is he right?
What do other Gransnetters think?

No, this country is no longer safe for women and children.
I've had "white whore" shouted at me by a bunch of men who - judging by looks - were Asian.
This is modern Britain.
and we the British taxpayers are apparently having to pay for it all!!
This comment was said by so many of the hotel shouters, many of whom hadn’t worked a day in their life and had no intention of doing so.
Many had sapped up taxpayer money by spending time in prison and even more taxpayers money forcing police to try to safeguard the public from their overt racism and obnoxious behaviour.
Or maybe all the travelling flag wavers will turn to community service and enlist to support food banks, join community litter picks, provide transport support for the disabled or volunteer in charity shops?
I cannot think of one positive thing Yaxley Lennon and Farage have done to improve life in the UK, not one thing that brings communities together or supports those in need. A hate agenda never does that.
Do you imagine that if every illegal immigrant was removed from the UK tomorrow that everything would improve? What do you think the people who support Farage and Yaxley Lennon would turn to next to focus their hatred on? Would all those people willing to tour the country hanging flags suddenly turn to positive community service? What great cause would the rioters and hotel shouters get out of bed to support next? Who would be the next victims to be blamed by them? Because there will be more targets……..

Thst's why we have to reclaim the flags
Yes, the Saltire and the Welsh dragon have also been used wrongly.
StoneofDestiny I'm with you in being one of those fed up with a particular narrative. I'm actually very proud of the values which are part of my nationality. The issue is, of course, that the flag wavers don't actually have the same values we have and they don't want us to "own" our own country.
Iam64 I am patriotic, I love my country, I am proud of our flags from the four countries that make up the U.K. along with the Union Flag. I am proud of the things that make U.K. different to other countries.
Just rather fed up of being told that the above makes me (take your pick) far right, jingoistic, little Englander
And many of us are fed up with the narrative that waving a flag, tying flags to
Lampposts, spraying flags on war monuments, churches and roundabouts means you are more patriotic or proud of your country than people who just work hard, supervise their children, contribute positively to their neighbourhood and get on with their neighbours wherever they are from.

We need to remember husbands beating wives was not reported at one point because it was legal to do so until 1861. The Domestic Violence and Matrimonial Proceedings Act only became law in 1976 in the UK! Domestic abuse was only really defined in law in 2021. Marital rape was not even recognised as a crime until the 20th century.
It was difficult for women to leave violent men as they had no right to take their children and no financial capability of surviving as single people. GeForce was seen as shameful.
Despite the reforms - 40% of the men arrested for their rioting in Southport to “support our women and children” had previous convictions for domestic violence. Yet they were yelling about uncivilised asylum seekers.
We may imagine there was some past idyll in this country, but the reality is quite different. Much went on behind closed doors and was ‘tolerated’ as acceptable.
So no,
They even put that clip on our tv here. Nothing stays the same and many of our countries have changed and not in a good way. Certainly applies to Australia as well. Nasty violent crime is increasing for one. So is shoplifting and possibly domestic violence though that may be just more reporting.

Getting back on track …. And what the 100 year old War Veteran said.
He has spoken exclusively to the DM since he was on TV and here’s what he meant.Primrose posted this…..but very few seem to have noticed. The veteran’s regrets were nothing to do with crime, immigration or public services. They are about greed, selfishness and lack of commitment to country and community. And I think many Gransnetters could agree with this.
I’ve just caught up with this thread, thanks for this Lahlah65. It’s restored my faith. There are some bigoted, ill informed and downright offensive comments here about Muslim, ‘some posters’ seem even more fed up with them than they are with ‘lefties ‘. Hard to believe but there we have it.
This constant moaning, talking our country down is pathetic. Where’s the Dunkirk spirit. The are we downhearted approach. The patriotism that led to determination to end mr H’s determination to dominate.
Actually it’s me you need to thank Iam64. I shared what the war veteran said. Lahlah65 thank you.

Of course it was worth it. What would have been the awful alternative?

Life in Britain is still very unfair with a big divide between those who have and those who don't, the wealthy/comfortably off and the poor. There are also so many people who aren't prepared to work for their living and are allowed to claim benefits which the rest of us are effectively paying. This means that there is less available to pay those who genuinely cannot work or who are retired.
Sadly there is also a big divide between north and south, with most affluent areas being in the south. Can you seriously remember a time when it wan't like that?
In my lifetime NO, and that has been the problem, too many giveaways
Hmmm! Funnily enough, there are people who complain when the giveaways get taken away. Usually they mean there are too many giveaways - until they themselves get taken away from.
Presumably you disagree with the premise made by some that life has become worse or even "broken".

Well Caleo, I disagree with you regarding the ceremonies of remembrance. They mark our respect for those who gave their lives to protect their families and countries, not just in past wars, but also conflicts since. It gives folk an opportunity to remember them and also to reflect about others impacted by war. My Mother was evacuated from Coventry in her early teens to escape the bombing, but many of our relatives were killed during the war.
Silent pity, as the years pass, will be replaced by forgetfulness.
I could not agree more. The point of Remembrance Services and Parades are exactly to ensure people do not forget those men, women and animals who were sacrificed for our freedom. Silent pity? What is that? Pity for who? What? What you have said makes no sense at all.

Who offer up their sister to be raped by the brother of a female raped by a member of their family, their so called justice
Oh GG13 this truly shocked me.
I didn’t know Islam allowed this form of ‘justice’.
‘An eye for an eye” writ large indeed.Do you ever fact check anything? Anything like this is some perverted cultural norms and not to do with Islam. They might try to cloak it in the religion but they are wrong. I recently went to Morocco, a very Islamic country, flew from Manchester so most of the passengers were Bradford Muslims. They were fine, no hassle at all. Morocco was fine, some women wore headscarves, many didn't, no weird looks at them. People were polite and pleasant on the whole. Nothing like the Taliban. It's like judging Christianity by the Puritans or the nutty US Ebangelicals.
The act of offering up a sister to be raped by the brother of a female who was raped by a family member is not an Islamic instruction or teaching. Islam strongly condemns all forms of sexual violence, including rape, within and outside the family, and considers it a grave sin and crime.
Islamic Position on Rape and Sexual Violence
Rape is strictly prohibited in Islam and is regarded as a serious crime deserving severe punishment. The offender, even if a family member, faces harsh legal consequences including death penalty in some interpretations, because sexual violence violates the dignity and honor of the victim and family alike.
Islam does not tolerate retaliatory sexual violence or revenge by harming innocent relatives in this manner. Instead, Islamic law emphasizes the protection of all individuals’ dignity and rights, including women and family members.
Cases of sexual abuse, including within families, are subject to stringent prosecution and strict legal punishments. Consent does not negate the crime of sexual abuse under Islamic law.
Rejecting Retaliatory Sexual Violence
There is no foundation in Islamic teachings or jurisprudence for “exchanging” or offering someone as a victim of sexual violence in retaliation for the rape of another. Such an act contradicts Islamic principles of justice, mercy, and the protection of human dignity.
Islamic sources and scholars uniformly condemn sexual aggression and instruct believers to protect and defend family members, especially women, from harm.
Therefore, the scenario described is not supported or authorized by Islamic teachings or Sharia law. Rather, Islam mandates the safeguarding of victims and the administration of justice against perpetrators without causing harm or injustice to others in response.
Very well said!!!!
As I pointed out before, it really is strange that a thread about the aftermath about WW2 should turn into yet another Islamophobic hatefest. It seems to be a topic which obsesses people so much, they just can't contain it.

As far as inequality data shows the UK was narrowing the gap until Mrs Thatcher got her hands on government...
