It was a 70 minutes speech that was edited- BBC showed beginning- and end filming him verbatim. So yes indeed he said the words. Most if not all the British newspapers edited same speech and edited in similar way, as did most countries and media outlets around the world. The BBC was not an outlier.

Trump is suing for defamation. But in light of above it will be hard for him to establish in what way he was defamed even if he manages to prove it was broadcast in Florida- state he is making his claim.

There's a video on BBC website today showing Trump in White House stating " In a little while you'll be seeing I'm suing the BBC for putting words in my mouth, they literally put words in my mouth. They had me saying things I never said....They actually put terrible things in my mouth, things I didn't say...." (listen to all video for full speech - he rambles a lot!)

BBC has said it will defend Trump's lawsuit. This video is evidence of Trump saying something not factual against BBC. The BBC should not be cowed and I do think it is doing the right thing in defending the claim.

And he released from prison the perpetrators of that event which imo proves that he supported them. Doesn’t it?

Well editing to completely change what someone actually said is as bad as completely making it up.

The words were said by Trump, but not in that particular order, so the meaning is the same.
This may guarantee that Trump never gets another royal invite. Hope so, especially as we all pay for the bbc as well as financing the RF.

Kandinsky you may be happy to pay over your licence fee to Trump and see the demise of the BBC but I am definitely not happy about the prospect of either or both happening. I don't think I am a lone voice on GN.

Trump indeed does it all the time Casdon, even today ranting over and over the BBC put terrible words in his mouth that he didn't say.

Both parties will get discovery after all.

I would hope that such a lawsuit would be thrown out as ‘vexatious’ - since it so clearly is.

It was akin to Eric Morecambe talking about the Andre Previn piece he couldn’t play. Trump does it all the time himself, so perhaps counter suing is the way forward.

He won't win but I couldn't care less what happens to the BBC.

Of course 'they have a leg to stand on'. Trump's making false allegations; no words were put into his mouth. Even someone as stupid as he is can't really expect anyone to believe the BBC had him saying things he never said.

Well as the BBC have already apologised they haven’t really got a leg to stand on.
They’ll have to pay up.

Is Trump's argument one of 'reputational damage'?
That could be difficult for him to prove.

I agree the BBC should defend it fully. The BBC has a strong case so I hope it does defend and not seek to settle.

The BBC will fight it but will no doubt end up settling out of court.It’s their own stupid and duplicitous fault in the first place.

He typically does this because he knows. At least in the US, that it will settle out of court. He gets a payoff and can say he "won" in court.

The BBC needs to fight it fully. He does not want to go through the discovery process when they do.

This and the Pulitzer case will be interesting.
