Do you think that is reassuring?

It wasn't posted for 'reassurance' (but then, I don't see security threats under every bed). It was posted to question why, after more than a decade of positive UK government support for Fattah, mostly by tory governments, these tweets, which date from 2011, weren't 'discovered' sooner? Strange how they have suddenly emerged in time to cause maximum embarrassment to a Labour government.

Because people have been trying to find things to criticise Labour with ( and Keir in particular) ever since ‘donkey gate’. Beth Rigby on Sky News seems to be conducting a personal vendetta against him.

However if the bar is set to 'labour are jut as bad as the tories' that's not really an party ai am interested in.

This is the problem that badenoch has, in that much of what she says is interesting and I agree with a some of it, but obviously this is set against what the Tories actually did in power, on many subjects not just this one. Pretty much everyone I know got rid of X when Musk took over. I can't see many people randomly researching tweets and retweets from 2010 on a regular basis.

But this is puzzling me, from yesterday's BBC News on line report:

In 2014, Abdel Fattah was nominated for a European human rights award, the Sakharov Prize, but this was withdrawn over tweets about Israel he posted in 2012.

Why didn't the tories act? Why did they allow his citizenship? Why did they call for his release?

(And I might just remind folks that the current leader of the tory party has UK citizenship acquired in dubious circumstances)

To me, he bears all the hallmarks of someone who self dramatises and has little sense of reality on the MH spectrum and gets everyone running around him in a most dramatic way.

Nobody I knew got rid of X, that's confirmation bias on both our parts. It is an incredibly useful tool, and of course also has its share of crazies. It has been beyond useful for feminists in various campaigns/ sharing of information.
I couldn't care how or why the information came out. That's not my priority when people are speaking of killing Jews.

Alaa Abdel Fallah was not subjected to a normal examination when applying for British citizenship because he claimed it through his mother who was born in London while her mother was studying for a PHD, one of the loopholes apparently of the Human Rights Law. He also claimed to be a prisoner of conscience, hence the cross party support. The Conservatives granted him citizenship.
Since becoming PM Starmer has avidly supported his case and welcomed him into Britain without running basic checks on his background.
Abdel has 'apologised unreservedly for his offensive racist tweets.'
This was followed however by:
"I am shaken that, just as I am being reunited with my family for the first time in 12 years, several historic tweets of mine have been republished and used to question and attack my integrity and values, escalating to calls for the revocation of my citizenship." BBC website, today.
Integrity and values?

The whole debacle raises the question of how efficient are our systems for giving citizenship or asylum. It just beggars belief that the powers that be (on either side of the political spectrum) wouldn't check social media where people are often unfiltered. I can't stand Trump, nor his politics, but his requirement of being able to check your social media upon entry to a country might well be a good idea. We just need to ensure that we don't use reasonable political ideology or criticism to keep people out.

This government has already peaked at maximum embarrassment without this.

I suppose that Starmer just carried on following whatever the Conservatives had been doing, without giving it much thought.

I find it extraordinary that all the politicians involved in battling for this man to be freed by the Egyptian government and the FO, claim to have never seen any of his awful comments.It’s a level of ineptitude and incompetence that beggars belief.

Exactly MaizieD the BBC pointed out yesterday on the news that it was a cross party group campaigning for his release.

The gift of British citizenship has been given far too lightly, but once given it will be almost impossible to remove; the lawyers will see to that. Parliament is becoming more and more subservient to human rights laws, when it should be Parliament which is supreme. Starmer is a human rights lawyer, and will endorse all legal challenges to his deportation.

Why do politicians of all parties waste so much time on these undesirables with the most tenuous of links to Britain? Or is it just lawyers, representing the legal profession, using these cases to to undermine Parliament's supremacy?

For his foul tweets, remove his vicarious British citizenship, based on the fact his mother was here for short while as a student, we hand it out like confett. Thanks Patel. Jail him for 3 years, I as a taxpayer am not happy to support this vile individual, and his family, for life, because no one in their right mind would employ him.
I am pleased to say neither of my local MPs signed a letter agreeing to him coming here, and several that did are now writing to starmer to ask him to review granting this Islamist the right to come here. So angry .
