GB News collaboration with the Trump organisation- Do you think it undermines British democracy with mis information?

Britain’s media regulator Ofcom is under pressure to investigate a GB News interview with Donald Trump after complaints that it contained misleading and inaccurate claims that the network failed to challenge. The rightwing channel claimed a “world exclusive sit-down interview” with the US president in November, in which Trump asserted that human-induced climate change was “a hoax” and that London had no-go areas for police and that the capital had “sharia law”.

Trump made other claims about law and order and immigration that critics said were either left unchallenged or effectively endorsed by the GB News interviewer Bev Turner, the host of its US-based nightly show.

Among those calling for an investigation is Chris Banatvala, Ofcom’s founding director of standards. He said “I’ve never seen anything comparable on a UK-established domestic broadcaster”.

Ofcom officials have spent the last few weeks examining at least three detailed complaints co-signed by tens of thousands of people, but have not yet decided whether to launch a formal investigation. The regulator is facing increasing accusations that it is reluctant to intervene over politically difficult issues of impartiality.

The complaints point to rules stating broadcasters must not “materially mislead the audience” and rules around due impartiality. A complaint from Bob Ward, from the LSE’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, said: “The GB News interview with President Trump was the most blatant example of a British media organisation collaborating with the Trump administration to undermine British democracy with this misinformation.”
Complaints have also been made about Trump’s claim that London has areas “where the police don’t even want to go” and that “you have sharia law where they don’t even want to obey the laws of … your country”.

There was no challenge from the comments from Turner. When Trump said people are “being stabbed in the ass or worse”, she stated: “It’s true … It’s awful, it is. And it feels much safer [in the US].”

A complaint over a lack of impartiality from the 38 Degrees campaign group pointed to Turner “praising and endorsing Trump multiple times”. During the interview, she described a speech by Trump as “one of the greatest moments at the UN” and that she “loved it, it was brilliant”.

Rudeness is not becoming.

It's probably better to give reasonable references and backing for claims made late at night UK time, when waking up and sounding off on number of threads.

The brusque nature of your comments get replied to in kind - quite straightforward.

I don't think that nanna8 was being rude. She made a valid comment. The rudeness was in the response.

🤔
In fact, your post to nanna8 is really rather rude.

This is a chat forum, posters can pass comment without having to research and provide references and verification for their comments.

I think your comments to nanna8 are very rude and dismissive.

I'm referring to a large number of posts over time in News and Politics, I'm aware of many nanna posts on other threads which are just like anyone else's and sometimes lovely.

I think that in this instance nanna8 was responding to DAR’s post at 12 ish today. Which was not, IMO, very polite…

(I don’t think she was responding to my post about it, which was meant to be a bit lighthearted. Well, I hope she wasn’t… 🤔)

Not easy guessing late at night, MaizieD...

No - I was responding to DAR this time but ,look, who really cares ? I am getting used to rude retorts these days, water off the proverbial. Just a different way of looking at things . Just glad it is online and not real life. Thanks for your support oreo and allira, appreciate it.

A different way of looking at things.
This is true of so much. If only people would consider the views of other people instead of dismissing them as of no consequence.

Here here ! I know sometimes I have a very different perspective being a non resident . Occasionally we get a very different slant on what is happening in the world though certain things are the same. I can't remember saying anything controversial at all recently, though . Best to smile and agree, can’t be stuffed arguing.

I am afraid that this potentially interesting thread is going down a rabbit hole. I am not getting at anybody, just saying.

Wyllow3 Sat 03-Jan-26 08:26:39

I'm sorry for my part in that. It was an ill judged moment of irritation at a bad moment* and I didn't mean to start this off.

I apologise wholeheartedly to nanna and hope we can get back on-topic.

*(On October 12th, in a religious setting, I was sexually assaulted in a religious setting: the effects, police, the organisation, still unresolved.
It has had a very long reach and has made me snappy with family and friends as well as sometimes online however hard I have tried to control it)

I am troubled if GB news continues to do this and be the voice of Trump
Other threads are currently picking apart his appalling New years Eve address. I hope they realise they have gone too far and don't repeat this sort of "import".

I t certainly appears on the political threads you must agree with 'clique' group. You must not disagree. If you dare to, it is at your peril lol!

It has nothing at all to do with agreeing with an imaginary clique. This spat was about posting manners.

I certainly don’t agree with the extreme views of some of the posters, someone has got to bring a sense of reality into the debate.

(Yes, it did really happen and it's been hell, and I have got support: we are going through Restorative Justice aka Community Justice paid for my the police after he admitted guilt - but interrupted by c mas - but the religious organisation flailing around unhelpfully as never ever been known before) so 3/4 weeks to go)

but please carry on with the topic, and I am so relieved people have understood

I don’t watch GB News, I feel (in my opinion) it’s biased.

I do know that there are some very good journalists involved in this production, some of whom do often give differing opinions and other view points, but, for me, GB links with Reform and people like Farage and Widdecombe, are a step to far for me.

Yes, there should be an investigation into any channel alleging showing “world exclusives” with powerful (even if bonkers) world leaders such as Trump.

Most “normal” humans do seem to feel that much of what Trump spouts is either lies or highly exaggerated nonsense.

I don't watch BBC news. It is obviously biased, and has been found to be so. Doctoring of the Trump speech, bias against Israel, perpetuating Hamas as the goodies, and refusing to name them as a terrorist organisation, which they are. For starters. GBnews any day, anyone left of centre is going to say different, and Ofcom are just that .

Maremia Sat 03-Jan-26 11:13:49

Hope things work out soon for you Wyllow.

Oreo Sat 03-Jan-26 11:20:59

I’m left of centre but still enjoy certain parts of GB News, it’s a more outspoken form of Breakfast or Good Morning tv in that it’s a mix of news and chat.
There are presenters I like and a few I don’t like and guests are any shade of political views.
