Former Prince Andrew has just been arrested in Norfolk

I wonder if he used his one phone call to speak to one of his middle eastern friends. I can't imagine any duty solicitors in Norfolk are well up on Misconduct in Public Office. A navy pension isn't going to pay for a team of fancy-shmancy lawyers. And if I were the King I would find it morally wrong to finance my errant brother's legal representation. So somebody needs to pay.

Attending a police station to answer questions is purely voluntary whereas if you are under arrest, you are taken to the police station and cannot refuse to attend. Also the former is often at an earlier stage in sn investigation, The police clearly thought that they had enough evidence to arrest. Also they wouldn’ have wanted to give him any warning. This happens to many arrested people and he, for once, is being treated like other citizens.

I don't think we do it the same way as the US, so the accusations would be the same. but naming names might show him to be willing to be helpfull and make a slight difference to the sentencing. Not a lot of difference, I hope.

Oreo, I think it is just the way things are done, as far as I am aware the police may ask someone to go to the police station to make a statement etc., but when arresting someone it is usually done at a person’s home or place of work, wherever they are at that time.

I’m wondering if pressure was put on the police to act. The prime minister was on tv earlier saying nobody is above the law, whoever you may be, which is quite right. He made a huge statement on the subject this morning.

Then, news broke that he’d been arrested. Perhaps they thought he was a fight risk as there was talk of him going to the Middle East like King Juan Carlos and dont forget Sarah Ferguson is already there. And Eugenie.

If he is charged and comes to trial, he would be tried by "a jury of his peers" as an ordinary citizen, not as a royal prince. His peers/equals as a prince would have been those of equal rank to him. His peers as an ordinary citizen would be - other ordinary citizens.

He hasn’t been arrested on anything to do with underage or trafficked women as some people seem to think.

The misconduct in public office, from when he was a trade envoy is likely to be the same charge Mandelson will face.

They are. That’s why I assumed it must be taking longer to piece the Mandelson evidence together, given the time lapse since they searched. Maybe it was thought Andrew would not cooperate with his property being searched so they had to do things differently, or maybe that they had more concrete evidence of his suspected wrongdoing?

Absolutely similar but may not be at the right stage yet for making an arrest. They have already executed a search warrant on PM and must be going through the huge amount of stuff they took away.

The BBC reports the King and Buckingham Palace didn’t know he was going to be arrested today, so it says. So I don’t think Princess Anne’s visit to Leeds is relevant, just coincidence.

An awful coincidence for her - it would have been arranged months and months and months ago.
