Yes, I should have added, 'in some denominations'.

As Allira said, ‘anointing’ does mean rubbed or smeared with oil, usually in a religious ceremony, but there is also ‘spiritual anointing by the Holy Spirit’, which is not a physical act, but being empowered by God to carry out a specific task or calling.

Maybe they forgot to wash it off.

Anyway - does Andrew go to confession and confess his sins, I wonder?

He hasn't done anything wrong. He has told us so 😇

Oh, sorry, I forgot.
Innocent until proven guilty.

But wasn't he born with original sin, like ordinary mortals?

I don't go to communion any more since I caught the most dreadful cold, probably from the communion cup.

^I remember going to a baptism of adults in a Baptist church many years ago.
They were totally immersed in a pool in the church.^
I remember that too. I listened to my cousin renouncing sins she didn’t even know the meaning of at that time.
Nothing to do with this thread but I liked the fact that their communion wine was served in individual glasses instead of having to share a cup with everyone else.

The Anglican Church baptises babies and then confirms some years later so they are members of the church and can take Holy Communion.

Christians believed that the 'original sin' of Adam and Eve was inherited by every child that was born. Baptism 'washed away' the original sin and, as Wwmk2 says, would enable entrance to heaven.

It was originally adults who were baptised, but I assume that infant baptism became so prevalent because they were extremely likely to die at a very early age.

All sorts of substances are used in these cleansing rituals. Water is common, but oil, herbs, smoke etc are also used in religious cleansing.

Baptism, especially infant baptism hardly constitutes “cleansing” does it?

It may not be seen like those who currently practice Christianity, but historically it certainly did, and that is where the practice originates. Babies were christened asap because no one wanted baby to die without the ability to enter heaven.

Cleansing with water etc is a practice seen in most religions from Islam, Judaism , Buddhism, ancient religions and Christianity. In fact you would be hard pushed to find a religion that doesn’t have a cleansing ritual.

Mollygo Thu 26-Feb-26 11:06:01

RC baptism evidently does involve oil, but KC is C of E and they use water.

Info dump...oil of chrism, a mixture of olive oil and balsam, is used at baptisms and confirmations.

Our children were baptised with water from the font, no oil involved at any point in the ceremony.

I think it's a Roman Catholic thing, GG13, though I'm not at all up to date with C of E current practice. It never happened in my church going days...

Latest is Charles got Andrew booted out as trade envoy, or so an email from Epstein implies. Brownie points if it is King Charles who warned against appointing him in the first place.

Casdon Wed 25-Feb-26 22:32:15

I hope so, babies and polluted water is not a good combination.

Allira Wed 25-Feb-26 22:17:41

It's probably pure British spring water really.

Casdon Wed 25-Feb-26 22:15:32

I bet the River Jordan is even more polluted than rivers in the UK though.

Royal babies being so special are christened with water brought specially from the river Jordan because well because ……

Maybe because, as we have just seen on “Dirty Business” UK water is polluted with untreated sewage or agricultural fertiliser?

Just catching up with it 🤮

Anoint meaning:

Smear or rub with oil, typically as part of a religious ceremony.
