Future of the Monarchy

I’ve read and listened to a lot of comment and questions concerning the future existence of the monarchy.

Every commentator believes that this is the most serious issue that the monarchy has faced in recent history, and that is existence may well be under threat - not immediately but as information trickles out over the next few months and years.

I do think that our demographic on GN and attitude towards the monarchy is not typical - and looking at the younger generation I suspect the monarchy has a lot more to worry about, because our values of fairness, meritocracy etc simply doesn’t stand up in a monarchical political system.

I think it will be far worse if justice is not seen to be done regarding Windsor, and I will not be at all surprised if the next generation will sees an end to the monarchy, and certainly young George will never be king.

I wouldn't think so Maremia but they can only hold a suspect for so long without charges. I expect they're still pouring over the mountains of paperwork etc.

Does this mean that the police investigation is now over?

Tuliptree Sat 21-Feb-26 22:59:39

Brutal photos in the press Annie? Well I never. Our press doing that? I’m shocked, shocked I tell you . Whatever next? For goodness sake.

He has not been charged as Anniebach said.

However, Anniebach, I think anyone who had been subjected to his arrogance over the years might well have felt a little satisfaction at seeing him chastened in that photograph
Sorry, I do know no charges have been made.

I am finding so much hatred for the man, sorry but.the photograph is brutal, I don’t like man or beast being humiliated and this man is certainly humiliated, more anger about him being part of the royal family and wealth.

I have doubts if we will never know the truth of the police investigation, if found innocent will there marches , “we want blood so give up blood” such hatred

I’m neither of these things. I’d hazard a guess I’m better informed than you are.

Of course 😁

You are mistaken or exaggerating

As I say - let us have full access by the public to all these things and there will be no doubt. The secrecy surrounding royal finance and the blurred lines between what is public or private property should not exist. Reduce the numbers down who access these unbelievable privileges and let those who remain actually work for it.

I never thought I would feel this way about Andrew but the photograph of him in the back of the car that is doing the rounds made me feel sorry for him. He looks so shocked and defeated like a cornered animal.

Don't get me wrong, I am still utterly disgusted by the way he has behaved and lied but I can't help but feel a little pang of sympathy.

I whole heartedly agree, Indigo8 - it looked to me as though he had fallen backwards. The redeye left in was mischievous.

This photographer syndicated his photograph, ensuring
that it was on the front page of all newspapers.

I don‘t feel sorry for Andrew, but this picture seemed
way below the belt and not sporting.

“You don’t kick a man when he’s down”

Allira Sat 21-Feb-26 22:25:11

Didn't seem so so hence the explanation.

Please ignore if you know more about the procedure after being questioned by the police than me.

StoneofDestiny Sat 21-Feb-26 22:21:57

I don't think you understand

The police escort was probably to avoid public disturbance, a breach of the peace or other reasons which we do not know

Thank you - I fully understand 🙄

I suspect, could be wrong, that the people who like the monarchy still do, and those that dont, dont.

I presume[could be wrong] that it will continue.

I suspect you’re absolutely right. Confirmation bias is a wonderful thing. In a way that makes these threads either a waste of time or just a useful vehicle for venting.

I'm ambivalent. It's allowed.

If they want to give it up, I'm happy, but I doubt we'd notice much in the way of financial savings.

I think the future generations might be relieved.

Who are the brother and sisters, uncles, aunts etc who are paid to attend functions?

Allowances, wardrobe, transport allowance paid to them with the best seats in the house. Hardly a hardship to attend is it? And this ‘justifies’ the title ‘working royal’ that comes with large allowances, housing and staff.

You are mistaken or exaggerating

His comeuppance for ?

Suspicion of misconduct in a public office.

No charges ?

No. But suspicion and embarrassment, and an escort home to avoid public disturbance, which Stone of Destiny seems unable to understand.

I’ve no sympathy for him or his family who
have known what was going on for years. My only question was how many people after getting questioned by the police get a 2 vehicle escort home? Most of the public would have to call a taxi or get a bus!

Why are republicans so adamant that they are absolutely right? Intransigent?
The vehemence really is quite worrying.

I don't have a problem with the photo being taken and published except to say I found the leaving of the red eye was deliberate to make him look more evil or something. Surely any self respecting photographer would have removed it, even I can manage that with computer wizardry.

Allira Sat 21-Feb-26 22:09:21

Oh dear.
I think you need to do some sums and estimates.

First sum: What do you think a Presidential system would cost?

StoneofDestiny Sat 21-Feb-26 22:07:05

As for someone up thread thinking we are inane enough to believe all the money from reducing the royals would go into solving issues with the NHS! Where it goes will be for our government to decide. What we will stop doing is providing round the clock security on properties that lie empty for months every year. We won’t be maintaining them - the new owners will.
As for suggesting we need to know more history - many of us do! Suggesting we look back over royal contribution to our country over the centuries will only strengthen the case of abolition!

I found the way to deal with the photo was to imagine how anyone would look caught in a camera flash trying to crouch down in a car after a long stressful day
