Hypothetically, if these 2 were officially charged, could they take a plea deal to avoid a trial?

I'm not sure how it works on your side of the pond, but would suspect it is similar to a degree.

This is an interesting development.

Assuming they both are charged and found guilty, it would be a PR disaster if PM got a harsher sentence than AMW. The charge is very vague, and as I understand it there are few, if any, precedents to fall back on for sentencing guidelines, so a lot will come down to discretion. I know the maximum sentence is life imprisonment (at His Majesty's pleasure, no less), but 'misconduct' covers a multitude of sins.

I wonder what's coming next.

Plus the fact that this case ( if it comes to court) will be heard under common law

I think it must be further ahead than Andrew, because the evidence was collected from Mandelson’s homes a couple of weeks ago! He may be charged on the basis of what they found.

I suppose they have to gather, and then assess the provability of the evidence.

Maremia Mon 23-Feb-26 18:07:30

Think that's the same wording as the AMW arrest.

I just felt - about time too, inevitable, proper, let's stop the speculation and get to evidence and so on, no surprise.

I feel a bit cynical about it all.

Certainly Andrew charging massages to the taxpayer as "expenses" is nauseating, & Mandy shouldn't have given Epstein the heads-up.

They both knew it was against rules so why did they do it? Almost certainly because "everyone else does it" & I don't believe every powerful player will behave in this way, but I imagine a helluva lot of them do and if their private emails were forensically excavated from decades ago, there wouldn't be many composed faces.

I do not agree that these two did what they did ^ because every one else was doing it^, although that is the motive for some people.

These two did it because they both had an overwhelming sense of their own importance. Andrew because he was a Royal Prince and the Son of The ueen of England and also, he aspired to have a standard of living that he could not afford.

Mandelson did it because he prided himself as being so much more clever and devious than anyone around him. To be fair, other people said the same. He has been known as 'The Prince of Darkness' since the mid 1980s. Even when he was found out taking loans from someone his department was investigating and other revelations he still had this overwheening confidence in his own cleverness and deviance.

A long time coming

Too long - but it's given them more time to shred documents hasn't it ? Cynical, moi ?

Good. If Andrew has been charged so should Mandelson.

Casdon Mon 23-Feb-26 17:25:00

I don’t think Andrew has been charged.

I'm not really surprised considering the current climate.

It was only a matter of time really.
