The thing I do not like about the BBC or at least the ‘news’ channel is that they constantly say how good they are and how they are not there to tell you what to think. They then flash past pictures of their various reporters overseas. Over and over and over again. I had to turn it off because it occurred every 5 or 6 minutes and there was actually almost no news. I assume the Americans must have blocked access ? Very boring.

Never thought I’d hear this
(130 Posts)I am on a cruise with a lot of people from different countries at the moment. I was having a swim when I came across a small group of American women loudly extolling the virtues of ‘ wonderful Donald Trump’ who is ‘ a decisive businessman, just what we needed’ Strewth and stone the crows, I swam off quicksmart, but it made me think how very differently some of us look at things. Maybe they are right but not from my point of view of view.

Absolutely with you on the BBC, M0nica. I feel if those on the left think that it's too right wing, and those on the right think that it's too left wing, then it's probably doing a good job.

I agree!
In the same vein, I remember reading and hearing people say that the previous government - under Rishi Sunak - was a socialist government
??? I can only assume they meant that it just wasn't right-wing-enough for their liking. But then, people do have different interpretations of socialism. Some appear to think that a Tory doing anything that doesn't align with the Genghis Khan School of Conservatism is a raging woke Leftie.

Dickens because the BBC is neutral and those on the left and right define neutrality as meaning as 'thinking the same as me'

This is the man who is "leading" the western world.
Add in that he is a criminal and a misogynist - what hope is there?

I was having a lift from a friend yesterday and there was also another woman whom I did not know in the car. Talk turned to the news and how depressing it was. I said that I look at the headlines each day to keep up to speed. This woman said she looks at the news on X as it is more balanced. She does not like the BBC as it is too left wing and who would still criticise Trump if he found a cure for cancer.
I was gobsmacked and couldn't resist saying that if one's dad said half the things Trump did then you would ring the doctor.
It is chilling that so many are unable to recognise mental illness when they see it and are happy for this lunatic to have our fates in his hands.

I've heard this frequently and am genuinely puzzled by it, as well as the claims that it's too right wing.
If we are talking about the BBC News channel specifically it does, to me, seem fairly middle-of-the-road. The reporting of incidents is factual and comments / observations by high-profile politicians or other major players are often reported verbatim.
Their opinion-pieces are, to my mind, detectably left leaning, but only just so.
Why do those on both Left and Right see it as leaning too much in the opposite direction?

I'd not hope to meet congenial acquaintances on one of those ugly gigantic cruise ships.
Not all cruise liners are huge 🤔
As it seems you've never been, I'm not sure how you can judge.
My late friend went on a cruise all by herself. She was a warm hearted person, easy to talk to. She was treated rudely by a fellow passenger. I was so sorry for her.

To meet congenial people, you have to be congenial.
If you base your decision on something you’ve never done, but only seen on television it’s hard to know whether you or they would be seen as congenial.
In cruise or non cruise situations, no one likes everyone they meet.
That is true. I am uncongenial to strangers especially strangers who appear to enjoy what I dislike or disapprove of.

And yet it is possible. We’re still in touch with two couples we met on such a cruise. I’m glad they saw us as congenial acquaintances.
It is possible just as your say. I was describing my personal tastes ----the little I have seen on TV of life on a cruise ship leads me to believe the company on offer would not suit me.
I don’t think there are any British on this cruise and anyway they are always polite, never rude in my experience.

My mother-in-law made friends on cruises occasionally and met up with a couple if she visited their "home" area.
It is obviously possible.
Maybe only if you yourself are congenial.

Have never been on a cruise, Allira. Guessing British?
No!
Mostly Americans, very few British.
It was a long time ago.
We went on another one with mainly Australians and some people from the Far East. Very friendly.

There are some noticeably rude people on this cruise and I know it sounds racist ( well I suppose it is ) but they are all from the same country. No prizes for guessing .. I think maybe it is just a cruiser tendency because we have met many more of that nationality off the cruise who are lovely people.
Which nationality? Genuinely curious.
Need you ask?
They seemed to be split down the middle into rude and pushy and really lovely on a cruise we went on in the Caribbean years ago. 😀
Probably worse now.
