Should we pay kids to go to school?
Reform UK’s Richard Tice allegedly failed to pay £100,000 in corporation tax
So, I really don’t know much about this Green Party Leader, and intend to try and find some unbiased intel around him.
However, I have read some Grannetters absolutely slating him, so I’m going to ask all of you for some further info about him, what you like and don’t like about him and your general views on The Green Party, happy to read the negatives but has anyone got anything positive to say about them?
I’ve not read too much about how they plan to pay for their key policies, other than taxing millionaires and billionaires very highly.
I’ve read about fair and sustainable housing, making work pay, access to high quality education, a great NHS system and support for the Human Rights Act.
Other than the “how” of achieving all this, these don’t seem terrible policies.
Much further down in their priorities are things around decriminalising certain drugs, and legalising cannabis.
If you want a sensible debate around this then there are pros and cons of doing this and our biggest problem issue around drugs currently are 1) duff mixed stuff sold by gangs and 2) misuse of perfectly legal drugs such as Alcohol and prescription pain killers such as Tramadol.
Of course, a huge part of their manifesto is sustainability and environmental, some great stuff here, as well as some I don’t feel are ever going to be achievable, such as net zero, I much prefer to discuss mitigation and ways of making energy, air travel etc cleaner.
I know many of you despise him due to his stance on trans women, and I agree it’s important for women to have safe places, just as it’s important to protect the rights of all groups of people, including, but not limited to gay men and the disabled.
What is it that you feel is so terribly wrong with The Green Party? It’s not my party of choice, but I feel many under 35’s might lean towards Greens rather than Restore and Reform.

Petra, I know cannabis use doesn't but it does have other health implications, particularly the stronger stuff. That said, it wouldn't bother me as much to have cannabis use legalised because I don't like the current ambiguous use.
The Greens are not just talking about Cannabis though so I won't vote for them. Having lost my brother to the use of drugs, I want drug addiction treatment revolutionised but not by making them legal.“
I am truly sorry about your brother and can understand your stance.
However, I was only talking about cannabis and it’s my understanding it’s only cannabis has been legalised in both Canada and USA and is regulated and taxed.
I absolutely agree that we (UK) need many more drug rehab centres and also residential rehabs too, not just for illegal drugs, but to incorporate painkiller addiction and alcohol.

The thought of Farage and Polanski being allowed anywhere near forming a Government or being part of a coalition fills me with dread.
That would awful but also very very unlikely as their policies are polar opposites.
I don’t think it was meant that together they would form a coalition 😁
I’m uneasy about legalising cannabis. It’s usually smoked with tobacco, smoking is incredibly bad for our health.
It’s also difficult to buy anything but strong weed and dependance can be a serious issue.
The negative impact of cannabis on developing brains seems confirmed by research.
Legalising it somehow minimises known concerns
Cossy harder drugs have been decriminalised in some areas. It was quite horrific in some places.
The Greens [I believe] want to close down zoos unless they're used to return animals to the wild. What are peoples views on this?Twycross, while being open to the public, have always been open to the public and their breeding programme is very important. I think some of their views are getting too extreme.
I’m not keen on zoos but they do some good conservation
Following the Green agenda, my spaniel and lab would be returned to the wild. They would definitely prefer to remain in comfortable captivity
Currently listening to interview with Zach Polanski on BBC radio 4 - "Political thinking" with Nick Robinson. I'm finding it interesting as I knew little about him. Probably available on Sounds.
I listened as well Farmor15. Nick Robinson is a skilled interviewer. I feel I know Polanski better as a result. I was interested in Polanski’s explanation of his name change. I broadened my understanding of his personality and the central beliefs that guide him.
My jury is still hung 🌞 but I can understand more easily his appeal to the young people I know who have previously been Labour voters,
At least Zack is banging on about the effect Brexit has had on our economy.

No, I didn't mean a coalition between the 2 of them. That would be the stuff of nightmares!!!

I read an excellent article recently on this very subject. A young GP was becoming increasingly concerned with the number of people he was seeing who were long-term cannabis users. So many of them were showing schizophrenic tendencies when they had not been like this before regular cannabis use. Research is showing alterations to the brain with prolonged usage of a drug that many see as recreational so therefore harmless. 2 of my daughters went to New York last December. Neither of them will go again because cannabis has been legalised there and apart from cannabis shops on every street and people approaching then to buy some there was that cloying, sickly stench hanging over the city. I would like to see all illegal drugs become Class A unless for genuine medical cases.
Thanks Sarnia for the info from the young GP. I’ve seen mental health problems develop in young cannabis users in my work and personal life. We are learning more about its impact on developing brains, as well as understanding brains continue to develop into early twenties.
The evidence doesn’t support legalising imo
I agree, Sarnia and Iam64. I have a cousin who went down the cannabis/schizophrenia route as a teen. My late brother also had a psychotic episode through cannabis at 16 years old. It is also a gateway drug to harder drugs. To be fair though, as I understand it, the stronger Skunk has far more serious consequences for the brain.
I read an article about Schizophrenia recently which looked at what predisposes you to it. There is a new theory that as a child, a particular virus which is just like a cold enters the system and predisposes you to Schizophrenia and you need a secondary trigger for it to become a problem. The trouble is, unless you could test everybody for that virus, you wouldn't know it was waiting to be triggered by external factors in to the full blown condition. It would answer why some people appear to be affected by Cannabis and others don't.

And this applies to many others out there at the moment!
So sad that many older folk think because he’s different Hes no use. When you think of the parade of idiots and clowns through Downing Street over the years I,d be happy to see someone with a different view in that job…not Farage as Hes Boris on steroids ready to sell everything to the highest bidder and the tories of both red and blue have ramped the debts up to trillions …a lot to do with spending on things that haven,t Ben completed ore en started .HS2,Boris,s garden bridge, ships that never made it past trials a whole load of tanks unsuitable for war or anything because they don’t function. Then there’s the billions given to mates during Covid.
If you think Polensky is worse than all this…..and there are more costly examples, maybe you need therapy.
Britain aka England has wrecked the place … thanks!

It does make me wonder what attracts some of these individuals to politics in the first place.
They like the sound of their own voice, they are good actors, they have an unassailable belief that they are right (ie arrogance) and others are wrong?
Or do they truly believe they have the best interests of the country and its people at heart?
So sad that many older folk think because he’s different Hes no use.
I don't think any of us 'older folk' have said anything like that.
People have expressed concerns about some of his policies, which is not the same thing at all, and whilst some 'younger folk' like him there will be those who don't.
Polensky
Polanski?

We might think the same of you supporting someone who has policies we don't want but we wouldn't be so rude as to say it, paddyAnn54! I think Green at a local level are well worth voting for but the policies the National Level are promoting I have very sound reasons for not supporting and the only therapy needed here is for the death of my brother if their policies are enacted.
I agree with the legalisation of drugs, I too have a close family association with drug addiction and I would far rather that this scourge was subject to control as opposed to criminalisation which has so far done nothing at all to solve the problem.

I wouldn't vote for the local Greens here as they are hypocritical, wanting to build hundreds of houses on environmentally sensitive land.

You really want the state to act as drug dealers which is what would be necessary? Polanski thinks that legalising even class A drugs will enable people to have a 'good time' without risk. Of course he doesn't use drugs or alcohol himself, far too sensible.
Vapes were brought in to help those addicted to nicotine to get it without the risks from tobacco. Now young people who have never smoked start vaping, which isn't without its own health risks. There's evidence that some are now progressing from vapes to actual tobacco.
Legalising all drugs will not discourage drug taking and would more likely encourage it. People don't generally start their drug taking journey with crack cocaine, progressing to that via the more usual entry route of cannabis. With Zack's help they could jump in at the highest level and cut out the middle man. What an improvement!

I too agree
Yes, having worked within a drug rehab, I have seen first hand the damage “modified” and “cut” drugs can do.
