Trump makes crass comment about Pearl Harbour to Japanese PM

For anyone who hasn’t caught this is with a watch, just google it. The Japanese PM asks the President why Japan and other allies were not informed of the impending war with Iran. Trump went on as usual about it being a surprise attack then turned to the Japanese PM and said it was like Pearl Harbour, inasmuch as Japan didn’t tell the US about that surprise attack, as if it was a joke.
The PM looked mortified.

Which was exactly why the Japanese used that tactic at Pearl Harbour.

Oreo Fri 20-Mar-26 10:00:05

….but JenniferEccles is right, it was a daft question by the Japan PM to ask in a televised setting.
That was something to ask in private if he felt that he had to ask.
The element of surprise was key.

A crass statement indeed. If Trump made a similar comment to King Charles I have no doubt the King would deal with it in his calm diplomatic manner. I expect he has been the recipient of many strange comments in his life.

Disgusting. awful behaviour to Japans PM. One feels there is nothing left to shock us and then something further does.

Here is the footage of exactly what he said from a New York Times clip

Am I surprised he came out with a statement like that, no not really, after all they did the very same thing to the American Navy. Killing over two thousand.
Back in the day, the Japanese army were a cruel bunch.
The bomb was dropped to get Japan to surrender as there was no stopping them.
Do I agree with trump saying that, no I certainly don’t, as it doesn’t help anyone.

Trump is unable to answer questions without insulting the questioner.
He seems to be focused on alienating all his allies.

Is a bizarre approach. He has the diplomacy of a sledge hammer. But I imagine it fits with his ‘strong man’ image, a prevalent trend in this new world order, where might is right and international relations has become a matter of muscle power rather than dialogue.

So are you a Trump fan Jennifereccles a Trumpette ?

Well it was a daft question, wasn’t it?
Of course Trump wanted the element of surprise before he attacked Iran.

Yep, the best way to wage an illegal war where there is no imminent threat to the US is to jump right in there without warning. And of course why warn the innocent civilians in Tehran, one of the most densely populated cities in the region so that they can at least get out of harms way??
There is a little thing called international law that is decidedly against such damaging and deadly surprises.

Maremia Fri 20-Mar-26 06:44:33

Yes a surprise to most people, as there was no imminent danger to the USA, and therefore no reason for the attack.

And look what resulted from that surprise attack and how it all ended 🤔

MayBee70 Thu 19-Mar-26 22:57:29

Just read a White House thread on Facebook and everyone was saying how she adores him because she hugged him when they met. There was footage of it but it seems very un Japanese to me.

Have known a fair few US presidents - not personally ofc I don’t move in such circles thank goodness - and Trump makes Nixon look honest and Dubya look like a giant intellect. He is a caricature of a president, an amalgam of David Brent in the office and Basil Fawlty in Fawlty towers.
But it all ceases to be funny when Trump starts playing war games with good buddy Bibi and actual innocent people start to die.
Somebody somewhere has to try to stop him before he does yet more irreparable damage. How this is done I have no idea.
But hey thanks all you American voters who gave the world this dangerous and demented individual.
Democracy is a wonderful thing, until it isn’t.

On X, Eric Trump said "one of the best responses to a journalist ever". Infantile comment.

nanna8 Thu 19-Mar-26 21:45:12

Oh , it just gets worse. The trouble is ,he is surrounded by sycophants who encourage him and applaud him and feed his ego ( or should I say psychophants? )

I thought Trump’s shot about Pearl Harbour was well aimed but he spoiled it by going on a ramble - a bit like a comedian having to explain his joke to a weary audience after it’s missed the mark.

First rule of diplomacy
"Don't talk about the war"!

We went to see Fawlty Towers at the theatre last night. This reminds me of "we didn't start it" "yes you did, you invaded Poland!" Substitute for "well you surprised us with Pearl Harbour". As Iam64 says, Trump is an ignorant fool.

At least we could laugh at Basil as he wasn't real (and a stuffed moose had fallen on his head, after all).

Iam64 Thu 19-Mar-26 21:09:49

Well put there MollyNew

It’s like jaws, except not just when they thought it was safe to go back in the water, more just when they thought he couldn’t get any worse, then he did - Bigly

He’s a dangerous, impulsive, ignorant fool. The Republicans need to Do Something, hopefully in conjunction with the Generals. A coup

MollyNew Thu 19-Mar-26 20:29:10

He is an ignoramus and a dangerous one, at that.

Why am I laughing; it's probably hysteria.

I imagine him like Basil Fawlty making Nazi jokes to the German Chancellor.

Fallingstar and Smileless Yes.

Surely someone can do something about him?
Involuntary commitment? Impeachment?
Please?

Fallingstar Thu 19-Mar-26 19:56:32

Smileless2012

If he can say that to the PM of Japan, what might he say to the King?

Indeed.
The mind boggles.

Do you have a link.

It was on the main ITV Evening News, probably on BBC too.

Excruciating.
Whatever next?
