Epsom alleged rape investigation - police conclude that 'no sexual offence occurred'

Police have closed this investigation, some thought the alleged rape was perpetrated by asylum seekers, the rumours triggered violent disorder including criminal damage to local hotels and other property, five people were arrested.
It was concluded by the police and girl reporting the rape, she had in fact incurred a head injury after a night out and made a confused report.
I guess she won’t be prosecuted for wasting police time.

She has given consent for the police to talk about it apparently so that's good.

Here's the item on the BBC:

A good news story really.
I do hope the woman is pleased (even if the whole thing was traumatic).

Casdon Fri 24-Apr-26 08:21:27

I did think good on her for allowing her full story to be told. I hope locals don’t give her a hard time now they have been made to look foolish for overreacting before the detail of what happened was available.

I think the heading for this thread should be changed. It gives the impression that it is a thread to promulgate the original accusation, so to be avoided.

NotSpaghetti Fri 24-Apr-26 08:26:38

Yes, I agree Casdon, I thought she was brave too.

Cossy Fri 24-Apr-26 08:33:43

Well done her, I do hope she wasn’t assaulted sexually but I’m guessing there would have been a rape kit used.

Rapes are committed by men, irrespective of where they’re from.

I don’t believe for even a moment that the majority of asylum seekers are rapists and murderers. I don’t believe the majority of men are either.

This link opens a BBC story dated 11th April. It clearly isn’t the story featured in the OP. Is a more up to date one available?

I also agree with MOnica, the thread title is very misleading, especially as I first saw it below the thread about the convicted AS rapists… it looked like a further anti AS story…

I hate people like this. Crying wolf spoils it for those who are genuine.

TerriBull Fri 24-Apr-26 09:50:23

I followed the story, not something I expected to read about my home town where I grew up. Where even on Derby Day, we were often warned "be careful a lot of peculiar people about" but I hadn't read anything quite like this story before. So good to know it wasn't the event as originally reported. It's really hard to comment, if the young woman in question had some sort of head injury that maybe precipitated "false memory syndrome"

However, simultaneously we have the Brighton rape trial concluding, which does point to yet another "actual" gang rape. Far too many committed by people we give refuge to. Of course we have our home grown rapists as people like to point out, but that doesn't in anyway mitigate the horror of these not infrequent sexual crimes being carried out by those we are giving sanctuary to. If anything it focuses the mind on why are we adding to our own criminal element when we have insufficient jails in the first place.

I'm not sure whether they will even be deported. Or at least one of them probably won't be, I think was handed a death sentence for a murder he'd committed in his country. If that's the case he won't be. It also always begs the question, they want asylum here, but those who commit such crimes have zero respect for the laws and people of this country.

Casdon Fri 24-Apr-26 09:54:35

I think your final two paragraphs belong on the Brighton thread, TerriBull, this is a different scenario. If one of the asylum seeker involved there had committed murder in his home country, I think people on that thread would want to discuss it?

TerriBull Fri 24-Apr-26 09:58:13

Yes! I see your point Casdon, I'll comment over there.

We do NOT want people coming here as criminals, this mustn’t cloud our judgement though of those innocent Asylum Seekers who seek asylum here.

TerriBull Fri 24-Apr-26 10:04:45

I don't disagree with that! I'll go over to the Brighton thread given the latest statement with regards to the non crime in Epsom.

MaizieD Fri 24-Apr-26 10:41:09

For those like me (who has been out of the country for 10 days) the story being discussed here is this:

How about 'Allegation of rape by asylum seekers in Epsom was unfounded and made in error says the woman who reported it'

Or something like that?

Oreo Fri 24-Apr-26 12:20:27

Am glad for the woman that she wasn’t raped, it’s a strange thing to think when maybe she simply staggered, fell and hit her head.
Maybe she remembered being followed by a few men and just assumed it?
Maybe she has withdrawn the allegation from pressure from someone?

NotSpaghetti Fri 24-Apr-26 17:56:56

Thanks Maizie I had several pages open. No excuse. Should have been more careful.
Here's the ITV one (if I haven't put you all off!)
Apologies

It seems the woman left the nightclub alone, staggered and fell over injuring her head, seemingly unconscious or dazed was worried that she had been assaulted, with the Brighton case in her mind gave the police a confused story.
With no witnesses and no evidence of anything other than falling over and injuring her head, but the lynch mob had already gathered.
