Locally you have to apply for a postal vote well before a month before an election. But once you are on the list...
So sad I’ve nearly finished last Jilly Cooper
Complete unknown - Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan
How did you vote and why today
Obviously some will choose to keep that to themselves. But I went to the polls feeling very angry today.
Local government elections are meant to be about local issues, but inevitably they do reflect what is happening nationally, but this year I feel national issues completely hi-jacked the whole local government process, Todays local elections are being seen and have been treated in the media as a proxy national elelction to confirm or undermine our current governments legitimacy.
The papers are full of long analysese of this govenment, what it has not done since being elected, how long Keir Starmer can stay as PM, the back biting and infighting between contenders for his job. Local issues, what matters to us in our towns villages and rural areas. schools, potholes rubbish collection , who cares about that when we can have another photoshoot of KS, or another story about Angela Rayner
Anyway, i was so fed up I deserted the party I have voted for for the last 60 plus years and gave all my votes to the independents, one only 18. They seemed to be the only people in this whole shamble that cares about us, the people living in these different council areas and write to us about local issues.

Im just resding how easy it is to vote on the "that was a farce" thread.
Not sure who Potter is (a new MS?)

For us in Wales it is as important as a general election today, and the first time we have a full PR system. I voted tactically, as because of the way the new system works a few votes could make all the difference.
The new Senedd will cost taxpayers far more as the number of members increases this time by 60%.
A newly-expanded Senedd will need a budget increase of almost £19m next year, according to the body responsible for the institution's day-to-day running.

Where is this extra money sourced?
The Senedd members voted for this themselves (of course they did).
Why was there not a referendum or at least extensive consultation?
Are these new 36 members really needed?I’m not sure why you’re asking me Allira? Parts of it have been extensively consulted on though, I can remember submitting comments regarding the new constituency make-up, which I disagreed with, as I do with the full PR system we now have. None of my gripes would prevent me voting though.
It was a rhetorical question.
A complete and Potter waste of money when services in Wales are under-performing.
There wasn’t any elections in my part of the country
I voted tactically to keep Reform out.
MissAdventure
I can barely walk with a frame currently.
The holes in the paths and roads here are so bad, it would take a herculean effort to go and vote.
Voting by post is easy and straightforward.

It was the hardest vote ever for me today, tempted to spoil the voting slip. Knew who I didn't want 100 percent and am dreading seeing the results tomorrow because if it is how I think, we are finished.
Even if you vote for a neighbour you like and think will do a good job they will still be constrained to vote along party lines.

Yes, but what has all you say got to do with LOCAL elections, where the issues should be roads and schools. etc
No voting here.
I sometimes vote for Independents.
Not sure what I would have done this time.
Fortunately, our Local Elected Officers, it seems to make not one jot of difference who is running things.
So would have felt I had a free run at who to vote for. If you see what I mean.

No voting in my constituency. But if I had needed to vote I would have voted Labour. I still support this government but, if they decide to overthrow the PM I shall be leaving the party. Someone, somewhere wants a Reform government. It isn’t for the good of this country or the people in it but they are going to benefit from it in some ( financial) way.

This is why I was so angry today, because central government politcs has completely hijacked the LOCAL elections this year.
MawsRosie
I voted the way I always do.
Secretly.
Obviously some will choose to keep that to themselves.
First sentence in the OP.
I voted tactically as well.
I voted for the best candidate.
I have just been watching candidates who cannot even speak English. OMG. 😱
Mine was a postal vote and I voted for the lot in power because they have been spending money wisely, and I think have done a good job. Unfortunately I think Reform may sail through.
I’m with FGT2 as well. My mum would be so angry if one of her descendants didn’t exercise our right to vote - I’ve drummed the same message into my children too.
I did vote in the last general election and faced the consequences of my vote. That wasn't much fun.

Tactically, some time ago, with a postal vote.
I'm with FGT
Same parental message that those who dont vote, if they possibly can, face the consequences of who does get in. Sometimes it's the "least of evils", sometimes its with commitment and enthusiasm, sometimes its tactical.
No elections in my area but I would have voted for the best party for local issues which probably would be different from a General Election
I agree M0nica local elections should be about local issues not about such issues as whether you think Keir Starmer is doing a good job, like Nigel Farage or think Zac Polenski is a nutter.
I only wish I had known more about the individual candidates and what they proposed to do if they were elected regardless of which party they represented.
In our immediate area there is a very local issue that the independents have been extremely active about - we’ve been bombarded with leaflets, and one of the ‘traditional’ parties has reacted with what to me looks like a dirty trick, or at least deliberately misleading information.
Let’s just say I’m going to be very interested to see the results!
Looks as though the independents will do well!
It’s sad that so many potentially good candidates evidently feel unable to ally themselves to any national party. I don’t know how we get round this because local government is important and it’s important that it works well.
Under present arrangements what can Independents actually achieve once elected? Very little in the way of formulating policy.
It’s a mess.
