John Healey struck me as exactly the kind of person we need to keep our country safe.
I am afraid of the present government and wonder what they will bungle next.

John Healy has resigned as Defence Secretary
(256 Posts)…….due to the defence spending plans. Good for him, maybe it will make those with the purse strings think again. Though I doubt it.

Miliband defies Starmer on spending cuts: the Energy Secretary was (said to be) pushing back against demands to find savings of at least one per cent within his department
A Whitehall source suggested Mr. Miliband would undermine the defence investment effort if he refused to cut net zero. (DT 11/6/26.)
Why are Ministers allowed to thwart the Prime Minister's intentions?
The prime minister should show he is in charge by asking Ed Milliband to make cuts, resign or be sacked.
Or.
simply an appreciation and love of the classics.
🤣 😂

Meandrogrog, there is interesting 'debate' online about how intelligent is Johnson.
Some say his classical referencing creates a superficial impression of depth.
Exactly -using classical references when you know full well that the majority of people won’t ‘get’ them has several explanations - you’re a supercilious up yourself spoilt entitled git with a massive inferiority complex. or you’re not bright enough to explain an idea clearly . Probably both in fact

You couldn’t make it up! But KS seems blissfully unaware.🤣
You can say that again, Primrose
He amazes me actually. It doesn't seem to matter what is happening, he's just there, in his zombie government, happy to carry on.
I'm wondering if he's heard the chants from the English football fans.
Or Starmer's Song. Heading for number 1 on numerous streaming platforms.
He's not doing the Labour Party any good at all.Do you mean this one?

BRilliant!

Brilliant video Primrose53. It would be funny if it wasn't so very true

I think you only find out whether or not a PM is in it for personal gain by their behaviour afterwards. Eg Truss going to America to support Trump. Johnson making a fortune giving silly talks to support more of his many children. Sunak on the back benches; I really thought he’d just walk away from politics but he hasn’t. Good on him. I can honestly say that I don’t think Keir will use his premiership to make a fortune after he leaves office.
Can you give me some examples of silly talks please as I would like to look them up. I thought he was a very intelligent man so would be interested in your thoughts.
KS is not blissfully unaware. He knows exactly what is happening and doesn't care. All he is interested in is staying in power. Personal political power, not government power.
Fortunately many voters realise that Farage is 'not what the country wants or needs'.
In just shy of 2 years, Starmer has made at least 15 major U turns, had more than 20 significant policy reversals and has had 21 politicians resign (6 in the last month) under his tenure. And still he insists that he's the best person to lead the country into the next election. This is not "duty"; it's hubris, his lust for power and sheer inability to recognise that he's just not what the country wants or needs. The longer he remains, the more certain that Reform will win the next election.

Brilliant, I have not seen it before, I think it’s very clever and very true…🙄
Thanks for the link from Primrose…

At thee moment he is more interested in keeping his hands on the levers of power than serving either the country or all its voters.
They say power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. In Keir Starmer that saying is being proven.

So Keir Starmer has lost his Defence Minister because there is no defence.
Corruption Minister Tulip Siddiq was corrupt so she’s gone.
Homeless Minister Rushanara Ali made people homeless so she’s gone.
Angela Rayner, Housing Minister had to go because she had too many houses!!
You couldn’t make it up! But KS seems blissfully unaware.🤣
Re Sarcasm as opposed to satire.
Have you ever felt the sting of a sarcastic comment during a conversation? Has it left you feeling belittled yet without any real ability to defend yourself?
That is how sarcasm works: it’s when the speaker says one thing but means the opposite in order to ridicule or mock or belittle the listener/reader.^
It is verbal aggression as opposed to physical and the criticism or contempt is clearly felt by the recipient but it may be so well cloaked as to make it hard to respond to.

I agree with you MayBee. There’s more than one way to fight your corner and Dan Jarvis has never come across as a 30 pieces of silver man or desperate. But rather a brave man who has served his country. Indeed his incredibly impressive military career doesn’t quite match the profile of a man who would hound the troops and other unspeakable acts of treachery and desperation. I respect him in the way I’ve always respected Tobias Ellwood, Ben Wallace and Tom Tugendhat.. I think rubbishing men ( and women) who have served their countries well and bravely is pretty shabby in fact. So let’s see what he does now.
I agree.
Dan Jarvis has had an incredible military career. A very brave man who has served his country well - to suggest he has taken ‘30 pieces of silver’ is insulting in the extreme.
He’s a straight talking Yorkshire man who is the MP for my home town of Barnsley. Good on him!
Who’s “calling you out” Tt?
I only pointed out that you only said it was satire. I didn’t want you being accused of something you hadn’t done.
LemonJam - I don’t think anyone else thinks I was being serious either. It’s all a bit surprising isn’t this calling me out for various naughtinesses?

I am sorry, it was blindingly obvious to me that Tulips post was sarcastic.
Not sure about that. Sarcasm and satire are two different things . . . and Tt said it was satire.
I read Tuliptree's post as both sarcasm and satire.
Sarcasm - expressing her contempt for Musk and Grok
Satire- use of irony and humour exposing Musk's corruption and how he nefariously interferes in international affairs.
I didn't for one minute think she was being serious....
I see Starmer is trying to defend the indefensible now😬
