Well exactly. They also allude to the deterrent affect. Which actually matches measures taken in other European countries.
Labour have actually been doing a lot to try and change matter: it frustrates me this isn't recognised, because despite policy claims from the Far right claims "turn the boats back" they know quite well they cant do it.

Well unless you want everyone to be drowned when France refuses to take them back - and why should they? (goes away muttering, reminding GN's that around 94% of incomers come legally and the govt are taking more action on both these matters than previous ones. And actually speeding up the processing.

If not housed in former army barracks as outlined- I wonder where the OP and others would prefer asylum seekers to be housed whilst awaiting their asylum applications to be processed.
